I'm ready to say it. Arber Xhekaj has arrived. He's an NHL defender. You can't take it from him anymore. Xhekaj's biggest issue this season has been his partner. When he has a top quality partner like tonight, he's absolutely rock solid.

A negative 1.85 for Dobes tonight in GSAE. He is minus 5.86 so far this season. That is 62nd of 64 goalies who have seen action this season.

Dobes is still overcommitting right now. He's exaggerated in all his movements. All season he's been doing this. Needs to calm himself and his movements

Canadiens vs. Sabres Top Six Minutes: #Habs #GoHabsGo #MontrealCanadiens

dlvr.itCanadiens vs. Sabres Top Six Minutes:First period * Nick Suzuki gets the game’s first scoring chance as the puck slides over to him on the wing. He lines up a shot for the top corner, but it catches on Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen’s jersey and deflects over the net. * Buffalo’s first scoring chance comes a few seconds after an Adam EngstrΓΆm turnover in his own zone, with a second error coming as the point shot deflects in off his at the side of the net to give the Sabres an early lead. A shift can’t get much worse than that. * A linesman is injured as he gets his ankle rolled on after a faceoff in the Sabres’ zone, and that looked very painful. The game will now be officiated by a crew of three. * Another difficult shift for EngstrΓΆm as his stretch pass is picked off in the neutral zone and the Sabres turn it into a rush chance. Montreal might be playing the rest of the game with five defencemen. * One Hab goes off, two jump on, and that equals four skaters for the next two minutes. * The Sabres racked up several shots on the power play. Montreal’s penalty kill looks fine when teams quarterback from the point, but when they play low in the zone like the Sabres, it’s a bit of a scramble. * Josh Anderson anticipates a pass along the blue line and races up to intercept it, creating a two-on-zero with Chris Kreider. The chance they get is a one-time return feed to Anderson, but Luukkonen’s makes a spectacular save. * Juraj SlafkovskΓ½ gets tripped on the next shift, and the Canadiens go to the power play. * The Sabres are a bit tired after chasing the top unit for a minute, and Louis Crevier backhands the puck over the glass on the far side. * Martin St-Louis uses his timeout, hopefully to remind everyone to shoot the puck on this five-on-three. * The setup is an attempted cross-crease feed from Suzuki to SlafkovskΓ½, but it gets spoiled by a Sabres defenceman and held. * Hutson stays on the ice and fires through a Phillip Danault screen to even the game before Buffalo’s first penalty expires. * The rest of the power play is turns into a brief period of four-on-four and Kirby Dach latches onto Zach Benson in transition. * Anderson again shows excellent anticipation on the penalty kill to hold the line and send Alex Newhook away. Newhook forces Luukkonen into another stop on the rush. * Aside from the rough EngstrΓΆm shift and the down-low defending on the penalty kill, that was a good period from Montreal. Anderson has been particularly impressive with his assertive approach tonight. Second period * The Canadiens get three chances in the midst of a change from Danault’s line to Suzuki’s. * With the top line all on the ice, Cole Caufield hands the puck to SlafkovskΓ½ for the zone entry, then races down the left wing to present himself as a passing option, and blasts a one-timer to put Montreal on top. * Kreider attempts to keep the momentum going deep in the zone, but ends up holding onto Crevier’s stick in the process, and now the Habs are back on the penalty kill. * For whatever reason, the Sabres decided to try to run this power play from the point, and Jake Evans, Newhook, and Anderson ate them alive. * The Sabres get another power play as Newhook taps Olen Zellweger’s glove on an entry. * A couple nice clearing decisions from Arber Xhekaj see out most of the latest kill. * The puck comes out over the Sabres’ blue line and SlafkovskΓ½ decides to touch it on the delayed offside and sends the puck deep into his own zone on the intentional call. The Habs are getting in their own way tonight. The game isn’t particularly close in terms of play, but Montreal is holding Buffalo in it. Even so, the Sabres have mustered eight shots despite four power plays. * Dobson