Hey so if anyone makes a starter pack called like People Who Used to Be Active Online But Got Burned Out and They’re Still Here But Just In a Different, Less Clout-Chasing Phase But You Should Still Follow Them Because When They Post Projects They’re Still Worth Seeing please add me to it

Amazing thread

Every public action on Bluesky is available via a stream of events known as the firehose. By monitoring the firehose for repeated text, it is sometimes possible to quickly detect groups of spam accounts as they spawn.

Last week I gave a talk in Sydney. Someone invited me to a party happening one week later. I laughed, because I live in another country. I returned home to Wellington and joked to my wife that we can’t go, of course. She said “why not?” So yeah, we flew back to Sydney just to attend a party.

The key detail is how unlike us this is. We don’t have date nights. We are homebodies. We’re frugal and not spontaneous. We haven’t been on a trip by ourselves in 17 years, since having kids. It was our favourite trip and party of all time. The perfect (insane) yolo day trip. So glad we did it.

And it's not public yet, but I have this working for myself! Every time I post on a service, my script slurps it down, saves it to my own DB, and I get a copy of it forever. Super helpful for a) making a search for all your creations across the net b) dealing with sites disappearing

there are also more gardens than I've ever seen before. Even if the internet is 99% corporate and 1% weird, 2024's internet is bigger so the 1% is bigger. Now is way more creator-friendly, way more networked, way easier to accept payment or find your tribe than ever. (cont)

If you agree with @mariafarrell.bsky.social when she says we need to Rewild the Internet, as I do, these are some of the "gardens" that are growing in the shadows of the big corporate skyscrapers. Maria and I chatted a bit about this. The skyscrapers are bigger than ever ... but (cont)

A story about joining Microsoft 10-15 years ago and why people thought my name was Joe. I joined the Windows Phone design team, and I was used to working in big business. I know things are slow. I know it can be frustrating. Heck, I grew up in DC, with my friends' parents working in the government.

Did I want my very first order of business to fight for a new email address? Putting me out of commission for five days? Should I go for quality and long term thinking if it meant a short term loss to my team? And that's why I stuck with jobell@microsoft.com.

It's not that I'm against doing it right. I'm just against fighting every single little battle. I believe in perspective. So that's why people thought my name was Jo. But it's fine. "Everything is copy," as Nora Ephron always said. In the end it all worked out, and I got this story out of it! <3

So I understand slow. I went in reminding myself "don't make waves, don't think you're in a nimble design agency." So I was in my first meeting with leadership on my first day and my manager told me my email address: jobell@microsoft.com. Logically, it makes sense. First two chars, last name.

But, like, my name is jonbell. I said "Ohh... hey, any way I can get jonbell instead of jobell?" "Oh... yeah. We can... it's just that a name change usually takes like 5 business days..." they looked at me expectantly. There wasn't a right or wrong answer, per se. They got it. I got it. Hm.

Exciting news from my Vessel Spotting project, where I draw little pixel art of ships I spot in Wellington and track where they go in the world. See the ship at the top? That's a car carrier with a really unique look, returning home to Japan, the furthest I've seen a ship go.

I say this with love and bemusement, not shade, but wow Sydney residents are extremely proud of their awesome home. Like, as proud as Texans. It’s notable.

I’ve been preparing for this talk for a long time. Now that it’s done, two songs keep running through my head: Kendrick: “sometimes you gotta pop out and show [people]” — I love the stage, and it’s been five years since my last new material. Pleased it went well.

Ani DiFranco: “And you’ll say ‘Did they love you or what’ and I’ll say ‘They love what I do. The only one who loves me is you.’ And you’ll say ‘girl did you kick some butt’ and I’ll say ‘I don’t really remember, but my fingers are sore and my voice is too.”

@bwood.me I just woke up in Sydney and I’m procrastinating so I’ll add a low-hanging design crit notes: A) Logo cropping on the top on my standard latest iPhone B) P in app password form could be lowercase to match cases C) Add the same spacing between the note and the button that use use between

your textfields D) Just a matter of taste/preference but on mobile I’d centre the call to action and add some x padding E) Everyone’s buttons are flat. Give it a little aurora, texture, roundness or nice hover effect and immediately people trust the quality of the app more #AestheticsEffect

Working with @acemarke.dev was a highlight of my career and becoming his friend was a highlight of my life ❤️

Mark Erikson@acemarke.dev

My former teammate @jonbell.bsky.social is incredibly thoughtful about how people interact with technology. He just did a talk about how features like filtering and labeling can lead to a much better social media experience for everyone. Very worth reading! www.arbiter.space/futureofsoci...

