Intro for new followers: I'm a long-time (i.e. old) Python and Web developer. Now mostly apply that to digital humanities and corpus linguistics with focus on historical languages (especially Ancient Greek) and Tolkien. Also education, data visualization, music theory, and a handful of other things.

My friend Jonathan Robie passed away yesterday. I knew him for thirty years. We met in Web standards meetings and bonded over our common interest in Biblical Greek. For a couple of decades we stayed in touch mostly on mailing lists and forums like b-greek, both interested in language pedagogy.

Jonathan was not everyone's cup of tea. He often clashed with people. But never with me. We always understood each other. At conferences, Jonathan understood my non-shy introversion better than anyone else. He always understood when I just wanted to be alone in my hotel room at the end of the day.

I never really knew why but, when he first got his cancer diagnosis, I was the first person outside family that he told. We continued to work on projects together. Despite his tiring treatments, he wanted to continue to contribute. He was a kind, gentle, generous, supportive man and I will miss him.

Then, in 2015, he invited me to speak at the Society of Biblical Literature. The four or five times I spoke at SBL in subsequent years were all thanks to Jonathan. I attended what became the Copenhagen Alliance thanks to Jonathan. He then got me hired to work on translation alignment standards.

For the German election we wanted to use a cartogram of German election districts but didn't find anything good, so we created our own. Here's a little nerd thread how the final algorithm worked 🤓 🧵 #gis #cartogram #election #datavis #cartography

I'd like to think I'm proof that it *is* possible to found a tech company whose name is a Tolkien reference *and* to actually understand Tolkien.

This is already about to hit $1m, 20x their goal. These were already on my list to digitize, index, and produce detailed linguistic and narrative analyses of (like what we do at @digitaltolkien.com or @projectamaze.com) but I might prioritize them now. All unofficially of course, unless...

Today is a big day for Apple with the launch of the iPhone Duo, but it also marks the 25th anniversary of the announcement of the iPod. The iPod revolutionised music, but also the future of Apple. Listen to the story of how the iPod changed everything on Designed in California

"How did you get into tabletop role-playing games?" 1985, age 11, asked my parents to buy me the AD&D PHB and DMG while we were travelling around Europe. First played with others that knew what they were doing at the end of 1985 while living with my older cousin for a few months.

Book launch today! My new book, "Why You Should Read More Fiction" (Johns Hopkins), is part of a wave of digital humanities work that explains why reading fiction is so important for our minds, especially right now. I hope you'll pick up a copy and spread the word. #digitalhumanities #fiction

I was originally going to do my PhD remotely but ended up moving here to Germany because of an unscrupulous employer forcing my departure from the US. I'm so glad I'm here, though, because I have an awesome group of fellow doctoral candidates in the lab that I'm excited to be on the journey with.

I think of myself as an older brother to my fellow doctoral candidates but, in reality, I’m old enough to be their father.

As you can see, I haven't ceased to work on Celtic data on @jtauber.com's Asterisk (though I had to take a break because of my real job 😭). I tried to incorporate as many rules I could find for the Gaelic branch but I'm still far off and I haven't touched orthography very much yet 💀

This was my first copy of The Hobbit that started it all for me.

I don’t know what kind of lectures you’re attending today, wherever you are in the world, but I’m pretty sure your lecturer didn’t show up dressed as a hobbit, with a pipe instead of a laser pointer! 🧙‍♂️ Yes, this is the first lecture of Digital Tolkien, taught by @jtauber.com.