takes a puck in the mouth as he recovers to the front of the net, and heads to the dress room for a dental checkup. * The Danault line creates some havoc in the offensive zone and draws a third power play for the Canadiens. * Suzuki fans on a shot and it ends up going through to Caufield, who catches Luukkonen a bit off-guard, but not enough to solve him. * The power-play goal seems to have gone to their head, and they spent those two minutes trying fancy backhand flip passes and blind rims. * EngstrΓΆm makes a great defensive play after a transition rush turned into a developing two-on-one. He got back just in time to deflect the pass away. * The Danault line again works to create a goal. A clearance from Buffalo is quickly whipped back in the zone by the centreman, and Hutson seals the wall at the point to prevent the clear. Hutson walks into the slot, and just as the Sabres think he’s close enough to fire a shot he slings it across to Anderson, who rips in the 3-1 goal. * Montreal outshoots the Sabres 12-2 in the frame and outscores them 2-0. By far the best second period of the season to date. * Now how do they handle playing with a two-goal lead? Third period * Dobson is back on the bench for the third. No cage or bubble, so he seems okay. * The Sabres whiff on a golden chance, and then Texier gets launched on a partial break. Luukkonen makes his 20th stop, and a lot of them have been difficult saves. * Buffalo gets a second goal from a shot that deflects off EngstrΓΆm. * And a third one on the next shift deflected off SlafkovskΓ½ and then maybe Hutson as well. Forty minutes of excellent hockey thrown away in a matter of seconds because they simply refuse to play the same way when up a couple of goals. * Suzuki’s line comes out trying to match the push the Sabres have made and come close to scoring on three occasions. Again, Luukkonen does just enough to deflect the puck away from the net. * Anderson and Krebs get into a joust at centre ice, and the next two minutes will be played at four-on-four. * Texier launches Montreal’s 30th shot off the wing, but it’s one of the easier stops Luukkonen has had to make. * The Canadiens are back in control now. If only they hadn’t given it up they might be on their way to a comfortable win right now. * The ghost of Mike Matheson possesses Dobson for a minute as he launches a shot into shin pads with two minutes remaining to set up a two-on-one for the Sabres, but Fowler makes the stop on the non-deflected shot that results. * Danault gets set up right in the crease by Newhook from the corner, buy Luukkonen leaves no room for the puck to sneak in. * The horn sounds. The Canadiens get a point, but they also allowed the Sabres to get one. Now the Habs need the overtime-winner to salvage this outing. Overtime * Dobson spins away from a check on a one-on-one to sling a backhand on goal for the first shot of overtime. * Zachary Bolduc gets stopped on a breakaway, and Suzuki as well on the follow-up. * The Sabres had one possession, a shot that missed, in the opening four-and-a-half minutes as the Habs piled up chances. * But the threat of a break the other way forces SlafkovskΓ½ to grab onto Josh Norris, and the Sabres will finish this game on the power play. * Evans incubates the puck along the wall to take half the remaining time off the clock. * And his block off the next faceoff sees out the end of overtime. He helps Montreal go five-for-five on the night. Five power plays and 17 total shots for Buffalo through 65 minutes. Shootout * Caufield comes in slow, handles the puck a bit looking for a spot, and finds it high blocker side. * Tage Thompson comes in and evens the score with a shot glove-side on Fowler. * Texier rips a shot past Luukkonen, and the Habs once again hold the advantage. * Jack Quinn tries to pull the puck to his backhand, but Fowler spoils it with a pokecheck. * Bolduc comes in with speed and forces Luukkonen to retreat quickly. He can’t drop fast enough when Bolduc lets the puck slip five-hole, and the Canadiens will get the second point. * Montreal gets the win, though they may regret not wrapping this game up in regulation. They’ll hit the road to play in Washington tomorrow night. EOTP 3 Stars 3) We’ll never get tired of those moves 2) Where would they be without that line? 1) The three-man crew was too tired for the extra work

