Kind of interesting how paltry the responses to this have been, especially if you view it in the most restricted sense: historical novel by a practicing academic historian, not strongly inflected by genre conventions of mystery, romance, or fantasy/scifi.*

Dr Anna Hájková@ankahajkova.bsky.social

Historian hive! do you know any academic historian who wrote a novel that was a historical novel? Say, Lawrence Douglas from Amherst College wrote two novels but they are contemporary. So not that.

*I hadn't heard of the Kamensky/Lepore novel, Blindspot, which seems to fit the strict sense mentioned above. But it is telling that it is Lepore's eighth most popular book according to LibraryThing:

A useful reminder of what Gustavus Adolphus was up to at this point in the #30yearswar. Also interesting that this bit of news circulated from Nürnberg, not from the east.

Just saw this show. Very good, though small to cover six artists. Just learned that one of the artists, Kay Sekimachi, just celebrated her 100th birthday.

Postwar artist S. Neil Fujita, who designed ~50 album covers for Columbia Records in the late 1950s as “the label’s first in-house art director,” is one of six Japanese-American artists featured in a new Barnes Foundation show — see @natechinen.bsky.social www.wrti.org/arts-desk/20...

Looking forward to this talk. It has made me review so much of the extant literature on these individuals. Broad hint, some of these men were continuing their service from the #ThirtyYearsWar - but most were fresh out of Scotland. Why? (And where did they go?) 🗃️🪖 #17thCentury #EarlyModern #MilHist

Trés très heureux d'annoncer ce magnifique livre d'une grande amie. Myriam Marrache Gouraud, Les Caméléons de Peiresc, tout beau tout frais! #renaissance #histoiredessciences #curiosités

A very nice introduction to Hainhofer's cabinets. (As a side quest you can try to count how many different ways the auto transcription program spells Hainhofer.)

The final episode in Series 2 of Glimpses of German History is now LIVE! In this episode, Amelia Hutchinson tells us about Philipp Hainhofer's seventeenth century Pomeranian Cabinet and its grandiose past - check out the video here: youtu.be/yML0xYIxXIQ 1/2

Interesting that the wedding was deemed important enough for a newsletter in and around the war reporting. This is presumably the wedding of the son of the Martinic who was defenestrated in 1618.

Just returning from an inspiring conference on decorated papers in Hamburg! Learned so much and a really wonderful experience viewing the Abschatz album with experts and decorated paper makers who brought their own unique perspectives.

It's Nobel season. Someone somewhere must have done a ranking and analysis of how successful each of the prizes has been over time at honoring the deserving, not honoring the undeserving, and not failing to honor the deserving. Presumably either Chemistry or Physics would come out on top.

Good thread. I think this is the key point.

A culture of impunity is an *incredibly* powerful social force, and we’ve seen again and again that where such cultures occur, they are basically always responsible for widespread abuse. It’s not the nicest thing to think about, but it’s also something that societies have, often too late, learned…

I think I missed this fun thread on paleography when it first appeared. I remember when I first started in the archives being happy when a document in Latin turned up because I could at least make out the words. It does take a while to get the rhythm of old handwriting.

It’s #HandwritingDay so I thought I’d share a thread about Renaissance handwritten documents I worked with in the research that led to “Inventing the Renaissance,” and the best and worst scripts I’ve ever seen. 1/? (Continuing countdown to the release of my *absurdly fat* *absurdly orange* book!)
