Yesterday: got to my office at 8:30 & began a task. Then talked on zoom to person 1. Returned to task. Person 2 came to talk. Returned to task. Person 3 had an appt to talk. Lunch, & talked with persons 4-7, especially p6. Returned to office & original task. Person 8 came to talk; 9 joined us. 1/2

Finished task 7.5 hrs after starting it. Home, read, cook, eat, get on zoom for meetings w #10-15. Talk to husband (#16), who shows me Old Glory Robot Insurance ad to soothe me, because Sam Watterson trying to keep a straight face is beautiful. Shower, sleep. Tuesday is my light day. #academicsky

Maybe Lowe's (pronounced Lowe's in our house due to a kid) should stock ibuprofen next to the paint brushes for people who think, hey, the bathroom is the smallest room in the house! We can knock this out in a weekend! (Tomorrow is day 4).

Don't schedule medical tests for 24 December. Skip work & deal with that nonsense on a different day. (This is the 2nd year in a row I've spent the day like this).

I dreamed I was presenting a conference paper on "syllabi as reconciling documents" & if anyone can tell me what I might have meant by that, I'd be grateful. #academicsky

Today, a student told me she's really getting into Toni Morrison's Paradise, & she would never have picked up this book if she hadn't been in this class. So it was a good day.

Back to school faculty meeting: the provost gives out 3 faculty awards & 1 staff award. Wanna guess the gender of the faculty who won prizes and the gender of the person who won the staff prize?

Arlen has better bike infrastructure than Fayetteville NC, & Fayetteville is real. We'll, kind of real. It's not like we've got decent bike infrastructure or anything.

My husband called a movie "cringe," & the 19yo says, "Cringe is dead." 23yo agrees- it's judgemental. 19yo explains: "Let people enjoy their silly little things. Let them have joy in their lives." The kids are all right.

Rural & indigenous stations get a larger percentage of their operating costs from CPB/NPR, & do a lot of community connections, covering local events & events. They need our help! Donate! Buy a cool shirt or mug! 1/7

I'm a faculty rep for a BOT committee. At today's meeting, we talked about how international students are afraid to come here, & measles. What a world.

Watching LAD vs NYY & they keep running the catfishing Nana mattress commercial. It's disturbing in & of itself, but is made moreso by the fact that I used to play in a church handball choir with the actress.

My son is helping me clean the laundry room. Like, I moved the washer & dryer & he's back there clearing out junk & sweeping & mopping on the (absolutely true) premise that he's skinnier than I am.

My mother lives in a crappy town in AZ; today, she said she had been feeling sick lately. I asked why & got the long story of how she went to drop off some donations at church and was shot at while defending some kinds who were running from their mom's horrible boyfriend. The thing is, I know 1/2

she's armed. There's a gun under the seat of her truck, I'm certain of it. She's reasonably freaked out by this experience, & I'm grateful that she's ok, but also that she didn't try to shoot back. "84 yo in shootout in church parking lot" is not a headline I need to read.

I have a student who apparently makes her living doing "Get Ready With Me" TikTok videos, so she did one for her final project, in which she did her makeup & discussed the class, which she summed up: "10/10; would emotionally spiral again." I might put this in my annual review & on my faculty page.

Today I taught a Ukrainian English teacher the phrase "play Devil's advocate." This is the second most exciting thing I've done this week. The most exciting? I came home on Monday w a migraine coming on, so I switched dinner nights with my husband, took a shower, took medicine, & slept for 11 hours.

"we''ll make the deal for them" trump fundamentally conceives as every interaction as a variant on rape, exhibit #1239878927891237891230789413

Trump: "Everybody wants to make a deal. And if they don't want to make a deal, we'll make the deal for them. Because that's what's going to happen. We'll just say, 'this is what it is.'"

Help me keep track of detained academics! Khalil, Suri, Ozturk, Alaweih, Taylor, Doroudi, Kordia, Chung, Srinivasan, Petroleum, Gunaydin. Who am I missing, #academicsky ?

I have plans for this big storm we're expecting. The wind should blow hard, first, to knock down all the pollen; then a whole bunch of rain to wash it all away.

Syllabus planning for classes in Women writers & Global lit-- looking for lots of fiction on living in totalitarian/absolutist societies. Shortish books (200p) preferred. #books #booksky

A shared understanding of the big picture organizing problem we face can help us develop solutions. @jessicacalarco.bsky.social l boiled down the essence of the problem in a very short Bluesky thread: bsky.app/profile/jess... 2/18

Jess Calarco@jessicacalarco.com

The right has united around a rejection of government as the solution to social problems. Which means they can generally agree to block new policies and programs. The left is united in its desire for government solutions. But that means they have to face the harder task of agreeing on what to do. 1/

When my aunt died, about 8 years ago, I inherited her Dodgers paraphernalia & some of her scarves. I wore one yesterday & it still smells of her perfume. (I want to say Halston?)

I wore this shirt to the grocery store today & a black lady chased me down in the parking lot to give a hug & then rant about "the orange man."

I'm a little late to getting my s* together here, but I'm starting a daily practice of calling my Senators & Rep. I'm going with "I'd like to know his position on X" -- is there anybody on Bsky set up to give daily suggestions regarding what to ask our congresspeople about?

This week's privilege in action: we have to do a "shark tank" presentation if we want to teach a new gen ed class. I was super organized, ppt, outline, lo's, whole shebang. The older white man who's buds with the dean rambled for 7 minutes about his commute. I was told, well, he thinks this is...

Dumb. No kidding! But I still have to pretend I take the dean's nonsense seriously if I want a snowball's chance. You have to be twice as good to be thought half as skilled. (Just let us submit a print proposal w/o the beauty pageant).
