Mandatory voting in Brazil helped too I think.

Charlie Angus@charlieangus104.bsky.social

The people organized and came out to defeat the far right in Brazil. This election is an incredible example of how grassroots democratic action can beat the oligarchs, the tech bros and the far right. I love the Swifties for Lula youth contingent.

Tonight Students Saved Democracy in Serbia. 🇷🇸 They won the election. The Student List movement unites youth, academics, and civic voices across Serbia. Grounded in anti-corruption reforms, democratic integrity, transparent governance, this movement brings hope to many. Vučić conceded defeat!

I’m glad that Lula won for a lot of reasons but selfishly it kinda confirms that “swagless son of a fascist freak” will probably be a losing ticket when Trump dies and if the boys make a go for it.

It would be wonderful if people adopted this kind of long-term framing to evaluate all governments' climate and energy policies.

Lula’s win is the first good news for the planet in a while! I bet it shaves a tenth of a degree off how hot our earth eventually gets, which will save millions of lives Thank you Brazil!

WOOOHOOOO!! Serbia, now Brazil. Next? USA and Israel!

Lula has been reelected president, Brazilian media has now called. An extraordinary comeback for the left-wing politician who trailed by 2 points in round 1 but managed to hold off Flávio Bolsonaro, the former president's son.

Probably would not have happened if wasn't mandatory voting in Brazil. A lesson perhaps for democracies everywhere.

🚨BREAKING: Brazil's President Lula, a vocal critic of Donald Trump, was reelected Sunday in a result that provides relief to critics of Trump and keeps some distance between Latin America's biggest economy and Washington.

Also worth checking out how that Conservative govt under Simon Tolmie did in 1928-33. Check out austere Depression era recomendations of 1932 Kidd Report. Tolmie lost in a landslide in 1933.

Max Fawcett@maxfawcett.bsky.social

It would be nice if news headlines/reports stopped saying “BC Conservatives win first majority in a century” when the BC Liberals and Socreds won plenty of majorities and were, you know, conservative.

kdodd27.bsky.social reposted

The perennial game of pin the ideology on the BC party BC has been governed by centre-right and right coalitions for most of its colonial past and present In last 10 yrs, political spectrum has shifted right. The BCNDP shifted right. Greens moved left. Fringe parties went hard right

It is worth reading about the Tolmie BC govt of 1928-33. Especially a 1932 Depression era commission called the Kidd Report. There is good reason no Conservative govt elected again. Until now.

I remain surprised that Trump’s social media attention never once flitted to Alberta’s unity referendum

Eby's folly.

Justin McElroy 🇨🇦@jmcelroy.bsky.social

The Conservatives projected enough normalcy to the public. NDP voter enthusiasm collapsed. And David Eby made a decision that will be derided for decades. Here's my post-election column. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Honest elections are something we take for granted as a given. Nice to see in B.C.. That it is still happening. Meanwhile in the U.S. voting machines are gamed, mail ballots lost. As it appears is democracy.

Ballots cast on election day in B.C. will be counted by hand, Elections BC says nationalnewswatch.com/2026/10/23/b...

Take Trump seriously when he threatens to jail election officials for doing the job they’re sworn to do: counting votes. “We are not on the precipice of a constitutional crisis,” Marc Elias says. “We have reached it.” They’re betting you’ll stop paying attention. Follow us to prove them wrong.

Because he plans to do it legal or not. Anything to keep power.

Marie 🇨🇦@pawbaby2.bsky.social

🚨 This should alarm EVERY American! Just 12 days before the midterms, Trump’s Attorney General Todd Blanche REFUSES to rule out DOJ interference in states certifying election results! The federal government has NO authority over state certification. Why won’t he simply rule it out? #USDemocracy

In Canada, voters in Alberta overwhelmingly rejected a referendum that would have put the province on a path toward independence. It's a win for Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who has pushed for national cohesion amid ongoing trade tensions with the United States.

Larry Ellison went on a borrowing spree to help pay for his son's Warner Bros. bid, using shares in Oracle, Tesla and SpaceX as collateral. The move highlights how billionaires often employ a strategy called “buy, borrow and die” to retain their wealth without selling assets.

130 million on a referendum. That could've paid for 150 family doctors. Or 188 teachers. Or two brand-new schools. Instead, the UCP printed 45 million ballots. Imagine if they governed for Albertans instead. This referendum was held to appease the 25% which it didn't. #abpoli #ableg #UCP #Alberta

It is refreshing to see the two teams with the best records over 162 games actually meet in the World Series. Also, two teams which have never won it.

Top team in the AL vs top team in the NL is excessively cool, and is somewhat rare in baseball history. Throw in a fanbase guaranteed to have their first win ever, and TB starting 2 ex-MIL SP, and the World Series is going to be kind of a real blast. www.mlb.com/news/mlb-wor...

Yes! Obvious corruption is not being properly handled, swept far more than less under the rug. Why, needs to be addressed.

A scandal built on their many scandals. After the election there needs to be a reckoning. The left is in disgrace for letting this go. The right too but one doesn’t expect much on crime from that side.

I think they have a very strong sense of "self-preservation". But it has nothing to do with democracy + everything to do with retaining power no matter what.

John Michael McGrath@jm-mcgrath.bsky.social

A big question is going to be "do Republicans in Congress have any sense of self-preservation, or even self-respect" after November and it's a genuine shame that we don't know the answer
