New preprint! 🎉 I analysed 1660 papers from 4 psychology journals and found materials sharing went from 9% of papers in 2015 to 82% in 2025, and these materials *do* get downloaded — a median of 135 times each. BUT shared code is often hard to run. doi.org/10.31234/osf... Let's walk through it 🧵

I am currently recruiting for a 2-year postdoc/research fellow role at the University of Auckland here in New Zealand, focusing on auditory perception, hearing, and music in older adults, including people with Alzheimer's disease or other dementias ~NZ$100k/yr, flexible start date, please apply!

Hi all! Anybody know of recentish data on researcher perceptions of open science practices that ask questions like, "I think it's good for the field when studies are preregistered"? I found Houtkoop et al (2018) on data sharing, but am hoping for data on other practices and more recent!

Postdoc available! There are two T32 positions at Minnesota focusing on developmental psychopathology, with a large selection of potential mentors. I could serve as primary mentor for someone interested in intersections with metascience and/or diversity. Apply now! drive.google.com/file/d/18SoO...

Psychology folks! I'm trying to identify broad principles of Psychology that describe phenomena in multiple subdisciplines. For example "Psychological phenomena have physiological correlates" or "Information processing is optimized for the training data." Would be delighted for suggestions!

Background is that I'm working on a topics-based, open access Intro to Psych course that starts with these basic principles and shows how they apply in a range of topics. Also grateful for any readings you know of on the topic!

Hi all! I'm on sabbatical this year and have bandwidth to zoom into lab meetings to talk about open science in cog psych and speech research and/or how to implement practices that reduce research errors! (www.carleton.edu/perception-l...). Email me if that sounds fun to you too!

Can large language models stand in for human participants? Many social scientists seem to think so, and are already using "silicon samples" in research. One problem: depending on the analytic decisions made, you can basically get these samples to show any effect you want. THREAD 🧵

Experimentology is out today!!! A group of us wrote a free online textbook for experimental methods, available at experimentology.io - the idea was to integrate open science into all aspects of the experimental workflow from planning to design, analysis, and writing.

Another fun event at @carleton.edu last night! A multidisciplinary analysis of whether Severance is possible, featuring neuroscience (Julie Neiworth), cognitive psychology (me), and philosophy (Jason Decker)! Take home: it’s complicated. But real fun to think through.

I started a new thing at Carleton College! It highlights the breadth of a liberal arts education, reminds students that faculty don't know EVERYTHING, and is loads of fun! In "Guess Lectures," faculty give 7-minute talks using someone else’s slides from an unrelated discipline, sight unseen.

Definitely use the word “composition.” The guy in that painting looks kind of like Jude Law. Hey, that pastoral scene has wheat in it, plenty to say about Triticum aestivum. 10 minutes is up. Riotous applause ensues.

It has been loads of fun and is super popular (full auditoriums). It also happens to be very little work to organize. If you'd like to offer Guess Lectures at your institution, I wrote up a set of instructions to make it easier for you. Reach out with questions! docs.google.com/document/d/1...

Imagine this. A biology professor stands at the podium. A wheel-of-fortune style spinner rolls past “Philosophy, ”Cinema and Media Studies,” and “Religion” and lands on “Art History.” Deep breath. What does she remember from that painting class sophomore year?

SUPER EXCITED!!!!

During April 2020 (aka the toilet paper and Tiger King era of lockdown), @naseemdh.com, @violetsarebrown.bsky.social, @juliafstrand.bsky.social, and I decided to submit a registered report for an in-person project. 5 years and 1 in-principle acceptance later, we have submitted Stage 2!!

Can confirm that my NSF grant "How False Beliefs Form & How to Correct Them" was cancelled today because it is "not in alignment with current NSF priorities" Shocking that understanding how people are misled by false information is now a forbidden topic. Our work will continue but at a smaller scale

New post! Should we hold back criticisms of scientific practices for fear that they will be weaponized by political attacks on science? Absolutely not. We need to recognize the distinction between scientific arguments and ideological arguments. getsyeducated.substack.com/p/science-re...
