This is a positive outcome from our strike action and we want to thank all members, students and other supporters for their unwavering support over the past five weeks. However, we acknowledge the unfairness in the redundancy process that will see many colleagues forced out of the University. 2/2

We welcome Angela Scott’s announcement to pause the compulsory redundancy process. We have always been willing to return to the negotiations in good faith and the two week pause allows us to do this with the aim of reaching a position that reduces the number of compulsory redundancies. 1/2

When the University Executive Group have reached their own staff reduction targets, why are they cutting further? They want rid of the critical voices, trade unionists and the whistleblowers who have been shining a light on their failings. No surrender.

Day 1 of 25 - Massive turnout today on our picket line. Thanks to Heather Anderson MSP and @maggiechapman.bsky.social for your support on the picket line this morning. And for all our amazing students from Students Against Cuts. No compulsory redundancies. #SaveDundeeUni

We are taking 25 days of strike action starting on Monday. We want the University of Executive Group rule out compulsory redundancies. To our students - this is a last resort to retain jobs that are essential for your education during your degree at the University of Dundee. Support the strike!

We have 5 days to save 154 jobs at the University of Dundee. This follows 850+ job losses since August 2024. Everyone who supports the university and higher education needs to be at this event. 12:30pm, Bonar Hall. Next Tuesday 8th September.

Asking the important questions!

What will the Scottish Ministers and Scottish Parliament do about the failures Dundee UCU have identified of the SFC in its role to ensure HE funds are appropriately administered by the University of Dundee? The SFC is legally accountable to the Ministers and Parliament for its actions.

Some colleagues received 5 minutes notice for their online at risk meeting and had not yet received their letter informing them they were at risk. Executive staff did not bother to turn up to the meeting. This is the true face of executive leadership at the University of Dundee.

There are just 21 working days until Dundee UCU members begin 25 days of strike action. We are striking because after 820 job losses, the UEG has proposed making 200 people redundant. We are asking the University to rule our redundancies and return to the negotiating table as soon as possible.

I am not celebrating Rod Liddle’s death. But why is everyone who is eulogising him not mentioning one of his most famous pieces of writing?

With colleagues leaving the University of Dundee since May, the staffing level is just 43FTE above the target level set by the executive. Other cost savings mean another 10FTE can be removed from the target. So with 10 people leaving every month, the staffing savings will be met by end of October.

Dundee UCU@ducuuo.bsky.social

In 50 days time our members will be taking 5 weeks of strike action. We call for the redundancy process to be stopped! Executives want 200 jobs to go (187FTE). Due to resignations and retirements, and non-staff savings, they are 35FTE from their staffing target. Stop this cruel, flawed process.

Stopping the redundancy process would SAVE THE UNIVERSITY MONEY, because it would require no redundancy payouts. These are estimated to total millions of pounds. These cuts are ideological. If the University wants to save money it would stop now and stop the heartache it is causing its own staff.

If you can spare the time please come to this tomorrow, even if it’s just for 20 minutes.

Dundee UCU@ducuuo.bsky.social

Join us tomorrow at this event organised by Dundee Trades Union Council. It is for everyone who supports staff and students at the University of Dundee and wants to see the cuts stopped. Please come along and show your support. Thursday 16th July - 12:30pm Outside Bonar Hall, Nethergate, Dundee

Will the Scottish Government take decisive action or let the SFC continue to endorse redundancies when it admits the conditions of funding have not been met? @johnswinney.bsky.social @mairimcallan.bsky.social @jennygilruth.bsky.social @scottishgov.bsky.social

Dundee UCU@ducuuo.bsky.social

The Scottish Funding Council waved through the University of Dundee's Strategy to Recovery, even though it broke their funding conditions. The Scottish Gov need to ACT NOW and ask the SFC to reverse their decision, and stop the redundancy process TODAY. www.thecourier.co.uk/fp/politics/...

There comes to a point in any struggle where words, lobbying and removal of labour cease to be as effective. With universities threatening non-striking staff if they do not fill in for striking colleagues we have reached this point. Our unions need to be more radical in actions, as we are losing.

Serious Governance issues are not confined to the University of Dundee.

With a senior member of Exec leaving last month, 2 senior HR announcing departures this month, and now this from the CEO of The National Robotarium based at HWU today... Did some send them some Dundee Cake? @ducuuo.bsky.social

Next week’s strikes will be critical for the University of Dundee. Do we accept the upcoming compulsory redundancies that UEG are forecasting or do we ask them to rule them out? Join the picket lines next week to make your voice heard. You are the difference. #SaveDundeeUni #SaveHE

Members of our branch voted to take strike action on 17th-18th March. We are asking the University to rule out compulsory redundancies. We also passed a unanimous Vote of No Confidence in the University Executive Group. Join us on the picket lines! #SaveHE www.thecourier.co.uk/fp/politics/...

In August, in a meeting with the Scottish Gov, Nigel Seaton stated that it was “necessary to be clear with staff what redundancies would likely be needed now.” The University Recovery Plan he drafted stated there would need to be 340 redundancies. Yesterday he told staff there are no plans.

Moving people around for different posts does not save money. Nor does creating 4 new highly-paid posts, where some people will be recruited from lower grades. It’s just moving the cost around on the internal balance sheets. And without growth the University will be forced into a cycle of cuts.

Dundee UCU@ducuuo.bsky.social

A great point made at the Scottish Parliament Committee. Without a growth mindset the University of Dundee will be caught in a vicious cycle of continuing job cuts, losing over 100+ jobs every year due to inflationary pressures. Why did UEG focus on a major restructuring that will not save money?

We’ve been supporting our members through the tough times at the University of Dundee. Huge amounts of collective and individual casework. Lobbying on ministers and MSPs. Advocating for our members in meetings with management.

Never forget that our interim Principal wrote a “recovery plan” that called for the loss of 390 more jobs. And that despite that plan be rejected by the SFC, he went to the Scottish Parliament last October to say his plans remain unchanged.

Dundee UCU@ducuuo.bsky.social

The current situation at the University of Dundee is that we are not getting our annual pay increase and that promotion processes are paused. At the same time the uni is refusing to rule out compulsory redundancies, it is advertising over 20 new senior management jobs for academic staff.

The University of Dundee just announced 21 new senior manager roles at Grade 10 or above. These are designed for academics and not professional services staff. The roles will cost the university at least £2.3m a year and are being promoted as a cost saving!

This is really worth a watch. Union reps from four universities tell the true story of life working in Scottish universities.

Nigel Seaton has confirmed that there will be further substantial job losses at the University of Dundee. We’ve already lost over 500 colleagues in a year. If you are academic or academic-related staff you can join Dundee UCU. We’re fighting to save jobs and improve our working conditions.

Redundancies were ruled out on three occasions by the most senior staff member at the University of Dundee. Once to STV, once to staff and once in an interview with the Courier. Now they are denying they said it when in front of our elected representatives.

Incredibly sad

Dundee UCU@ducuuo.bsky.social

When the Gillies report was published, the expectation was that governance at the University of Dundee would improve. In all truthfulness it’s got worse. Much worse.

I am really proud to be part of a union that is standing up for all colleagues and their jobs. Our members are really special and we thank them for voting again and winning the ability to choose to take industrial action, if it comes to that.

Dundee UCU@ducuuo.bsky.social

Our members have voted to support industrial action to fight against job cuts passed today! In the ballot our 72% of members were in favour of strike action, and 90% in favour of action short of strike. Turnout was 58%. Thank you to all members, reps and officials for helping us get the vote out.
