Good news is that the coffee pot seems to be working correctly again, so God willing I can wait until Black Friday to buy a new one

Jonathan Heaps@jonathanrheaps.bsky.social

Welp, the coffee pot I bought right before Oskar (11) was born seems to be finally biting the dust. Keeps turning off halfway thru brews. Very annoying.

lol this tattoo healed *so* badly. Easily my worst ever. Partly on me for getting it halfway thru a trip to Rome in June, but also sunglasses guy there had a heavy-ass hand and turned me to burger w/ the red.

If it makes you feel any better, we’re eternally united to them in God

Bums me out sometimes that it’s a near certainty that somewhere out there is intelligent life, and it’s also a near certainty that it’s way to far away for us to ever interact with at all.

One squirrel just chased another down a tree trunk and onto the sidewalk directly in front of my dog, who they both noticed at the same time and then ran from in opposite directions. Feels like a metaphor for something

I admit this is aphoristic and I haven’t totally unpacked its significance even for myself, but I keep coming back to “the insufficiency of liberalism is actually what indicates its necessity”

Wisdom is realizing that everyone who has a firm commitment to democracy agrees with each other on enough that we can find ways to work together against violent anti-democratic jackasses.

Relatedly, when I lived in Milwaukee, neighborhoods had FB groups where they planned Trick or Treating on non-Halloween days to make it harder for kids from other (predominantly Black and brown) neighborhoods to come & participate. Some deeply fucked up racist shit.

KidzBoptotenlieder@theodramatist.com

Basically, I think Trunk or Treat teaches people, or encourages them to lean into, in most contexts the worst kind of "stranger danger" fear of neighbors that is corrosive of community and often grounded in entirely Urban Legend level dangers associated with Halloween.

I have myriad justified gripes about higher education as a profession, but at this very moment, I am reading Plato’s Euthyphro outside on a temperate Fall day with a cigar and a cup of coffee and it’s literally my job

Another practical pay off of those college theater classes I’m always touting: I can yell *really* loud

I was reminded this morning of a not-insignificant challenge to riding a bike on city streets as the weather starts to get colder: it’s nearly impossible to effectively flip someone the bird while wearing mittens.

Thinking about this Roman barista

Jonathan Heaps@jonathanrheaps.bsky.social

Roman Barista: *something about texas* Me: I used to live in Texas. I’m glad I don’t anymore. Barista: Fascists here, now fascists there. But the night will end.

Normally, TROs aren't appealable--let alone "constructive" denials of them. Mark J. BENNETT (Trump), Patrick J. BUMATAY (Trump), Gabriel P. SANCHEZ (Biden). Live stream should be here: www.ca9.uscourts.gov/cases/stream...

This fits nicely with my take that Star Wars is above all an aesthetic

Tim Carmody@tcarmody.bsky.social

Magic and futuristic technology can exist side by side like in Star Wars, and social structures can be radically egalitarian or anti-egalitarian in the future or the past. What truly matters are the outfits the characters are wearing

Got my Covid/Flu shots yesterday and usually, besides a little soreness at the injection site, I’m totally fine. But this go around, for what I *think* is the first time, I have been fully wiped out by one or both of them. I have been LAID LOW.

If the Dallas fucking Cowboys can recognize an overdue union, I don’t want to hear any more foot dragging from Catholic Universities

NEWS: the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders have unionized and the Cowboys have agreed to recognize the union

Oskar (11): “what’s with ‘Luke Warm.’ Who is this tepid Luke?” Me: “maybe he knows that ‘Noah Vale’ guy they always talk about on the news.” Oskar: “from their correspondence: a letter to Noah Vale”

This is even more inside Lonergan baseball than usual from me, but MattY’s position seems to express the tacit view that there’s only (in Lonergan’s technical sense) progress & decline, so if things are bad, the only way out is along the incremental pathways of progress. Redemption never irrupts.

Yglesias says re: Minneapolis, as a defense against the idea that oppostion was wrong, that "I mean, what it took in Minnesota to turn that around, they killed multiple U.S. citizens." That's true! But it also took Bloody Sunday and similar incidents to galvanize national support for civil rights.

I’ve said it before, but I feel guilty in retrospect how dismissive I was of Anne Lamott’s efforts to not hate Dick Cheney so much

I stress the historical angle - that this is a reduction on a per capita basis even compared to the mid-1900s - because I want to be clear this isn't a 'bubble' popping, but a decision to have *fewer* historians in the future than any time in living memory. I think that is an unwise decision.
