We are hiring a tenure-track assistant professor in computational biology at USC! area: AI method development and its applications in biology. Do you combine quantitative research with a drive to develop innovative approaches for tackling biological questions? usccareers.usc.edu/job/los-ange...

Lots of good points about difficulty with complex systems. As I read The Brain, In Theory (@romainbrette.bsky.social) it is striking the amount of machine/computation metaphors here. I guess I'm not so optimistic about ANN models of behavior telling us much about brains, robots yes

My journey from the eminently decipherable retina to the entangled mess that is the mammalian motor system. No turning back now. !https://www.thetransmitter.org/methods/what-to-do-when-traditional-mechanistic-approaches-no-longer-work/

I'm delighted to announce that I'll join MIT EECS as an Assistant Professor next Fall! I will be recruiting graduate students this cycle, please apply if you're interested in the science of deep learning! Despite the ambient doomerism, now is a great time to do research.

Thinking about how much mathematics I can learn by interacting with AI makes me less sad about the state of maths in this brave new world. I still worry about the students at all levels, though.

Really nice use-case for AI in teaching: Have it read through my assignments, worksheets, and lectures and draft the exam and rubrics. Do some manual checking and iteration. Then have it generate variations on the problems for the study guide. Brilliant, saved me hours, and the work looks good!

(1/2) I’m starting a NeuroAI and comp neuro lab at the University of Toronto! How do brains and AI learn from ongoing experience? How do they connect delayed outcomes to past actions, adapt to change, and retain what matters? Recruiting funded PhD students for Fall 2027. Links in the reply 👇

How much representational diversity exists around a trained network? A lot, it turns out! Moving a ViT’s weights by 1.3% while preserving its predictions, its representations end up less similar to the original than a random-init ViT’s ‼️ New paper: Hessian Null Space Continuation (HNC) 💫🧵 (1/12)

Came across the well-known quote of Oppenheimer in a book: “When you see something that is technically sweet, you go ahead and do it and you argue about what to do about it only after you have had your technical success. That is the way it was with the atomic bomb.” That's the way it is with AI now.

Hi all, I'm happy to announce that I have started at the University of Oregon as an assistant professor! My group will use computational methods to study learning and synaptic plasticity. I will be hiring grad students this year--please reach out if you're interested! colinbre@uoregon.edu

Here is a nice field experiment on LLM induced opinion convergence. My office did a press conference and I've been monitoring responses on LinkedIn for the past few days. Not counting those directly involved in the presser, there are ca 50 people who have posted supposedly their own opinion on it

I let my New Yorker subscription lapse and am interested in subscribing to another magazine with excellent long- and short-form writing about all kinds of things. Any recommendations?

In our #NeurIPS2026 spotlight “Parallel-in-Time Training of Recurrent Neural Networks for Dynamical Systems (DS) Reconstruction” (preprint: arxiv.org/abs/2605.12683) we speed up training of nonlinear RNNs on time series from chaotic DS by >100x by combining DEER with generalized teacher forcing.

Four days ago, a scientist was surprised by the news that Anthropic discovered new virus genes for making DNA. He says he’s been studying them for years—and feeding his data to Anthropic’s AI as part of his own research. Coincidence? Here’s my story. nyti.ms/3VSWayc

nyti.msDid Anthropic’s A.I. Really Make a Scientific Discovery on Its Own? (Gift Article)An expert at the University of Copenhagen said his team had been sharing its research with the company’s A.I. model, Claude, and that its new finding matched their work.

#Psilocybin🍄 shifts visual cortex dynamics towards a state of surprise! Thrilled to share our work w/ OpenScope at @alleninstitute.org lead by postdoc @roberto-defilippo.bsky.social. We combined visual change detection w/ Neuropixels recordings in mice to uncover how psilocybin changes circuits 1/

Cool work! Despite being someone who has worked on random models, it makes sense there would also be structure. An interesting question for me (which would require connectomics for multiple animals) is whether there's still variability for this and if the structure shown here is just "on average."

Preprint time! This is a cool one. Complex systems, be they neural nets, interacting genes, or power grids, can produce diverse dynamics-- things like point attractors, limit cycles, and chaos. The dynamic landscape you get depends on how elements interact. But those interactions can also change!
