You can do the same thing, buying a house and borrowing against it—ha ha, just kidding, normal people get taxed annually on their wealth via property taxes, the "you can't tax wealth, the economy will collapse!" rule applies solely to the super-rich.

Steven T. Dennis@steventdennis.bsky.social

For the fabulously wealthy, paying taxes is pretty much optional. They can borrow against their vast wealth, which is mostly an untaxed capital gain, without paying taxes. When they die, the capital gain goes to zero. And loopholes exist to bypass the estate tax too.

Tbh, this is a great illustration of why we shouldn't take Anthropic's moral claims seriously, even if they're sincerely held. Becoming wealthy and powerful warps your beliefs, bending them towards justifying and expanding that wealth and power, no matter how well-intentioned you were at the start.

Mother Jones@motherjones.com

When Anthropic was created, its co-founders pledged to commit 80% of their personal equity holdings in the company to philanthropic causes. As they prepare to take the company public, they appear to be walking back that pledge.

I'm not criticizing those who are showcasing the accomplishments of scientists, artists, and writers to debunk RFK Jr.'s comments but I think it's also important to treat them not as ignorance, but as the outright malice they are. He made those comments to claim a US citizen is unfit for the Senate.

Almost none of us benefits from an advertising business model which puts short-term profit and convenience ahead of the health of our society. But ultimately the money fuelling this comes from advertisers we all know and shop with – and this gives us a way to push back. /4

All of Trump’s foreign policy decisions seem to be based upon a nepotistic cabal of his progeny, their spouses and former business associates like Steve Witcoff. At some point, it will be necessary to enact laws and possibly a Constitutional amendment to ensure that nothing similar happens again.

In fact I will say the Earnest and Pious Charismatic Ethnic Minority political figure (AOC, Mamdani, El-Sayed) has been a pretty good bet for the American left so far, whereas the Disaffected Gruff White Guy Showcasing True Masculinity (Fetterman, Platner) has been a worse bet. Just an observation.
