No matter how much we want to, we CANNOT separate this “philanthropic push” to fund science from the current state of science. Riddle me this: why would the people who supported AND funded Trumps annihilation of the IS scientific ecosystem now be rushing to fund scientific research?

Ok, so obviously the arch is terrible and stupid and if it's actually built needs to be torn down ASAP, but I don't actually understand why shadows are such a big deal?

Dan Diamond@ddiamond.bsky.social

President Trump wants to build a 250-foot-tall arch. If completed, it will cast shadows on many graves and monuments in nearby Arlington National Cemetery, the @washingtonpost.com's 3-D analysis found. On some days, Trump's arch would even shade the grave and eternal flame of JFK.

Meanwhile Erika Hilton, a congresswoman in Lula’s party, has called on the Federal Police to investigate acts of violence committed by Bolsonaro supporters during the election (including the fatal attack by seven men on Marcelo de Oliveira Rocha, a Lula supporter they were filmed beating to death).

Flávio Bolsonaro had his passport confiscated by the Brazilian fed police as his brother Eduardo told him to flee to the US. He is tied to paramilitary gangs, is being investigated & lost his legislative immunity when he left the Senate to run for president. paydayreport.com/brazilian-fe...

Tbh, this is a great illustration of why we shouldn't take Anthropic's moral claims seriously, even if they're sincerely held. Becoming wealthy and powerful warps your beliefs, bending them towards justifying and expanding that wealth and power, no matter how well-intentioned you were at the start.

Mother Jones@motherjones.com

When Anthropic was created, its co-founders pledged to commit 80% of their personal equity holdings in the company to philanthropic causes. As they prepare to take the company public, they appear to be walking back that pledge.

Just a reminder that there is no good data to support these uses in K12, we are just testing it live all on kids who won’t ever be these ages again and can’t get them back if we fuck it up.

"AI can draft an essay for you, especially if you give it a high quality prompt." Really? This is what MIT thinks high schoolers should learn? MIT's "Day of AI" dayofai.org provides materials for K-12 teachers and claims to have reached over 5,000,000 students to date. 1/2

I don't know that there is a definitive line to cross that makes you say, "I live in a police state now" but when masked gunmen can routinely brutalize the public, citizen or immigrant alike, with impunity, you have reached that point.

Agree with all of these except DOS. DOS was good.

My candidates for best improvements in computer UX during my lifetime: - Yanking out a usb drive no longer BSODs - Everything has own connector type -> everything is USB-C - Device drivers install automatically (no CDs/floppys) - No more DOS

This basically verbatim an extremely common talking point on white supremacist websites and publications, has been for years

Walter was more than Chekov. He was a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend. To the fans who loved him for so many years, thank you. He loved you too. Rest well, my dear friend. Keep navigating a steady course. – George

Morbid thought, but it's wild that the guy who started playing Chekhov as a young man in 1966 outlived the guy who started playing Chekhov as a young man in 2009
