Stuck on something I'm editing so watching British high schoolers eat Detroit pizza. Reactions are about what you'd expect, and again I say Detroit is Chicago's cousin on our mama's side.

Holy cow. The Guinea-Bissau offices of the two Danish researchers who were funded by RFK Jr. to conduct an unethical experiment with the HepB vaccine just had their offices raided and vaccines seized by the police. Great work on reporting this story once again by @melodyschreiber.com.

Telling a man that is funny AF. Though asking "Who told you I care what you like?" is also high comedy

A person of interest has been identified after a 21-year-old woman told police that she was sexually assaulted at a fraternity party near the University of Chicago last weekend. Neither the woman nor the person of interest is a student, according to the university. www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...

If your historical setting is a major city it was never an all white place. Traders, migrants, laundry, railroad...pick a time period, somebody of color was always present. Sometimes as servants, more often as people going about their business. That's not DEI casting, that's actual history.

It's just been announced at NYCC so I guess I can tell you that I'm writing The Regulators for Marvel. My five issue comic series will be out in 2027. Mutants, magic and monsters woven into the very fabric of Jim Crow America.

Part of why I don't like the AI-or-bust economy is the constant flopsweat of people on the news who say this HAS to work. Quit making everyone so anxious. Goddamn. If this is the next Google then why are you acting like this? I don't remember being told to buy an iPhone at gunpoint.

I regret to inform you that my regular sleeping habits, weekly steak and daily high fiber grilled salad have in fact improved my blood work. Perhaps, just perhaps, you do in fact have to take care of yourself.

Every conversation about the Cornell case is irritating me because there is no way there was just one victim. Just one report. I need people to stop talking like no one had any idea they were rapists. Go crack open those middle school and high school records.

Also this is the thread about the woman who told me about murdering her ex when I was pregnant with kid #1. Again, the women are unlikely to move the way you expect if the danger continues to grow.

So someone asked me to retell the story of the old lady that told me about killing her husband. Are we ready for a trip back in time to 1999? Some of you already know this story, but if you don't it is a wild ride. Apply all appropriate trigger warnings!

I'll resurrect that link, but I want to talk about my aunt Penny real quick. Because shorter and incredibly instructive. Penny was married to a man named Ray. He was a terrible person tbh and was nearly 15 years older than her when they met. My granddaddy wanted to kill him when he found out.

I don't know the last time @karnythia.blacksky.app told the story about the older lady on the bus, but if she's willing, this seems like a good time to retell it.

But you better ask your elders, because every older woman I have ever told this story looks at me and nods. They talk about ipecac in food, cast iron upside heads, and the best way to make a man leave you alone. We have heard these stories since we were kids. Some of the men will wake up dead.

Ask your questions, but know my praying auntie robbed banks, beat men, and would fight Mike Tyson. I can only tell you that when my ex got handsy I also fought and during our divorce I threatened to burn down North Texas if he even thought about taking my child. Penny is unhinged and mine are loose.

Penny is..wild is the best way to describe her. She's in her 80s and saved now, but I promise you I wouldn't try her. Because over the years that followed she was that man's karma for every crime he might have ever thought about committing. She slung him all over the street more than once.

When I asked her why they never got divorced she said "He had two pensions, why would I give up those checks?" Now in her 80s she's very comfortable financially and before that man shuffled off this mortal coil he paid her bills and called her ma'am. Now you may think she's an exception.

They get there and the screaming is loud. People are trying to get in, and they force the door open finally expecting to find Penny curled up somewhere being abused. They find her with Ray in a headlock, and every time she hits Ray she screams. Tone shifts to "Penny stop you're going to kill him"

Friends, stopping is not on her to-list but eventually they convince her. They did not break up which would have been logical, they stayed together and every time he felt froggy she beat his ass. Except for the times she stabbed him. There was scalding in there too. And a couple of shootings

Of course everyone is trying to get Penny to come home and that's when it comes out that she married this 33 year old man at 18. My granddaddy is .38 hot, and someone convinces him to wait her out. Because Ray is violent and Penny is young. The shine will wear off. And it does a month or so later

They get a phone call from a neighbor that's hysterical. There's screaming coming from the apartment and no one can get the door open. The neighbor is convinced Ray is killing Penny. 100% certain she's in danger. So, they rush over there because Lord knows Chicago police might never show up.

Now, Ray had an ex who he apparently abused. So when Penny took off with him the whole family was worried. And one day the neighbors saw Penny and Ray at their new place. Black Chicago is small now and was even smaller then so people immediately told my grandparents where to find their wayward child

So I said I was tired of the discourse about NHJ and I am. But I am also astonished at the number of people who are certain their choice is better. Because the parenting report card isn't in yet and baby, some of your kids will be asking why you made them go to a racist school based on test scores

I was a terrorist. Like, pretty sure there are still people calling me that bitch about meetings from 15 years ago. Because fundamentally no part of public education is working to provide great outcomes without pressure. Oldest has a degree, a job, and a family. Youngest is still in college.

My kids had a "If the adults fucked up? Call mom. If we fucked up, call dad" rule for themselves. My parenting was far from perfect. It was effective and we have good relationships. But chances are excellent we will all be getting C's and D's in some categories on our parenting report cards

If you knew me when the kids were little you remember me taking it to hell in IEP meetings every year. Kiddo was at a top ranked diverse school and Husbeast and I still had to play good cop/bad cop at every meeting. People overestimate their parenting acumen and underestimate damaging systems

My kids were at an award winning public school in a mixed race, mixed income area. And it still got quiet on the creek when I had to come in that building about a problem. Because nobody wanted to be next on my to do list. I called central office, a lawyer, and the state board. My kids are great

These grilled salads have taken over my house. Today it was broccoli, chicken, bacon, sun dried tomatoes, red onion, parmesan, and Honeycrisp apples in a spicy Caesar dressing. I regret nothing.

Today's grilled salad is Brussels sprouts, bacon, red onion, cranberries, and pumpkin seeds in a miso honey vinaigrette. Will make it again, but probably add apple and maybe feta.

These headlocks are good for you!

First off, Mikki is an absolute menace. “Indianapolis may love you, but I'm a Chicagoan. I’m obligated to dunk on you and your city.” Something about keeping me humble. Second off, these pics depict our relationship over the years: 2018 (Mo*Con) 2024 (GenCon), and Print Row Litfest (Saturday).
