In Jewish tradition, chesed is the abundant grace that we received at the time of the creation of the world, and that we can choose to give to each other and to all life. It is the kindness we show ourselves (hopefully) when we mess up, and need to make things right.

Chesed is the gifts of time and service that we give to ensure our country’s democracy stays strong for generations to come. The world is built up by this loving kindness. Where is chesed showing up in your life now and where do you want to bring more chesed?

We are about two weeks out from election day. What better time for an extra dose of chesed? The concept of chesed — steadfast love, kindness, generosity and abundance — dates back to some of our earliest Torah narratives; according to some sources, God’s chesed is the very reason the world exists.

This week or Shabbat, increase chesed in your life! VISUAL: Using an index card or sturdy paper as your canvas, create a collage or image that represents chesed to you. WRITING: Describe an encounter with chesed. Where is chesed showing up in your life, and where do you want to bring more chesed?

"My heart is with the lost and left behind. With the ones who drowned.” As we return to the story of Noah’s Ark this week, these words from disability scholar and theologian Rabbi Dr. Julia Watts Belser remind us of what’s at stake in our fight for a just, livable future.

"When modern Jewish communities read Noah’s story today, our eye is often trained toward the rainbow, toward the promise that comes after the flood. But I am distrustful of that impulse, the way we all too easily efface the casualties, and the memory of those who do not survive..."

"There was a time when we could have been forgiven for not being sure how to respond to the future disruptions of climate breakdown. But now we know. In our hearts and minds, there may be room for compassion and forgiveness, but nature will show us no such sympathy." www.nytimes.com/2026/10/12/o...

This week, Jewish communities around the world are rolling back to chapter 1 of Breishit (Genesis) and recounting the mythic story of creation. The narrative remains the same, but each year, we read it differently — faced with new challenges, opportunities, and possibilities...

Shabbat Shalom! This week we restart the Torah cycle anew with Parshat Bereshit, which tells the story of creation Bereshit Rabba, a Talmudic-era rabbinic commentary on the Book of Genesis, teaches that "Bereishit" — the story of the world’s creation — begins with the letter Bet (ב) because...

Just like the Bet is closed on three sides and open on its front, we too should not ask what came before this moment, but focus instead on this moment forward and what is yet possible. We cannot change the climate realities and organizing conditions already around us, but we can turn forward.
