I’m truly happy to see some wins around the globe. When people protest and fight back, we actually win. Lula’s victory im Brazil and the victory of the student-led movement in Serbia give me at least some hope. People are prevailing in places around the world.

Here it is

lastweekinhell.substack.comWhy I’m Voting “Yes” on Portland’s Participatory Budgeting MeasureAfter pushback on the measure, I feel it’s important to provide an alternative perspective

I am planning to vote “yes” on Your Two Cents (Measure 26-267). If you’re voting in Portland this weekend and want my perspective on it, I’m hoping to release an article on my reasoning either late tonight or early tomorrow. Everyone should come to their conclusions, but I generally believe in this.

A video of police in Paris shows them brutally kicking, batoning, shield bashing, kneeing, and beating a protester as they drag them, pulling their shirt over their head so they can’t see, to police vans, where officers proceed to hold the individual as others beat them more with batons and strikes.

This is lethal force. You could kill someone doing this. No one in my life has made me feel less safe than a police officer. Law enforcement exist to beat the masses for demanding decency and dignity. And it happens all over the world.

Josh Turek of Iowa, Democrat, comes out with one of the worst anti-trans ads yet. Not only is it an anti-sports ad, it proposes a ban on federal funding for gender affirming care. That would hit all medicaid and medicare patients, and any ACA federally-subsidized plans as well. Horrific.

Here’s a VERY brief summary of my thoughts: - I believe democratizing the budget is worth pushing for - I find arguments about lobbyist influence overblown given the current budget process - I’m less worried about where the money comes from - Evidence seems to suggest it works around the world

This week I’ve been called an influencer, a podcaster, and a journalist at large.

Aside from the small handful of outlets with major reach, it really feels like reporters have to be influencers first and reporters second in order to actually gain any traction Probably not great for society when we all expect to be entertained before we're willing to listen/read and get informed

One of my greatest disappointments since living in Portland is that not once has anyone ever knocked on my door for trick-or-treating 😭 I've always wanted to be the cool adult with the full size candy bars 😔 That's why I make up for it with lots of candy and treats in my City Hall office 🍬🍿🍫🥨🙃🤭

Julia Brim-Edwards definitely does not fit the “pro-labor progressive labor” label some of her billboards would suggest. Singleton is the only person who seems like she might fit that description in the chair race.

Alex Zielinski@alexzee.bsky.social

A lil news: AFSCME Local 88, the largest union representing Multnomah County employees, has rescinded its endorsement of Julia Brim-Edwards for county chair. This comes a week after @basicrightsoregon.bsky.social reversed its endorsement.

A mini investigation into the surveillance pricing ban making its way through Portland City Council. The ordinance is scheduled for a first reading before the full council on November 4.

If the final Moda deal ends up anywhere close to this, any councilor who votes yes cannot be trusted with basic budgeting and economics. I’d argue that’s pretty much already the case for those that were ready to roll over from the jump, but this is insane.

Negotiations between Trail Blazers owner Tom Dundon and Portland officials have stalled over a $1 billion settlement demand tied to the team's first-class arena maintenance clause, with Dundon pushing for a 10-year buyout option rather than the required 20-year lease commitment. https://mrf.lu/2bWJc

As a non-candidate I've been asked if I disavow Hasan Piker and if I condemn Mitch's tweets. Not sure I've ever seen any of the conservatives asked at a public event if they disavow / condemn anyone yet.

Key takeaways from the Portland City Council immigration town hall: 1) 3/6 incumbents showed. Novick, Clark, and Zimmerman were not present. 2) No one said they felt Mayor Wilson had done a good job in standing up to Trump or fighting for immigrants. Evenstar had one of the best lines. She said…

Progressive incumbents continued to highlight land use challenges and the mayor not cooperating with them. 4) There are LOTS of things the city could do to try and help immigrants. Green said ban auto license plate readers and provide grocery services so immigrants can avoid ICE at stores.

Evenstar wants refuge spaces for immigrants in public buildings + train staff to help. 5) There was palpable frustration with Portland Police and DA Vasquez—less so from Arnold, but he said he supports accountability. 6) General vibe was “we need a 7th progressive vote to make this stuff happen.”

Wilson should have had the cops face the right direction, i.e. not at the protesters. Morillo pointed heavily to having to push the mayor to enforce the impact fee. 3) Esther León and Jeremey Beausoleil Smith took the strongest stances on shutting down the Macadam ICE building…

So happy to get to contribute to one of these amazing podcasts. Also very happy that my detailed episodes on how Congress wants to bring ICE to grocery stores has more downloads than the Macklemore one.

I also wanted to pull out a special part of the piece: fuck Jensen Huang. By forcing customers to take early delivery of GPUs to boost quarterly revenues, he artificially inflated the price of RAM and every consumer electronic. What he and his hyperscale paypigs have done is morally reprehensible.
