New blog post up: if you've been paying close attention to LLM prices, you may have noticed that they have dropped *significantly* over the past few months, which is not what I expected. minimaxir.com/2026/10/chea...

@quantamagazine.org are the best science explainers in the world. That is all. This article is fantastic! I had no idea transposons were thought to be key in evolving eyes, immune systems & placentas. You know, the things that make us, us! www.quantamagazine.org/how-virus-li...
Dug around and I see that all of these "Focal News" sites are stolen from real reporting, and rewritten with AI. focalnews.org is registered via NameCheap so they're obfuscating their identity. Interestingly, it also seems like Google de-indexed the site completely (probably cause of bots/spam)
Side note - what is Focal News? They have no "about us" page or other disclosure, seem to cover both local and national news, and seem to produce mostly AI-generated "news" that I suspect is riffed off another journalist's news. (Aside: not an endorsement of Pangram. I already suspected AI.)
It looks like Focal News targets a few local news shops (@thebaltimorebanner.com, @wmar2news.bsky.social, @baltimorebrew.bsky.social, and Fox 45) and immediately rewrites their articles with AI.
You can see where they operate here: focalnews.org/cities/ Interestingly Wisconsin has two cities represented, while New York has none. Could that be explained by the fact that Wisconsin is a huge battleground/swing state?

For example, Fern Shen at the @baltimorebrew.bsky.social wrote this article at 10:30am on 10/17/26: baltimorebrew.com/2026/10/17/r... Two and a half hours later, Baltimore Focal News rewrote it with AI and published it here focalnews.org/baltimore-md..., and then posted: bsky.app/profile/balt...

Had this idea in lockdown, half-built it, forgot about it, remembered it again, though might as well finish it.

if you aren't a huge nerd this is terrifying and very funny php is trash. insecure by design. we have known this forever. it still runs some very high fraction of the entire internet, including all wordpress sites and for some reason tumblr anyway everyone using it may be pwned
details leaked. this vulnerability is a full unauthenticated unconditional remote code execution exploit against any service running on a PHP version from 5.4 until latest yeah if anything deserves CVSS 11, this is it. this is CATACLYSMICALLY bad.

We found that the most gendered experience wasn’t work-life balance, the focus of most retention efforts. It was feeling devalued, in formal evaluations, but particularly in everyday interactions. Unlike every other topic, the gender gap in devaluation was larger among more senior faculty.

Screw-ups should be costly. There should be a high government fine on top of it, plus paying to clean-up and re-secure the systems hacked. These are equivalent to industrial accidents and should be treated as such, imo

So this story won't receive much attention, but... is kind of a big deal? It sure looks like the plaintiffs lawyers in the big copyright case against OpenAI/Microsoft did some seriously sketchy shit to manufacture evidence and sneak it into the case....
