On the evening that Elif Eralp won the Berlin mayoral race with a Mamdani-style campaign, I arrive in NYC for an event hosted by Mayor Mamdani and am welcomed at the hotel by my first review copy of «Anti-fascist Economics». 🌹

Ben Anderson will present recent work with the title "Unfeeling the climate crisis: Disaffection and the politics of intensity" at Human Geography in Lund in a few weeks. Don't miss out if you are in the neighbourhood an interested in affect and politics. Oct 8th, "världen" room 14.15-16.00

After years of bureaucratic manoeuvres, The Lund University Dept of Human Geography Social Theory and Space Network is here www.keg.lu.se/en/social-th... This fall we will read Trevor Paglen's How to see like a Machine and Polanyi's The Great Transformation. Reading groups open to students and staff

As ever I would point out that this is good landscape management and there is nothing 'wild' about it and until we stop calling it 'rewilding' people will continue to operate with the ludicrous romantic assumption that 'nature' is self-healing and that human intervention is bad.

'The area of the National Trust’s Holnicote estate where rivers have been returned to their natural courses and wetlands have been restored have remained green and lush during the five heatwaves across the summer.'

First day back at work, and found this on my desk. Really nice to see the paper on Lund's "brick brutalist" People's park (Bengt Edman, 1976) strange afterlives, which the wonderful Alva Zalar and I wrote, in print... The volume, on TU Wien Academic Press, looks great and has many great chapters!

Swedish interwar Co-operative movement posters, from a time when co-ops were a key pillar of social democracy and the labor movement. Photographs from ongoing auction at "Wickmans". Was going to make a bid for the urban development one, but they are not looking like they will be cheap...

Came across this stunning photograph of Lund's 1938 public baths in goodwill bargain book from 1950. Quite the milestone in the local spatial politics of public luxury that was rolled out as social democratic welfare planing in the postwar era. The architects were Hans Westman with Tor Andersson.

Emergency Podcast: Burnham Begins! Inevitably, yet indispensably, it's me and @profafinlayson.bsky.social discussing Burnham, the cabinet, and what it is they seem to think they're doing. Listen here or search for Culture, Power, Politics in any app: culturepowerpolitics.org/2026/07/24/e...

[The defaced sticker is from the literally Hitlerite and terrorist-listed Nordic Resistance Movement and was one of many, many that this unsung hero with a cute mint-coloured marker pen had taken care of with a charming combo of strangely woke and very un-PC messages.]

Edman brutalism/People's Park/Queer theory cross-over book chapter with incredible smart postdoc Alva Zalar just published and available open access, if that's not too niche... In TU Wien crew book called "Unvoiced Heritage Queerfeminist: Care for Tabooed Spaces" repositum.tuwien.at/bitstream/20...

More Bengt Edman-brutalism/People's Park crossover photographs. Used a flea market event as cover to document some interiors yesterday. Note the recurring rhythms, scales and angels connecting indoor and outdoor space.

Sweden, SCB poll: S-S&D: 34% (-2) SD-ECR: 18% M-EPP: 17% (-1) V-LEFT: 9% (+2) MP-G/EFA: 7% C-RE: 6% KD-EPP: 5% (+2) L-RE: 3% +/- vs. 29 April 2025 - 28 May 2025 Fieldwork: 28 April - 28 May 2026 Sample size: 9,260 ➤ europeelects.eu/sweden

A right-wing slogan in the Swedish election is that the left wants to "force mix" the forms of tenure (=introduce migrant renters to suburbia). This 1976 interview with future conservative housing minister calling for MORE mixing of tenure within housing areas, shows how hard they have moved right.

Slite Cement works and lime quarry, Gotland, Sweden. Sweden's only real remaining cement industry of any scale. Deceptive, in that the real damage is elsewhere. About two thirds of the unknown number of tonnes of mined limestone's mass will circulate as CO2 in the atmosphere for a very long time...

New paper on Swedish housing markets with important implication! Upgrading rental stock is often understood as means to attract high income residents, but create "difficult situation in which low-income households face rising rents, as their ability to move to more affordable areas is constrained."

Used the public holiday to take the kids to say goodbye to the last section of Malmö Stadion. This 1958 masterpiece by local modernist outfit Janaecke & Samuelsson has seen Zlatan Ibrahamovic + Pelé not to mention a World Cup and countless league victories and is being torn down for no good reason.

I am sorry that G.M. Tamás is not here to see the deserved fall of Orbán. I hope the incoming government chokes off the vast funding network propping up various petty Lord Haw-Haws across Europe. Exemplary prosecutions for corruption would be salutary well beyond Hungary's borders.

Mamdani nails it again. As @triofrancos.bsky.social & I argued in NYT, green economic populism means tackling the climate crisis & working people's cost of living at the same time. We need better transit, better EV infrastructure, better rideshare options. Many needs ➡️ many policies.

A greener city has to be a fairer city. We’re bringing fast, affordable EV charging to working drivers and underserved communities—starting with a new hub in Flushing, Queens. Eight chargers. 80% charge in under 15 minutes. The first of 10 sites coming this year.
