One week in and already smashing stretch goals. If you love the Speccy, this oneโ€™s for you. Go back Kimโ€™s book!

Kim Justice@kimjustice.bsky.social

It's been a week and the Rubber Keyed Wonder book's doing great! Stretch goals are out - we've hit 1 for a feature on the Spectrum clones, and there's 2 more to hit; a feature on cool accessories, and another on some very bad games. Don't miss out! Back it here: www.kickstarter.com/projects/48k...

๐Ÿฅˆ The Silver Play Button has landed! Two weeks after hitting 100K subscribers (and one very eaten cake later ๐ŸŽ‚), it's finally here. Lighter and shinier than I expected! 100,000 of you wanting to watch me code and try to fix old tech still doesn't feel real. Thank you all so much ๐Ÿ’ฟ

It came with a letter from YouTube asking if I remember my first subscriber, my 100th, my 1,000th... ๐Ÿ“œ I do. And I'll definitely remember my 100,000th ๐Ÿฅน Also a shoutout to Rick, who inspected and packed it with great care ๐Ÿ“ฆ lol

Just hit 100,000 subscribers on YouTube... and I'm genuinely lost for words! ๐ŸŽ‰ ... So big thanks goes out to all that have watched, commented and shared, and to the retro community as a whole. As without this support we wouldn't have made it here! So excited for what's still to come.๐Ÿ™

Who else loves new tools?๐Ÿ™‹ New toy in the workshop ๐Ÿ‘€ Just set up the Carvera Air CNC, big thanks to Makera! Can't wait to put it through its paces on some upcoming builds ... What do you think I should make/or fix with this?๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Love to hear your ideas down below๐Ÿ‘‡ #CarveraAir #CNC #ad

... plus wanted to see what detail it could pull off straight out the box๐Ÿ”, and wow, blown away with the result๐Ÿ˜Š. Can't wait to get stuck into some proper projects next๐Ÿ› ๏ธ. On a side note, does anyone know a good source for CNC supplies/ especially aluminium plate in the UK?

If you haven't already, and are into retro gaming/computing check out the @thisweekinretro.bsky.social podcast over on YouTube for all the latest retro news. My version of the T2 Pin program I wrote in Turbo Pascal to run on my Atari Portfolio, even gets a mention in this episode. Cheers guys!

This Week in Retro@thisweekinretro.bsky.social

Gremlin Graphics is reborn, bringing back yesterday's moles and springs! Also: Atari Portfolio get-rich-quick schemes and the latest "hardware specs don't matter anymore" messaging. Plus: a Gotek upgrade, a new interview with a Commodore engineering legend, and much more. youtu.be/zhJQ_jL-Y_Y

Coding like it's the 90s๐ŸŽ‰ ... What was the first programming language you ever learned? ... Had great fun learning #TurboPascal and coding my very own #Terminator2 PIN program that you can see in my very latest YouTube video, link below (cont...)

What's everyone's favourite sci-fi movie?๐Ÿ›ธ ... ๐Ÿšจ*NEW* YouTube video *JUST DROPPED* where I recreate through some detective๐Ÿ•ต๏ธ work the #Terminator2 "EASY MONEY" ATM scene from scratch, in Turbo Pascal 7, on a real 1989 #Atari Portfolio. The exact same hardware John Connor used in the movie๐Ÿ’ป (cont...)

... was surprised how simple it was to set up. Compatible with any #RaspberryPi 5 or compute module. Just attach the supplied display cable, and power, and with a fully updated Pi, it booted straight away to a working display. No drivers were needed.

I'm BACK ๐Ÿ™Œ after a 5 month break, I've just dropped a new video over on YouTube, woo-hoo!! ๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽฌ What transparent tech do you remember from the 90s/00s? ๐Ÿ“ผ๐Ÿ’พ Drop your favourites below! โฌ‡๏ธ This one's a fun repair ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ: battery corrosion almost killed this Game Boy Color ๐ŸŽฎ๐Ÿ”‹๐Ÿ’€, but not on my watch! (cont...)

CEX now selling real/original Commodore 64s!!!๐Ÿ˜ฑ ... Looks like some poor member of staff, couldn't tell the difference between the modern Retro Games Ltd. "The C64" remake and a real one from the 80s๐Ÿคฃ

๐ŸงฉPUZZLE TIME!!! How many #COMMODORE words can you spot? ... Been having great fun, typing in on my #C64 the demo programs from my recent SIMONS' BASIC pickup. With one being this fantastic #WORDSEARCH generator, as such I thought it'd be fun to share this retro themed puzzle ... (cont...๐Ÿงต)

... Like I say, since getting it, I've been slowly typing out all the DEMO programs straight from the book like it is 1983. So, if anyone wants to try them, and run them up for themselves (they all run perfectly on the VICE emulator), let me know, and I'll get the BASIC files posted somewhere.

