I emailed Patrick Healy, assistant managing editor for standards and trust at NYT, to ask why their story about a House report with new details of rape allegations against the President of the United States included neither those details, nor a single use of the word "rape." archive.is/1s9AM

You can do the same thing, buying a house and borrowing against it—ha ha, just kidding, normal people get taxed annually on their wealth via property taxes, the "you can't tax wealth, the economy will collapse!" rule applies solely to the super-rich.

Steven T. Dennis@steventdennis.bsky.social

For the fabulously wealthy, paying taxes is pretty much optional. They can borrow against their vast wealth, which is mostly an untaxed capital gain, without paying taxes. When they die, the capital gain goes to zero. And loopholes exist to bypass the estate tax too.

The whole push for this came from a dark money group formed in March. Big victory for tech companies selling overpriced bags, abusive & lecherous security staff, and school shooters. What I get as a parent is an unfunded mandate for my local school board and daily fears about Uvalde. Gee, thanks.

Governor Josh Shapiro@governor.pa.gov

Starting next school year, a bell-to-bell cell phone ban will take effect in every single Pennsylvania classroom. We’re getting back to the basics and keeping our classrooms focused on learning.

As a white man, I just love to hear claims of racial superiority from a white guy whose life is summed up as a creepy scam artist who doesn't scam people for the money—he's a nepobaby, never had to work a day in his life—he does it because he loves killing children. Not sending our best, are we?

FWIW, Anthropic admits its current margins may not be representative. There's a bit of lucky timing here: big revenue growth while on the tail end of cheap compute contracted more than a year ago. Their future compute is... not so cheap. (1st pic their S-1, second are my graphics based on S-1.)

The unit economics here are frankly shocking they're so good. This is wildly stronger than I expected tbh.

Not a big story, it's just the Attorney General working with an imprisoned pedophile to help cover up the pedophile President's crimes conducted with his best friend for 15 years, a pedophile who the President sent, as a birthday card, a drawing of a naked adolescent girl.

Amanda Marcotte@amandamarcotte.bsky.social

This report is genuinely overwhelming, in terms of the evidence both against Trump and of a ham-fisted cover-up. Including one instance in which Ghislaine Maxwell was actually about to mention one of Trump's young accusers and Todd Blanche told her to stop talking. The media response is "yawn."

One cool thing about being a regular Dem donor is how the party tries to demoralize me before every election. I am again drowning in spam texts clearly aimed at ripping off the elderly. Several Senate candidates have worked hard, overcoming my many "stop" replies and blocks, to make me hate them.

Lol congrats to all the chuds who spent the past 24 hours clutching their pearls pretending that Obama insulted Cheesecake Factory just so Trump could actually insult it.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Trump is BIG MAD about Obama saying the White House now looks like Saddam opened a Cheesecake Factory: "He's not a smart guy. He's not smart at all ... for you to say it's a Cheesecake Factory, that just shows why you were a lousy president"

Note the key phrase "so many people." Yglesias thinks it's fine—good in fact—that American billionaires are very interested in foreign elections and routinely influence them to promote corruption and fascism. His concern is that filthy plebs like you and me might want better things for everyone.

The NYT — having been shamed for years for not posting court opinions — now does so, but only with its enraging workaround of posting a link to a page that has individual images of each page of any opinion. So, here, you load a page of 55 images that are completely unworkable for any future use.

Lula winning is great for the planet, great for Brazil, and great for people who aren't revanchist assholes everywhere in the world, but let's not forget that it's also going to make some of the worst people on Earth extremely sad and mad. We should enjoy that, as a little treat.

THE FACTORY

The indictment looks bad as a matter of appearances but these aren't crimes, SCOTUS said so. Official acts on an "as-needed" basis? Nope, McDonnell, 579 US 550. Undisclosed self-dealing? Nope, Skilling, 561 US 358. Problem here isn't just the timing, the legal substance itself is dubious.

Once mass spam texts were made legal, younger donors vanished, leaving a grassroots fundraising machine that subsists on squeezing vulnerable seniors, some of whom give hundreds of times a day. It’s a horrific model. Consultants get generationally wealthy, and the party hollows out its future.

Jake Grumbach@jakemgrumbach.bsky.social

We found that as of right now 73% of your campaign donation goes back to the consultants and vendors (!!!), four times more than just 20 years ago. Only 13% to ads. Even I was shocked.

This seems like a great way to encourage your employees to spend hours on IT security forums looking for the most insidious malware available so they can intentionally load it onto your corporate network as a matter of moral justice.

BLANCHE: The 60 day or 90 day practice is not in writing. That's not part of the justice manual. There's nothing improper

Billionaires throw a fit at the idea of an annual wealth tax... but literally everyone else already pays one via property taxes (either directly as a homeowner or secondarily as a renter). The only reason securities aren't taxed the same is because that's where the rich keep most of their wealth.

Michael Hobbes@michaelhobbes.bsky.social

As far as I can tell, literally every article on this quotes the same "expert" — a former estranged father who has an entire blog dedicated to absolving parents of any responsibility. He also sells $995 "consultations" where he will blame your kids for cutting you off.

"hey tommy-son, are ya winnin'?" "sure am timmy-dad, i got that clip of El-Sayed piledriving me into the ground with an affirmation of American values, just like you asked" "wat" "wat"

Huge follow-up reporting to my scoop: The Guardian confirmed America Next—the conservative nonprofit founded by Bobby Jindal that was offering students $ to disrupt El-Sayed events—paid a firm registered to Tommy Teepell’s dad Timmy $250k for “canvassing and influencer marketing” against El-Sayed.

I'm only half-joking when I say I'd like a breakout category of "obligated to use" vs "choose to use." E.g., I "use" Facebook and LinkedIn but I'd rather not, I'm forced to use Facebook for local/school news and LinkedIn for professional news. I wonder how common that is.

Everybody in that crowd should "feel stupid" because his claim doesn't even make sense: there's nothing special about Minnesota and Mercedes-Benz, the state's dealers & sales per capita are well below the national average. Nothing to this but more racism seeping out of Trump's cognitive septic tank.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Trump: "You go up to Minnesota -- number one place in the entire country for the sale of Mercedes-Benz. And Somalians are buying them. They come here with low IQs and no money and they get rich. Do we feel stupid? Our fraud division is getting them all."

Appalling headline from @nytimes.com, as usual doing whatever they can to make the Trump admin's lying and lawlessness look like personality clashes and psychodrama. @ms.now, in contrast, accurately conveys to the public the dishonest and dysfunctional state of the Executive branch.

The easiest way to get a big scoop in journalism is to straight-up steal it from @marisakabas.bsky.social, as we've seen over and over from "respectable" outlets.

Quoting Trump's social media post of today, Judge Reyes orders govt to explain by 8pm whether it still takes the positions it took 2 days ago. Also orders Associate AG Stan Woodward to attend hearing tomorrow.

Part of the answer to "how did we get here?" is that many major journalists—since 1998, Crawford has covered SCOTUS for PBS, ABC, and CBS—are lying bigots. Here Crawford is praising a guy who asked a dumb racist question, glitched out when asked why, then admitted he wanted a Christian theocracy.
