👋 @mayor.nyc.gov - would it also be possible to cut red tape toward effectively reporting vendors who break various rules, such as this van trying to drive through a crowded sidewalk? NYPD observed this and said “no one was endangered”

Halalflation update: 1,800 mobile food vending license applications in the mail this week, our biggest batch ever.
Less red tape, more white sauce.

If NYC is serious about increasing street vending in a way that minimizes QOL issues, they are going to have take parking away from personal cars and allocate space. Otherwise you just end up with this van/Explorer set (both belong to the cart), permanently blocking the hydrant & loading zone

As a bonus if the city could stop storing superfluous vehicles in loading zones. This buildings? van moves like once a week best I can tell. Has an orange box tho

More loading zones!

I have no idea how many licenses there should be—perhaps a lot more! And my main concern is wrt street vendors is negative externalities and safety issues due to their car dependence.

Extract from my email to @cmcrystalhudson.bsky.social ‘s office today regarding NYPD refusal to stop a van driving through a crowded sidewalk

Jehiah@jehiah.cz

The way it’s passed over how corrupt enforcement is makes me mad. Either enforcement is impartial and you ticket cars parked illegally - every last one of them - or you have no business leading an enforcement agency.

Note it is assumed by default road space between a travel lane and the curb is “parking” and any other use “taking up parking”

Jehiah@jehiah.cz

Upset about Amazon trucks parked all day unloading? If I had a dollar for every council member that is but can't see that a "taking up parking" concern is just another indication that we need fewer cars in NYC. Micro-delivery is a much better use of the curb than personal car storage.

EAGLE teams but for placard abuse

. @mta.info employees parked in Access-a-ride stop at Brooklyn Museum. Not sure if I can report to NYPD since it’s on museum property

How does Mike feel about TWU workers obstructing paratransit at a polling site?

Sam@samd.bsky.social

TWU be like “Hochul is MAGA because she doesn’t support our MAGA union” in reality, they’re just mad at Hochul because she refused to expand the union’s expensive handouts and make-work jobs funded with taxpayer $$

"Under Brazilian federal law, all legislators have immunity...To run for President, Bolsonaro decided not to run for his Senate seat. Now, after losing the Presidential election, he no longer has legislative immunity when his Senate term expires in January 2027." Very Special Episode of no amnesty

Ideal for @governor.ny.gov @mayor.nyc.gov to address the pervasive problem of sidewalk driving and parking including at today’s polling site—install a device to automatically disable recidivist vehicles like this one when they mount the curb, similar to speed limiters

cosybike@cosybikeglasgow.bsky.social

They have plenty tracking and kinetic event recording equipment on board. Think it can detect kerb mounting. Whether they do anything about it...?

same, I confess

If James Talarico loses next month blame it all on me. I live in New York and have nothing to do with Texas, but I have ignored his what I estimate is approximately 433 texts asking me for money. So.

Furthermore the same detail was present on a previous occasion when the same vendor (Dumpling Spot) reversed into a crosswalk filled with pedestrians including several children. And that truck has numerous school/red light violations

Hotels are getting harder to defend also these days. But yeah basically whatever advantage AirBnB offered is now gone—skirting regulation doesn’t offset costs enough to make up for losing economies of scale

Santiago Mayer@santiagomayer.com

I’ve never understood the appeal of Airbnb. Why would I pay $250/night + a $200 cleaning bill to stay at a rando’s house and deal with their crazy rules when I can stay at a Holiday Inn with breakfast included for $150???

Hope I didn’t screw things up by early voting

Kevin@reginageorgebush.bsky.social

everyone seems to be betting that the early vote will get redder towards the end. this reminds me very much of people in 2026 NYC betting that the early vote and then election day would get older and more conservative. (it did not do that.)

Growing up our west I recall seeing bike paths in small towns (including one along Lamoille Hwy) well before you really saw urban bike lanes. However they were always viewed as recreational. The socially acceptable way to commute where I’m from is drive 3 miles and get on a mine bus.

I don’t have a problem with this text per se I do have a problem with the barrage of unsolicited spam esp once you register. The candidates’ campaigns already have my address and have sent mail. @actblueorg.bsky.social even sent texts addressed to my sister-in-law, which basically proves data mining

While we are making tangible if painfully incremental progress towards speeding, red light , bus lane obstruction etc sidewalk driving/parking feels like it’s not even on the radar. If you report a specific location enough things will improve but there’s no systematic (or durable) solution

Peter W.@kinographer.bsky.social

This happened in front of @nypdnews.bsky.social 311-29449233. Officer explained the guy is trying to run a business. Eventually (after the van departed) he conceded he would tell them to stop. But this should be an automatic summons

Alas @nypdnews.bsky.social did not get a chance to talk to the driver. Here he is at pick up causing chaos, for cars, bikes and pedestrians alike. This truck has many school zone and red light violations btw. But NYPD says he’s not endangering people 311-29452903

This is probably true.

i mean more "php, the runtime written in c" more than i do "php the language" but there is truth shared across them in this context, php the runtime is having to have a significant re-architecture to avoid a specific class of memory issue, and i don't think that's a big as outlier as implied

Good. Can we also audit if the city needs all of its vehicles and equip Parks with more appropriate alternatives than F-350s? This van stored on Washington in metered parking/loading seems like a candidate for auction

Exclusive: The Mamdani administration says it will dramatically expand an effort by his predecessor to install speed governors inside city-owned vehicles, rising from 1,000 today to 3,000, preventing drivers from exceeding the speed limit. buff.ly/kBp8XG2

It's crazy how often you hear about "bikes on the sidewalk" when this is the actual reality in NYC

Additionally I think a lot of left/prog activism, while important, has focused on criminal justice reform, which is often effectively spun as soft on crime. IMO accountability/oversight will be harder to sabotage (not impossible)

Saying that I think Mamdani can’t fire Tisch but increasingly he can’t keep her either unless she is prepared to take on these problems and bear the political cost. However finding a PC who will bear the cost…

Basically focus on Tisch is a red herring and replacing her wouldn’t magically fix things. As we’ve seen with EAGLE teams, even moving to a whole other agency may not fundamentally change much.

Speaking of police accountability or lack thereof, here is the response I got from IAB Records when I asked why I was never contacted about 2026-22780. And they will only tell you a case was closed, not the disposition or anything else. You can’t meaningfully call this accountability @mayor.nyc.gov

Is it okay to be on X solely to yell at agencies and officials? Unfortunately I find complaints get more traction there than on here (or more civilized methods like a phone call)
