important thing to think about re: the police violence against peaceful protesters in france, belgium, spain, italy etc western governments have been supporting, supplying or tolerating a genocide in gaza – part of what they have been doing is seeing what level of violence states can get away with

data centre eejit thinks books are bad, what a surprise haha

The Journal@thejournal.ie

"So Sally Rooney has published six and a half million books - that's quite a lot of books, well done - but that's about 15,000 tonnes of emissions." Ireland's data centre industry boss has lashed out at writer Sally Rooney for her opposition to the sector www.thejournal.ie/sally-rooney...

child going panto this year, and i've had a flashback to a panto of aladdin i went to in the late 90s that was sponsored by dublin bus they did a song halfway through, set to "going to ibiza" but it was "we're going in the bus lane" why didn't they use the vengaboys a song about an actual bus??

so sad! was lucky enough to see him play with andy irvine in dún laoghaire a few years ago great musician, and seemed like a lovely person

recently spoke to our 6-year-old about consent for things like this, as i saw her look a bit uncomfortable with an air-kiss on the cheek from a friend (we're in belgium, 'la bise' is very normal) i told her that she can always say no, even to family – and she said she thought she couldn't!

The Journal@thejournal.ie

Adverts run by the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre looking at consensual hugs between children and their grandparents has been suspended after criticism. Aontú's Peader Tóibín called the ad "bonkers", as he urged a "need to build resilience" among children. www.thejournal.ie/grandparents...

our little girl is extremely well-behaved (we're very lucky!) and always wants to do what's right but this means she doesn't want to upset or disappoint adults – so she's had to learn her consent and comfort is important too! super important for kids to understand this

we had a full conversation about consent, talked about asking etc on first dates and things i told her she can always say to an adult if she doesn't want a hug or a kiss, or would prefer a high-five or something – and stressed that any decent adult won't mind! seems like a very relevant campaign

"Divert, distract, dehumanise and scapegoat are the oldest tricks in wily politicians’ playbook. The well-worn recipe is simple: take a social crisis, remove its economic content, replace it with a face, a religion, a border. Then offer an enemy, not a solution" Expect more when climate chaos bites

euobserver.comEurope’s youth asked for hope – but politicians just offer fear and hateAs Europe pours billions into defence and talks up ‘strategic autonomy’, it is quietly undermining its own power by ignoring the students who say they can’t afford the education, housing or stability ...

absolutely hate framing like this it's not a blow to "climate campaigners" in the way that a loss by a football team is a blow to their fans it's a blow to everyone who relies on a stable climate, breathable air and drinkable water climate chaos is a physical fact, it's not an issue of opinion

part of why i loved my samsung flip (RIP): i actually just wanted to keep it folded and use the tiny screen on it obviously need to combine that with a robustness that the phone didn't have

The central story is not only the scale of destruction It is also the courage of people who have resisted genocide, occupation, colonisation & political indifference Militarism, fossil-fuel power, colonial extraction, corporate impunity & racism are not separate crises – they reinforce one another

greenpeace.orgGaza: voices of resistance against genocide, occupation and colonisation - Greenpeace InternationalPalestinians continue to report, care for their communities, protect their land and demand freedom in the face of genocide, occupation and colonisation. From dockworkers blocking arms shipments to art...

my 6-year-old daughter and 81-year-old dad both got their first whiffs of teargas today, on the fringes of protests in brussels dad was there in '68, barricading the university! still never had teargas it feels like the cops are out of control now, extremely trigger-happy with so many weapons

heatwaves, droughts, floods, storms... and sky-high energy bills gas is only benefiting the fossil fuel companies making obscene profits from people's misery, oh and the authoritarian governments selling it to the EU

extra €50 per month!!

Greenpeace EU@greenpeace.eu

Have your energy bills gone up? New analysis from @greenpeace.be shows that compared to five years ago, fossil fuels cost households in Europe an extra €61.5 BILLION between March and August That's an extra bill of €50 per month per household, on average Gas is ruining Europe!

opened this article expecting a lot of regurgitated corporate PR, basically amounting to free advertising for one of the most despicable companies in the world (which i did find) but wasn't expecting to see mcdonald's absolutely body the taoiseach and tánaiste like that

democracy doesn't begin and end at the ballot box! the right to organise, protest and withdraw your labour is a key part of a healthy democracy too!!! big businesses spend millions lobbying to tip the scales of "democracy" in between elections, protest is ordinary people's way to push back!!!!!

Patrick Bresnihan@pbresnihan.bsky.social

Another example of Martin turning legitimate, public action into a 'threat to democracy'. "There doesn't need to be a picket, and I'm saying to all concerned, parliamentary democracy matters, and we shouldn't be just lightly chipping away at it." www.rte.ie/news/ireland...

let's be honest, we don't restrict ourselves to yanks when it comes to telling fibs (they're just fairly easy marks)

Darach Ó Séaghdha@darach.bsky.social

Lookit. Deep down every Irish person wants to spin some yank a yarn that gets cited as fact in some factual text. We told an Irish American girl that when the Muppets was released in Ireland, Kermit the Frog was called Dermot the Frog because Cromwell’s son was a Kermit.