Who remembers LaserDisc๐Ÿ’ฟ players? Lucky ยฃ25 carboot (flea market) pick-up today. A 1982 Pioneer LD-1100 and what seems to be new in box as well, with the laser lens cap and transport locks still in place! (cont...)

Good news, it powers on, but only got a black screen when I tried with a newer PAL disc (from what I've read it may be not compatible with this older model). So, still not 100% certain if this is NTSC or the PAL version, so going to get some discs to check. Let me know what you think!

Who's looking forward to ZZAP! Live 2026 in May? The ultimate event in the UK for both #C64 & #CommodoreAmiga fans! Only a few weeks to go, but if you haven't already got tickets๐ŸŽŸ๏ธ, use my code "KARI64" to get 10% off entry ... See you there!!! tinyurl.com/uxdvrrzu @zzap64micro.bsky.social

Who remembers 80s/90s video gaming magazines? And do you miss them? ๐ŸŽฎ๐Ÿ•น๏ธ ... Having a great time going through this stack of vintage ZZap!64 magazines that my dad bought for me, knowing my retro obsession! ๐Ÿ˜„ ... Which ones did you buy back in the day, C&VG, Nintendo Power or something else? (cont...)

Who remembers programming in BASIC? ... Nice pickup from Entertainment World in B'ham. Something I been wanting to try out for a while, Simons' Basic for the #Commodore #C64 ... Now have to ask, what other versions of BASIC, or other 80s programming languages do you recommend I check out? (cont...)

... Obviously had to type in one of the example programs from the manual. And after some minor debugging (isn't that always the case with type-ins lol) I'm pleased to share it's works!!! Now going to check it out some more :)

Who remembers PC gaming in the 1990s? If so, what's your favourite game from this era? ... Gaming like it's the 1990s with a #retrogaming CD-ROM classic everyone keeps recommending, that being the original 1995 RTS (real-time strategy) game, Command & Conquer from Westwood Studios. (cont...)

And have to say, C&C and Red Alert both run like a dream on my recently rebuilt #WindowsXP, Pentium MMX 233 MHz computer, with its 256 MB RAM (i know way over spec), S3 ViRGE/DX graphics card, and Sound Blaster sound card. What specs did you have? (cont...)

Must admit though, first time playing the original #C&C as my first introduction to this franchise was through the Red Alert 3 that I played via STEAM, hence my cosplay-ish homage to Tanya today with the look. Top marks to all those who noticed that! Happy #retrogaming everyone!

Who misses video games stores?๐ŸŽฎ and which one do you remember going to the most?๐Ÿฌ ... And do you remember walking into a video game store back in the 80s/90s/00s and being hit with those epic branded signs and display cases? Bold logos, colourful epic posters and stands... pure magic!โœจ (cont...)

And talking of making... I'm stepping out of my usual retro content for this one because I'm thrilled to announce I'll be attending #MakersCentral as a guest this year! (16-17 May 2026, NEC, Birmingham) can't wait to meet fellow makers and share the maker vibes. (cont...)

Anyway, now I'm hooked on making signs, so have to ask which classic brand do you think I should tackle next for the workshop? Drop your suggestions below: PlayStation? SNES? Game Boy? Amiga? Neo Geo? Or something else?๐Ÿ‘พ๐Ÿ•น๏ธ

And whilst I'm a bit too young to have experienced this myself, I just had to recreate some of that nostalgic signage vibe for my workshop ... So, with some expert tips from my dad (a former signmaker) and my trusty laser cutter, I think we absolutely nailed them! (cont...)

... What an absolute time capsule for the #C64. Loving the humour, reviews, and how vivid and bright each page looks. Also, obsessed with the covers by the legendary Oliver Frey. ... but seriously, what's with all the premium rate phone line adverts? Did you ask bill payer's permission ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ“ž (cont...)

What computer did you first learn to code on?๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿ’ป (or not๐Ÿ˜‚) ... Gaming like it's 1982 tonight!๐Ÿ”ฅ... Still can't believe they squeezed a complete chess game, with computer opponent, into just 672 bytes on the ZX81. No castling or promotion, but still an absolute masterpiece of coding wizardry.๐Ÿง™โ€โ™‚๏ธ (cont...)

... we're so spoilt nowadays with gigabytes of RAM to play with ... so hats off to those incredible 80s programmers who squeezed amazing games into 48K/or 64K on the Speccy and C64! Drop your first coding machine in the comments below, bonus points if it had a language other than BASIC๐Ÿ˜„ (cont...)

... on another note, saved two more Sinclair ZX81s ... just needed fresh ULAs to bring them back to life. Thank goodness for modern FPGA replacements, because original chips are getting harder to find now.๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Also on the topic of ZX81s ... what games does everyone recommend I check out next? ๐Ÿค”