Really excited about this. Scooping up links is one of my main use cases for social media

Brandon Wood@bwood.me

Excited to release this to the world - @skydigest.app helps you keep up with trending news in your Bluesky network. Remember Nuzzel for Twitter? The aim is to do the same thing here. I've got a giant backlog of ideas and performance improvements planned, and would love feedback! skydigest.app

Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Fabulous optimistic take on the future of social networks from @jonbell.bsky.social at #webdirections24. A few gems: We should never have to go into settings, just say what we want Filtering can be enhanced with tools like phrase blocking Tagging can add greater value to the network than posting

blueskywordcloud.com is here! Took me about 5 hours (with some distractions) and it was mainly just a fun little app to build. I outlined pretty much every step of how I made it no code👇 Thanks to those of you who followed along!

Harrison 💥@riehle.co

Just for fun, I am going to #buildinpublic a silly Bluesky app tonight and post my thought process from beginning to end. Probably will do no-code so I can ship it asap. Its fun to see people posting results but it is super interesting to see the process of how they got there. Follow along! 🧵

Hello from my first time in Sydney! I’m attending @webdirections.bsky.social and will soon be in a workshop with long time internet hero Josh Clark. Then tomorrow I do my talk in this unique looking Gehry building: Also this açai place is playing How Soon Is Now which I find fitting.

Update! The young lady got tired of The Smiths and stopped the song in the middle to pick Riptide by Vance Joy. One of my daughter’s favorite songs. Reminds me of us fighting over the aux when we’re driving.

I find it disappointing but entirely expected that on Mastodon everyone is cheerleading their thing, on Threads, they’re cheerleading their thing, and Threads is cheerleading their thing. Fediverse or Atproto, I’m just excited that decentralised is exploding in popularity.

Bluesky’s enemy isn’t Mastodon or Threads (both on the decentralized fediverse). The enemy are the closed systems like X. It’s a great time to fight closed systems. Don’t squabble over the user count stats between different alternatives.

Give been thinking about social media a lot, again. When I worked at Twitter, our data showed it took years for someone to become a consistent user. It was too hard to find people to follow, some people post too much, others post too little, it was hard to keep up. And posting is scary and lonely.

But I still wonder about the scary/lonely angle. The vast majority of people aren’t looking to post things publicly. And people who do are easily frustrated when they get no engagement.

It’s exciting seeing atproto get more attention. I love seeing the developer community get inspired and make awesome stuff. But I’m also wondering if/when this stuff will become truly mainstream. Not nerd mainstream but mainstream mainstream.

I just discovered Starter Packs on here. A really great idea I don’t recall us working on. (That’s saying a lot because we had lots of ideas that didn’t ship.)

I am rooting for decentralized, I am rooting against X, and I love Bluesky. I put together some stats to compare how things are going across apps, protocols, and centralized vs decentralized. Some disclaimers: * Solid numbers are hard to come by * It's likely I messed up some numbers * I love bsky

Pro-Threads content does great on Threads, pro-Mastodon content does great on Mastodon, and pro-Bluesky content does great here. Please don't read these graphs as being against Bluesky. I just wanted to see what we're up against. It's exciting seeing decentralized about to surpass Twitter!

@jedmund.com I just remembered reaching out to you about making loading states on Twitter use the dominant color when an image is loading, instead of full gray. We ended up shipping that! Took like a year. Thanks for the quick email response about it, I think I asked because Pinterest did it.

I recently started collecting ships that come into Wellington like they’re Pokémon + messages in a bottle. I even draw little pixel art versions of each one so I can see them go all over the world on a map. My wife says she’s going to buy me a T-shirt that says OLD MAN HOBBIES

Mere hours after Christine’s epic deep dive.. bsky.app/profile/dust... ..my Weird project partner @zicklag.katharos.group put out the first post in an ongoing series about #leafprotocol 🍂 blog.muni.town/leaf-atproto... Think of it like a Small World companion layer to the Big World #atproto.

blog.muni.townLeaf, ATProto and ActivityPubHow does Leaf compare to AtProto and ActivityPub?
Christine Lemmer-Webber@dustyweb.bsky.social

How Decentralized Is Bluesky Really? dustycloud.org/blog/how-dec... A technical deep-dive, since people have been asking me for my thoughts. I'll expand a bit on some of the key points here in a thread. 🧵

In a few days, I’ll be speaking at @webdirections.bsky.social in Sydney about a topic near and dear to my heart. I don’t believe in blind optimism. I’m too pragmatic and realistic for that. So this talk is jam-packed with tangible examples of things (some already shipping) that will be a big deal.
