Was walking past this building and through the window saw this backrooms-ass room, so I accidentally took the coolest picture ever due to the window's reflection

16 years ago, the hit BBC show Sherlock spurred a mind palace boom. But now, that bubble has burst and over 80% of the mind palaces on the market remain so for over 5 years while the rest are abandoned completely.

Today I learnt that the H2G2 theme (as of the radio play, at least) is actually an Eagles song called *Journey of the Sorcerer*.

See, this is why working in tech is so wearying. Silicon Valley venture capital has done almost nothing *but* invest in scams for at least a decade, to the extent that “Start up a business that will sustainably provide a profitable service” is a wild, unsubstantiated fantasy!

Reggie Pole@reggiepole.bsky.social

But isn't this every start up ever? Was Uber a scam because they could never keep prices that low forever?

One of the bone-wearyingly aggravating features of our present moment is how many people I now have to distrust the technical judgement of because they're all-in on this thing being breathlessly hyped by*the exact same people* who hyped “blockchain”, NFTs and the “metaverse”.

This statement is based on the CTO of Mozilla (an AI company by now). This deep analysis goes through the Mythos docs available and shows that that model is really not a bit advancement at all https://www.flyingpenguin.com/the-boy-that-cried-mythos-verification-is-collapsing-trust-in-anthropic/

I mean, there are things of value you can do with this technology¹! Why can you only talk about it like you've invented God! ¹: they might not be worth the costs, but there *are* some things they're helpful with.

My faviourite part of graphics programming is when you religiously check for errors, get none, and then the driver deadlocks in glFinish().

This is a 100% game breaker for my enjoyment of RPGs, and it is *remarkable* how many otherwise excellent games it renders unplayable for me.

Person: this is a very important and time-critical task. it needs to be done as soon as humanly possible Me, wise to video game design: I understand, it will be the last thing on my list to do, once I have exhausted literally every other available option, either implied or explicit

<My band of adventurers, having infiltrated the castle, enter the throne room> Sir, were you aware a horde of undead had taken residence in your dungeon?

For my sins, I want to make some changes to how Ubuntu packages build, which means I'm poking around `debhelper`, which means I'm interacting with Perl, and woah, boy, is that not a task for being tired and bored in an airport lounge.

“You should be able to talk to your PC, have it understand you, and then be able to have magic happen from that,” says Mehdi. Yeah, the problem in one simple advertising-speak package, isn't it. No one actually *wants* magic - capricious, dangerous - they want *technology* - reliable, dependable.

nilay patel@reckless.bsky.social

AI people keep showing up in my mentions to argue that I am not using their specific narrow definition of AI agents while the industry keeps promising magic computers that can listen and take consistent, reliable actions on arbitrary voice commands www.theverge.com/news/799768/...

Even detaching this from the “state monopoly on violence” frame, “policing” is a task that *needs to be done* in a community of any size - community norms need to be enforced. In online communities, we often call this “moderation” rather than policing, but that is the task.

William B. Fuckley@opinionhaver.bsky.social

“Agent of the government empowered to use violence in its name to enforce its laws” is a pretty old invention, actually. This is what I’m talking about, this is just like magical thinking: you need *someone* to maintain and exercise the state’s monopoly on force. It’s literally unavoidable, sorry!

And online communities of any size and maturity tend to mirror the structure of the state legal system - you have a formal group of community members tasked with investigation of breaches of norms and delegated powers to enforce consequences, often with a semi-court-like investigative process.

“the police being only members of the public who are paid to give full-time attention to duties which are incumbent on every citizen in the interests of community welfare and existence” is a solid philosophical foundation for the establishment of a public police force.

My political take is that this is the ur-issue that left-wing politics in (at least) the Anglozone needs to deal with, the single biggest blocker to political success: lots of people have an experience of the world that is barely connected to their objective material conditions.

adonis (and cait)@cait.bsky.social

this is an embarrassing thing for this guy to say in public but also touches on something that constantly rankles me, which is the vague idea of "feeling unsafe" as a problem that someone else needs to solve for you regardless of whether you are actually unsafe or not

A great example here is crime - crime of all kinds is at historic lows, but “what are you going to do about skyrocketing crime” is one of the most salient political issues. This is a real policy issue! People *should* feel safe! It's just not an issue that can be solved by policing.

Voted early this year as I'm travelling tomorrow. First time I could vote above the line in the Senate, because I didn't have to put that POS Eric Abetz last.

This may well be the most perfectly targetted sequence of words possible to engage my interest.

Dominic Tarason@dominictarason.com

Wrote a bit about Heart of the Machine which should be up on PC Gamer soonish, but I'll need MANY more hours sunk into this just to get a feel for its limits. Arcen Games (primarily Chris Park, galaxy-brain dev) have always aimed high, but this might be their Dwarf Fortress/Caves of Qud opus.

Banks have entire departments dedicated to remediation because errors will always be made. Not being able to fix those errors is a crazy idea for a financial system

This skeet brought to you by: “Why, no! I am not actually building the code I was testing”, and “Ah, yes! The test code needs to actually submit the request before the server is going to do any processing”.
