Academic working on Gender & Language in Greek tragedy, and gender in historical video games. Also a lot of women's cricket chat. Views all mine.

Okay Google scholar I agree I am interested in the Routledge Companion to Video Games and History co-edited by a certain K. Cook but not so much that I need 12 emails about it none of which wonder at all whether I might be connected to that certain co-editor. Sigh.

Depressed to see Turning Point UK set up on the Strand today - but really heartened that you can't hear any of the bile they are churning out, because they and their views are being very loudly rejected by the students. The kids are all right.

Elgar 1 is such hard work. But it is lovely to have something totally else to think of for an evening a week other than the ruins of my academic career. Ah there's that in its favour.

Suspected it was coming, but what terrible news. Bioware games top my favourites lists across the board. There was nothing like them.

It's dark and cold and wet here - all of a sudden autumn. Although the recent rain also means my balcony is full of summer annuals that are suddenly finding it not unbearably dry, for the first time all year, and are newly flowering. Climate chaos.

Attention Scottish voice actors! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🎤 We’re gearing up to cast an upcoming project, which will require an (almost) all Scottish cast! So watch this space, if it’s nae bother.

I get lots of adverts atm for Sussex university, and they are all highlighting the chance of having 'lecturers who actually know you'. Interesting to see if this lasts as a marketing technique or gets picked up anywhere else, in this era of massive staff cuts and large merged modules.

The horror of the lecture room PC breakdown - and how this is now amplified by the decision to go tech heavy on registering attendance.

It would be useful if travel (plug) adaptors said on them what countries they were for. I've collected so many over the last 20-odd years and I really just don't remember where they all work.

Periodically I get emails from Amazon saying things like "we thought you'd like a Nintendo switch" and I cannot understand why they make this offer but never give me the Nintendo switch. :(

Seems fair as a general statement, but really only because I am thinking more along the lines of 'In my bed = bad time/place for hedgehog' 'Picture on money = nice time/place for hedgehog'

There's a time and a place for a Hedgehog

I've had an unexpectedly ludomusical week, concluding with a lovely chat about a potential student project (not with me)! It's a lot of fun finding places where the work I do on games can intersect with so much other cool stuff on games.

I'm so tired today. Oh well, time for hours 9-11 of my workday. It's quite strange to be swamped with work, and yet apparently imminently redundant.

Your fixed-term colleagues are teaching, researching, publishing and conducting administration: 1. In university systems, cities and countries they are often unfamiliar with, in the knowledge that they are probably going to have to start over again in a new place in a couple of years.

Great discussion this morning with my third years about how political (or not) Euripides Suppliant Women is. I enjoy doing this so much - so depressing to not be able to be employed to keep doing it.

So depressed today by the number of academics I know who don't even know the issues with GenAI yet are cheerfully proposing adopting them for their and everyone else's teaching and research. What happened to critically assessing our work approaches...?

History inspires game development. This Thursday, John Beiner and I will share how the Prize Papers Project and the German Maritime Museum are helping Capstan Games bring maritime history to life in the game "Ahoy". Join our international workshop online! Link below. #earlymodern #maritimehistory

It's the @midagesmodgames.bsky.social annual virtual conference! Happy to be helping host this event once again :) It's all available online and for anyone interested in #GameDev or #Medieval history to head over and ask questions of the experts! Do take a look at their feed & links below:

The Middle Ages in Modern Games@midagesmodgames.bsky.social

It's time! The Middle Ages in Modern Games Asynchronous Conference 2026 begins TODAY, October 5th, at 9:45am UTC+1 with our opening address to kick off a fantastic programme of three days of papers. Everything you'll need is in the live programme here: middleagesinmoderngames.net/mamg26/middl...

It has to be said that the annoyance of spending my evening marking is not much improved by Turnitin constantly refreshing itself so I can't progress through reading the work...

Right we've done today's cricket inequality, let's do academia. It's the season for training on grant writing: but nearly all of this assumes you are already a researcher. There are no alternative timeslots or recordings for many events. So if you've got a clashing teaching load, forget it.

It compounds the issue of the two track situation, where people who take teaching only temp contracts (for example) get stuck there, while the people who already have research funding get more.
