I speculate that the reason period, and not cohort, effects played the major role in changes in prose and poetry lies in the salience of forms: while topics are relatively hard to observe, prose and poetry can be identified quickly, which makes them easy to encounter repeatedly and to imitate.

In contrast to recent studies on topical change, I find little evidence that prose and poetry dynamics were driven by cohort replacement. Instead, I attribute the observed literary shift primarily to period effects.
