Good news everybody - rather than being chased-down by skeletal human-shaped robots, cf. #Terminator2, we will actually be chased-down by adorable dog-shaped robots ... 🤖 (Thanks to @jeremyhsu.bsky.social for the heads-up)

There are sometimes a lot of grumbling about bike lanes in Somerville, but this photo shows why we can't ignore the reality of our streets. Of course, we must consider parking & accessibility, but safe travel for our families and neighbors is a requirement for a livable city.

Jaju Pierogi is coming to Gracie’s in Union Square, Somerville on Tues 10/27 from 5-7pm for a pierogi pop up. And the best part? We made a sour cream and chive ice cream to put on top. (Or on the side). $15 for 4 pierogi and a scoop of the tangiest sour cream and chives ice cream you ever had.

The third item is an AI ordinance. Even though I've been working on this for many months, I recognize it isn't perfect. I don't believe there's agreement on what constitutes perfect, so I'm hoping we can find "good enough." It's a far as it can get in private, now we need to discuss it in the open.

I'm glad that there's a prison sentence, even if it's a short one. Street safety is largely an after thought for far too many people. People driving need to understand that they cannot cause irreparable harm to families and friends without consequence.

Weeks later, on the same stretch of road I was nearly hit on my bike when I stopped for a pedestrian with a stroller heading into the crosswalk. The car sped past me within inches. The *pedestrian* apologized to me for what happened.

If kids can't use crosswalks to get home from school safely, if people can't yield to pedestrians without risking injury or death, and if people are killed on the sidewalk, we have a seriously big problem. Road designs need to improve. Enforcement needs to improve. Consequences need to be real.

In the last two months I've nearly been hit a few times. Once while crossing the street in the crosswalk with my two small kids coming home from school. The first driver stopped, but the person behind in the other lane didn't even slow down. The driver and I had words. She insisted I was to blame.

The Roads Have Eyes! 👁️ Turn on the Surveillance Layer in Map Options to see known license plate readers from Flock Safety, Motorola Solutions (Vigilant), Genetec, Axis Communications, Axon, Leonardo (ELSAG), Neology, Rekor, PlateSmart, Ubicquia, Verkada, and other outdoor surveillance cameras.

When we talk about who has access to supposedly secure police records and surveillance databases, this is why I am so skeptical. There are so many versions of this happening. 99% of police could be doing the right thing and it’s effectively the same as if none of them are.

Iit’s becoming clear to more and more people that we can’t depend on Eversource and other monopolies like it to solve the affordability crisis they’ve manufactured.

I dug into EIA data and found a growing divide between electricity prices at investor-owned utilities and public power providers. Then @michellema.bsky.social and I visited two towns that show what that divide means for customers on the ground. Read our story here! www.bloomberg.com/graphics/202...

New traffic pattern alert - Starting on Thursday, October 15, Mossland Street will be closed to motor vehicles at its intersection with Elm Street. Mossland Street will become a two-way dead-end street with access for residents and visitors via Somerville Avenue.

I should note that the SFD did an amazing job. Two fire fighters were briefly hospitalized due what I understand was an electric shock. Looking at footage of the fire, it'd hard to feel anything but deep appreciation for the work these people do and the risks they take.

I was lucky to be at this event. Amy gave a great talk. I don't quite know what it should look like, but I'm convinced we need state-wide reform to remove historic harms that are still being perpepuated today.

I'm really proud of Somerville for doing this years ago and proving to the rest of Massachusetts that the sky doesn't fall without parking minimums.

This is obviously bad for the environment, public health, and is plain old gross. It's easy to agree on the problem. The question is whose? Decades ago the EPA decided that outflow pipes in Cambridge and Somerville belong to those cities *but also* that outflow pipes in Boston belong to the MWRA.

The result is that Somerville and Cambridge are being asked to foot most of the bill to solve the CSO problem because they are the end of the line for the region and Boston dodged a bullet. Even if Somerville spent a billion dollars to separate every sewer today, we'd still have a problem. Why?...

Why do we need the plan? Many MA cities and towns have combined sewers: stormwater and sewage go into the same pipe. In normal conditions that's okay, but when there's a lot of rain (like we just had for multiple days) it means that the system gets overwhelmed and sewage ends up in our waterways.
