Hi fine folks! Iโ€™m excited to see what kind of connections can be made here :) Iโ€™m building wildfire risk modelling software and I tinker about with web stuff. I identify as a triathlete, stellar parent, and curious geek.

@ballxpit.com itโ€™s a bit too hard for my 6yo but he really likes watching me and deciding my upgrades. Heโ€™s also been building and playing in his imagination. Also the other kids in his class have no idea what heโ€™s talking about. Anyways, hereโ€™s his builds

#Kamloops had a little #wildfire this weekend that was quickly brought under control ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ 1st image is what LensVx shows for the potential growth of that fire (assuming no action taken and burning for 8h) 2nd image is if it starts on June 29, 2021 (peak heat dome).

We use a white base for better data viz in LensVx, but it makes placing ignition points a little tricky. So we've added two extra layers: Canada wide fuel, and a satellite layer. The fuel layer let's you see the underlying fuel types while the satellite layer gives some context. #wildfire

Welp, we started adding some legends to our fire growth outputs and realized that we were only using half of the colour palette. We should have mapped fire intensity to a scale of -1 to 1 instead we only mapped from 0 to 1 and missed the entire yellow portion of the palette. #wildfire

Itโ€™s a fully baked in validity mechanism. Avoid impersonation and confusion. And yes, cool ๐Ÿ˜Ž. Itโ€™s REALLY easy to do, but does need the IT folks. I know we can be a bit resistant to editing DNS records. Tell them some random guy on the internet said to do it. That might help.

@ubcm.bsky.social - spread the word. Local governments can be super cool ๐Ÿ˜Ž on Bluesky ๐Ÿ˜Š

@schickling.dev loving the podcast! Super curious about livestore. Sounds like exactly what Iโ€™m looking for. Does it sync with cloudflare (d1 and/or durable obj)? Iโ€™ve been having a lot of success with TinyBase, but I find the API cumbersome. Livestore looks way more my style.

Today I got to help an older woman cross two streets! She didnโ€™t trust her walking stick and so was waiting for a โ€œstrapping young manโ€. Iโ€™ll gladly take the compliment maโ€™am! #kamloops

Wholly crap this is soo good. Still some rough edges, but I think I've already figured out a small use case that is going to save 10-15min a day. I've imagined a day where I can coordinate outputs from extensions as inputs into others and this delivers on that desire 10 fold.

My ai #weather data dashboard now has a map and can do some cool stuff. Here I've provided an english query for a rolling average temp on the 2 months on either side of the highest temp day.

I spent a good chunk of time the last few weeks writing a 500+ line duckdb sql query to calculate 12 nearest station distance interpolated weather values AND hourly fire weather indices. What a beast! Now to rip it all apart and maybe do less in the query. #duckdb #weather #wx #wildfire

Ever wonder what snow in the swamp would look like? This is 5 miles into the Louisiana swamps in the Atchafalaya basin... it's unreal... having lived down there for the first 28 years of my life, we never saw anything like this. Smashed records. Curtesy of Garrett Roberts.

The @duckdb.org spatial extension is cool... but using it in duckdb-wasm feels like black magic! I'm making some good progress in my little experimental weather app doing spatial queries against parquet files... ZERO moving parts, basically free. bsky.app/profile/jono... #wx

I've been tinkering on a side project. Mainly learning about data engineering but also exploring ideas about #weather #dataviz. What I have so far: a serverless (static in fact) interactive web app showing hourly temperature graph for every station in Canada for all recorded history. #wx

Iโ€™ve gone nearly full circle in the public education system (student, employee, and now parent in PAC). One thing that becomes clearer the further along I go: Parents, teachers, supportโ€ฆ everyone is basically just trying to make up for the complete lack of funding and investment into education.

1) I probably shouldnโ€™t have tried to sell a used mattress on marketplace 2) one probably shouldnโ€™t buy a used mattress from marketplace 3) definitely donโ€™t expect to fold a used queen mattress you bought off marketplace into the trunk of a compact sedan

It works! My silly simple kids savings/finance tracking app. Teach kids about compounding interest by logging deposits to the Bank of [Caring Adult]. No styling and no way for another user to use it yet, but I'm pleased with the results so far. Calcs interest earned to date, today (or any day).

The majority of women over 65yrs in Canada donโ€™t rely on their own driving for transportation. Having other options, whether walking, cycling, or transit gives senior women freedom to get around independently in their own municipalities. #munipoli #SeniorServices Source tests.ca/driving-stat...

The โ€œE-Bike Effect:โ€ Those who bought e-bikes increased their average daily bicycle use from 2.1km (1.3 miles) to 9.2km (5.7 miles), a 340% increase. The e-bike share of all their transportation increased dramatically too; from 17% to 49%. E-bikes support fewer car trips. V/@lloydalter.bsky.social
