One of the best things about being a slow learner is that there are so many opportunities to notice things that you never noticed before. There's a full moon and snow and the night sky is deep blue, not black. Is that widely known?

It seems to me that this "if my grandmother had wheels she'd be a bicycle" argument could just as logically be used to hand the certification to Daniel J Sullivan, no? Why assume that the votes for Dan J were really meant for Dan S? Why not the other way around? I should have been a lawyer.

Kyle Cheney@kyledcheney.bsky.social

JUST IN: Judge Gleason in Alaska sounds deeply skeptical of DOJ's 11th hour lawsuit there to halt certification if Sen. Dan Sullivan loses. She grants Dems' motion for expedited consideration and notes DOJ waited four months to sue over the ballot. s3.documentcloud.org/documents/28...

It's a pretty good ad, at least he's paying attention, but I feel sorry for people who can only find apples at the supermarket and don't have access to an orchard or farmstand where they grow the old-timers.

None of the above. Give me a Westfield-Seek-No-Further. I will also accept: Esopus Spitzenburg, Gravenstein, Ashmead's Kernel, Roxbury Russet, Cornish Gilliflower, Empire....

This is how it's done. Here is the ALT-text: Acyn → @Acyn X.com EL-SAYED: I get that the President takes personal offense to my first name. He doesn't mind as much when it's the Saudis who are funding his son-in-law's private equity. Doesn't seem to mind as much when it's the Qataris

who are giving them a $400 million private jet. He just seems to have trouble pronouncing it when it's my name. I don't care how he pronounces my name. I don't even care that he remembers my whole name. Because he can just go on and call me senator after November. ALT

This sounds right and I haven't seen it said this way before. I was born when Truman was President. my parents loved FDR and I lived through McCarthy and the fall and rise and fall of Nixon and all the afterward and I feel I have a certain ownership of the Democratic Party, and I want it back.

This is a righteous cause, glad that NYC can stick it to Bezos and I would love to see this here in MA, but the guy with the Amazon vest who delivered my package after dark today in what I'm sure was his personal car came from an Amazon depot in NH. This really should be a federal problem.

When a worker wears an Amazon vest, drives an Amazon van and delivers on an Amazon-controlled route, but Amazon denies they work for the company — that's exploitation.

Three years ago, my dad said that all fish are the same shape. Out of spite, I decided to draw all 478 families of bony fish listed in Nelson 2016. There's still some stuff I need to edit and some fish I want to redraw but, after 985 days, I finished my big dumb fish project last night.

OK, here's some more context around that AOC think I just reposted. This was an event she held with Troy Jackson in Portland, Maine. Follow the link to @mpuniversity.bsky.social to see more of her and Troy's long-form answers to other key questions like "What are you going to do first?"

Trans voter to @aoc.bsky.social: Trans people in America feel like they've been abandoned by the Democratic Party, that we are a losing issue, that it's not worth defending us. What do you say to that? AOC:

She is so good at this kind of clear explanation of the real problem. Combination of this is what she really believes and a very smart staff that makes sure she is prepared to say why.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

AOC: "What the Trump administration is doing in targeting trans people is to get everyone on board with supporting defunding their own civil rights ... understand that when they attack trans girls in sports, they're also attacking all women's ability to stand up against their abusers"

Many people are saying this. You don't get what you don't ask for. There are some interesting variations on this idea in the comments.

Expanding the Court is the moderate position

The next Congress is going to have a lot of work to do and I have asked myself where I would start if I were in the House, and I have pretty much settled on impeaching Hegseth after a very visible and thorough investigation. The man's staggering incompetence and recklessness endanger us all. And

MS NOW EXCLUSIVE: Military families abandoned by Pete Hegseth describe the hasty and traumatic evacuation from Naval Support Activity Bahrain in March. @nicollewallace.bsky.social is joined by Priya Sridhar, bylined on this story, for the latest.

it shouldn't be just for appearance, it should be a genuine effort to make a strong enough case that the Senate will convict and remove him. While that's under way we can also begin to look at ICE, CBP, and DHS, and then Musk and all the rot at the heart of the administration. But Hegseth first.

I've said this before: We aren't rioting in the streets like the French because we can't afford to go to the hospital and our cops shoot real bullets.

I'm not going to make any predictions, particularly about the future, but there is stuff to think about here.

Micah@rincewind.run

he’s going to be in the neat position to block anyone he hates from the nomination because of his dead-end base while acting as a massive anchor around the neck of whoever wins I love this for them

Carville should be ashamed of himself. This is an admission that he doesn't care about people getting hurt. "Admission" hell, it's a brag.

You know those feel-good stories about the high-school shop class that builds a motorized wheelchair for someone in town who needs one because their insurance refuses to pay for one? This is that kind of feel-good story. Good for them, something to celebrate, but they should never have had to do it.

The Tennessee Holler @thetnholler.bsky.social

This is awesome. If your vote didn’t matter Republicans wouldn’t be trying so hard to stop you.

I hope this guy goes to the Senate because I want people in the Senate who will talk up this issue. Lots of things about this country need to be fixed, but this is a big one that people can agree on.

I know it's a silly jokey joke, but people REALLY need to stop anthropomorphizing their boyfriends. "My boyfriend told me" your boyfriend didn't "tell" you anything. "My boyfriend thinks..." your boyfriend can't actually think or feel; just output a convincing simulation of it based on probability 🙄

Oh, now here we go. Somebody has an actual plan for that.

Paul-tergeist Crider@paulcrider.liberalcurrents.com

This bill would abolish ICE, DHS, and CBP, transferring legitimate customs duties to other departments. It would sunset Section 219 of the INA close the Guantánamo Bay detention facility and shutter all immigration detention centers. You have my sword, milady.

combines a number of different factors, based on a survey of informants in 85 different countries, you will have to read the report for details of how they did it. Top 5, highest first: Switzerland, Canada, Japan, Sweden, Italy. Bottom 5, lowest first: Israel, North Korea, Afghanistan, Iran, USA.

The post that this is replying to is blocked for me so I don't have context to tell me whether this is a good-faith question, but there is a long thread of mostly very good answers to the question if someone you know is not sure how important alt-text is.

noisome bug. They are, in the words of one post I saw here, going for the kill shot. I am no fan of the DCCC, they tend to support incumbents and corporatists, but they are looking to put Ds in districts that have been solid R for generations and I am going to help them do that. Link next page:

Really disappointed to see how many people think this is an opportunity to make a joke about Darwin Awards.

James@blueskyjames.bsky.social

Sadly, even people of BlueSky consider a brutal death of a mentally ill man to be something of a laughing matter

I keep trying to tell people they should read Darwin. He is endlessly curious and it comes through clearly in his writing.

Greg Priest@gregpriest.bsky.social

OTD in 1881, Charles Darwin published his last book, on earthworms. It reflected a long interest in animal minds: “One alternative alone is left, namely, that worms, although standing low in the scale of organization, possess some degree of intelligence.” 🧪 🌱🐋🦋🦫 #HistSTM #philsci #pschsky #cogsci

I know I post a lot of these, I don't expect anyone to give money to every good cause that comes along, the idea is to spread the word so lots of people see it and some fraction of those people chip in each time, it's a team effort.
