Remember these guys? I tested one bottle two months ago and it was ~49% "pure". I thought that it was one-batch failure, but I was wrong. I bought second bottle myself in Calgary and tested by PXRD + TGA. Nope, apparently they have a systematic problem with quality. 1/x #chemsky #chemchat

Second part of Canadian adventures (and last). Thanks (or "thanks") to @nmr900.bsky.social I am now familiar with this cringe advertisement from Canadian TV www.youtube.com/watch?v=EyTZ... . Obviously, a phrase "100% Pure" would trigger any scientist and I was not exception. 🧵 1/x #chemsky

📢 Hiring a postdoc! Join my group on an NIH-funded project developing hydrazone-based photoswitchable fluorophores for super-resolution microscopy. Looking for expertise in organic synthesis, photochemistry, spectroscopy, systems/supramolecular chemistry, and/or chemical biology. #chemjobs #chemsky

So excited to be the ISOP conference in Groningen for all things #photoswitches! My favourite meeting so I’m honoured to also be the only person from Australia (again?) #ozchem

Devastating news for so many people who applied. Imagine running a scheme and then once all the applications are submitted, cancelling it. What a waste of so many people’s time. #ozchem

ARC Tracker@arc-tracker.bsky.social

This isn’t the ARC, but I can easily imagine it happening to an ARC scheme: The Government cancelled the Australia’s Economic Accelerator scheme, **including the round of submitted proposals currently under review**. Absolutely gutting for researchers involved. Enraging, and outrageous!

#photoswitches: How should we determine errors on PSS distributions, and the absorption spectrum of the metastable isomer? We have been discussing this for years and have finally written a manuscript, including a python code to fit your data without human bias. chemrxiv.org/doi/full/10....

Crazy

ARC Tracker@arc-tracker.bsky.social

⁉️The ARC has delayed outcomes of ALL grants 1–4 months & increased scheduled outcome windows from 2 weeks to 3 months! This reverses 4 years of progress in providing greater certainty & ability to plan for researchers, their families & unis. Their excuse? Security checks under new ARC legislation👇

Truly sad news today. Emma was an inspiring Dean of Science at UNSW and always dedicated to making a real difference in the world, as well as beaming with energy and positive vibes. A pleasure to work with and an inspiring leader in times when they seem so hard to find. She’ll be sadly missed.

Vale Prof Emma Johnston AO FAA FTSE The Academy is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of one of our Fellows, Prof Emma Johnston AO FAA FTSE. She was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science in 2022 recognising her leadership in the field of marine ecology, 🧵 vimeo.com/762105195

If you believe either that Franklin discovered the double helix, and / or Watson and Crick stole her data, ask yourself how you know this. Then take a read of this article.

If I see one more stupid Rosalind Franklin take I'm going to lose my mind. Thank god for @matthewcobb.bsky.social and @nccomfort.bsky.social. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

ARC says Discovery Projects outcomes will be tomorrow (Tuesday). Linkage Projects (2025, round 1) on Wed. Over past ~year, it's often been at about 11am (Canberra). My bot will pick up the change to RMS & post immediately. ARC should email outcomes to lead CIs, but might take an 1hr or so for DPs

Fantastic to see one of my chemical heroes, Richard Robson, winning the Nobel Prize for coordination frameworks (MOFs), together with Kitagawa and Yaghi. #ozchem

We’ve also been thinking about this a lot in recent years. Even “well mixed” solutions are really very heterogeneous, even though we synthetic chemists don’t like to admit it, and it can change reaction outcomes…. #ChemSky

Stirring: friend or foe? Huang et al.: 329 reactions → stirring made little difference. Cherepanova et al.: stirrers can cause irreproducibility by vial position. Time to rethink the humble stir bar. doi.org/10.1021/jacs... #ChemSky

Above a threshold concentration, the assembly time seems independent of concentration, with the ratio of isomers being key, and adding co-surfactants can tune this assembly time. This was a fun but often confusing system to work with!

Everybody knows that LLMs suck in most science-related stuff. But maybe the are good in something that is Large (6000 entries) and Language (mostly)? Because they are Large Language Models. Let's try few of them on mineral names, with great detailed databases (created by humans). #minerals 🧵1/n

This is an excellent illustration of how useless the "Impact Factor" metric is. The most influential multidisciplinary chem journals are JACS and Angewandte. They did not make the list. In this short ad hoc 🧵 I will analyze in real time what made the list and why. I have a bad feeling about this.

Today was Dr Isis Middleton's last day with us! It's been a lot of fun working with Isis for the past 2 years and she's done a fantastic job on a wide range of crazy projects. Wishing her all the best for her next adventures! #ozchem
