We will meet their bullets and their fear with love for our neighbor. We are the full box of paints and we will paint this country with all our colors. I truly believe we will!

Those who label sincerity “cringe” need to find the courage to believe in something. I reject all attempts to tear down my belief in fundamental freedoms and the rule of law. Stand up! Rise up! Step out of the darkness of the darkness, singing “We the People …” Thank you, all you frogs out there!

Everyone’s entitled to equal protection and to pursue their own happiness under the law. Don’t give into hate or discrimination. Defend Constitutional protections! Do not buy into the Right’s anti-trans narrative. It’s un-American and we are better than that! www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

As July 4th passes, I do feel shame we allowed the corrupt purchase within the halls of power. I also feel pride for our nation of immigrants, a fiercely independent, fair dealing people. Many moments make our history, with glimmers of greatness. God grant we rise and bend the future toward justice!

We will use their horrific agenda to turn voters against them by the millions in the midterms. And yes, there will be midterms. Don’t even think about voicing defeatism and doing their work for them.

America is beautiful, contradictory, unfinished. I am proud of our country even as we constantly strive to make it better, to protect and deepen our democracy, to fulfill its promise for each and every person who calls it home. Happy Independence Day. No Kings in America.

I’m reading a guidebook that has a table of useful French words and phrases for navigating Paris. “Rendez-moi mon porte-monnaie!”made this short list. “Give me back my wallet!” whereas “Where is the nearest bathroom?” is conspicuously absent.

If only we had an administration that cared about actual people and tried to solve their real problems, instead of undermining science, education and everything that makes America great and treating one of the once most respected and important responsibilities in the world as a reality tv show.

“Building Harlequin’s Moon” by Brenda Cooper and Larry Niven is a damned fine novel! Epic in scope, well-drawn, compelling characters and a tremendous climax. I highly recommend reading it!

This is the time for poets, bards and singers! This is the time to shout! We are in a life and death struggle of ideas! What you believe is important. What you know will carry you forward through this dark time! You are important and what you want matters more than what those in power want of you.

Few people retain empathy through uncomfortable truths that challenge their assumptions. It is very difficult to perceive another human as part of your tribe when their life, appearance, their very existence is alien to yours. If we are to survive, we must stretch ourselves.

And he had a heart of gears and wires, powered by gasoline, the fires of avarice, and no governor of conscience. He was a machine of this moment, chaotic and without a compass. We, the sorcerer’s apprentice set him in motion. Pray the sorcerer returns while there is yet something left to save.

Wow, I’ve gotten so untrusting these days. Got a request from a friend via messenger for my address. Checked via text if it was legit. Then I called them to voice verify because I didn’t trust her phone wasn’t hacked. And tech is supposed to free us! Shit!

We need to keep our health care system safe from politics. Please demand your congressional leaders stay away from trans healthcare and leave it to the privacy of doctor and patient. Vote against restricting trans healthcare.

The thing I now understand is that if we want positive change we must translate facts and truths (crushing inequality, climate in crisis) into more compelling stories than those of our opponents. Tolkien understood this and based his magic on which wizard had the stronger song. We need a new song!

Reading Nexus, by Yuval Noah Harrari. Both depressing and enlightening. Story (intersubjective reality) over Truth (objective reality) wins every time. I hope the ending leaves me uplifted instead of feeling squashed like a bug.

I feel like we’ve always lived our present moment balanced on a knife’s edge. It has always felt like we could tip into the abyss if we took a wrong step. Looking back at what has changed, what I see is the knife keeps getting bigger, sharper, and now our feet are bleeding.

To grab the limelight, Nancy Mace has targeted Sarah McBride, the nation’s first elected trans House member. The vitriol from Mace has been contemptible. This is in sharp contrast with McBride, who has acted commendably and with grace. And ironically, McBride now has high national visibility.

I’ve been listening to the Philosophize This! Podcast. It’s a great survey of the history of philosophy from the pre socratics to modern times. Steven West hosts the podcast and takes us on a journey through Western, Eastern and Mideastern thought. It’s very well done!

Bathroom bills are not about protecting women. They are about erasure. I’m more worried about the people championing the bills. They clearly do more other things in a bathroom than I do. Or anyone I know. Or want to know.

Got my first personalized rejection letter with comments on what needed fixing for the editors. Not a resubmit situation, but a very nice, “No, thank you!” Most inspiring “no” I’ve received in a long time!