Canadiens vs. Red Wings Top Six Minutes: Jacob Fowler goes six-for-six in the shootout #Habs #GoHabsGo #MontrealCanadiens

dlvr.itCanadiens vs. Red Wings Top Six Minutes: Jacob Fowler goes six-for-six in the shootoutMontreal Canadiens news and notes * As a chant of β€œWe want Larkin!” ring out in the Bell Centre, Noah Dobson makes a great play backtracking on potential breakaway to get the crowd cheering for one its one players. * The cheers get louder a bit later when Cole Caufield fires a shot from just above the goal line that finds a hole in Daniil Tarasov. * Not a big enough hole apparently because none of the reviews show the puck over the line, so they overturn the call on the absence of any evidence. Not sure how that works, honestly. * Alexandre Texier gets interfered with by Lucas Raymond and the Canadiens will test the league’s worst penalty kill. * A couple of good looks, but not much in terms of shots. * They maintain the momentum after the penalty. It’s another great start to a period when the Canadiens completely outclass their opponent. * Zachary Bolduc fires a shot that glances off Tarasov’s shoulder, then the crossbar, and out. But it’s great that he’s shooting whenever he has the puck near the net. * Despite the game between played almost exclusively on Detroit’s half of the ice, the Red Wings get the first power play of the game as Kirby Dach is called for hooking. * Evans clears a bouncing puck over the glass, and there will be 27 seconds of five-on-three time for the Red Wings. * Jacob Fowler makes several saves on cross-ice plays that would have looked more impressive if his positioning weren’t so good, and the Canadiens deal with the penalties. * Montreal is playing a lot in Detroit’s zone, but having trouble finding the passes they want through Detroit’s slot protection. * Shots end up 11-9 Detroit after they were 7-1 Montreal in the first half of the frame, so the Habs again couldn’t carry their play for a full period. Second period * A quick chance for the Red Wings results in their 12th shot of the game. The Canadiens need to find their form quickly. * After a listless run, Lane Hutson takes things into his own hands and creates two scoring chances on his own. * Zachary Bolduc pokes the puck past Dylan Larkin at the point and grabs his stick to but an extra second as he goes to step past him and play it and gets hooked. It’s a power play. For Detroit. * Bolduc comes out of the penalty box and scores. The goal is immediately waved off because Jake Evans contacted the knob of Tarasov’s stick in the crease. * Texier gets held behind the net, and this will be a Montreal power play. * A more creative power play, but it is taking a bit to long to create each setup. * Kaiden Guhle gets tripped behind his own net, and Montreal is right back on the power play. * Ben Chiarot breaks his stick during the PK, but even versus 3.5 defenders the Canadiens can’t create a shooting lane. * Fowler follows a turnover right in front of him and makes a point-blank blocker stop on Alex DeBrincat. * Evans winds up a shot from well out on the wing and it glances off Tarasov’s arm, off the post, and to the corner. If only they would take more shots on such a shaky goaltender. * Adam EngstrΓΆm follows up a top-line rush with a shot from the slot, but Tarasov makes that stop. * Texier uses his stick like a kayak paddle to prevent Axel Sandin-Pellikka from playing the puck up the wall. A Detroit power play. * Montreal outshot Detroit 11-7 in that period, but they shouldn’t have this much difficulty creating offence with the players they have. We’ll see who takes control in the third period to make a goal happen. Third period * Josh Anderson gets the best chance any player has had tonight to score a goal, but he misses the net. * Andrew Copp gets sent in along, and Fowler makes an excellent pad save by kicking out his leg on the deke. * Better pressure now by Montreal to keep the Red Wings on their heels. The passes are still being blocked, but as long as the volume stays high they’ll miss one eventually. * Dach takes a half-hearted swing at the puck in the slot and takes a second to realize he needs to get back defensively when he misses it. He doesn’t have the necessary engagement level so far this season. * Kreider gets sprung down the left wing for a shot, but Tarasov makes one his calmest stops of the game. * Guhle joins an odd-man rush and has a Bolduc pass coming toward him when he’s hooked by Justin Faulk. Guhle has looked very good, especially considering these are his first minutes of game action since the playoffs. * Now to make this power play count. Detroit seems to be wearing down here in these second game in 24 hours. * Passes, but no shots. On repeat. * Quality forechecking from Texier gets the Habs possession and a shot that leaves the puck sitting at the top of the crease that Danault just can’t get to. That line has looked really good. * The shots end up even after 60 minutes of play, though the five-on-five shot attempts are 50-27 Montreal. Overtime * A fitting end to the game would have been it ending on a two-on-one featuring Texier and Bolduc, with Texier scoring. * But alas, a third Habs goal is taken off the board, this one for offside. That was just a poor job by Bolduc at making sure he was second in. He didn’t drag his foot. * Caufield flies down the defence and across the crease, but he can’t get the shot off he wanted. * Montreal’s 30th shot is from Caufield, but it’s easily stopped by Tarasov. He will get credited with a shutout, as will Fowler. Shootout * Caufield goes first. He’s stopped by Tarasov’s blocker. * Fowler completely closes down the five-hole Fowler was looking for. * Texier tries to score another goal. He beats Tarasov clean but hits the post. * Fowler stops DeBrincat with his blocker. * SlafkovskΓ½ is up to give the Habs a late advantage. He telegraphs a five-hole shot and it’s an easy save. * Arvidsson tries a series of dekes and gets little on the shot. Fowler makes a leg stop and we go to round four. * Suzuki is denies by Tarasov’s glove. Lots of slow-run-up shot attempts. * Larkin gets stopped. Round five. * It’s Hutson’s turn. He goes backhand, but can’t get around it enough to send it on net. * Sandin-Pellikka gets career attempt number one. He’s now 0% in shootouts. * Bolduc swoops in from the wing and snaps a far-side shot under Tarasov’s glove. * Fowler is a save away from his first win of the season. He stops it. All 29 shots in regulation, all six in the shootout. * That’s an important win for Montreal. EOTP 3 Stars 3) And he’s doing it a lot 2) Who needs goals with saves like that? 1) They need a little red zone work

I'm glad I saved $2 by not doing a Habs bet. I was going to take Caufield for a goal and Suzuki for a point. Then I said fuck it, can't trust them to score any goals. I was right for once. πŸ˜‚ #GoHabsGo

Montreal Canadiens trade Jayden Struble to Nashville for second-round pick #Habs #GoHabsGo #MontrealCanadiens

dlvr.itMontreal Canadiens trade Jayden Struble to Nashville for second-round pickThe Montreal Canadiens cleared some of their defensive depth on Friday, trading defender Jayden Struble to the Nashville Predators for a 2027 second-round draft pick. The Canadiens have acquired a 2027 second-round pick from the Nashville Predators in exchange for defenseman Jayden Struble. pic.twitter.com/MeM2DXQLQL— Canadiens Montréal (@CanadiensMTL) October 9, 2026 The draft pick originally belonged to the Vegas Golden Knights. Struble was a healthy scratch on Thursday night against the Predators, as Adam Engstrâm drew into the lineup and played well next to Arber Xhekaj. The 25-year-old was drafted in the second round (46th overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft. He played in three games this season and does not have a point. He has seven goals and 28 assists in 174 career NHL games. He also played in 14 playoff games. This trade likely indicates that Kaiden Guhle is nearing a return, and that the team feels Engstrâm is capable of holding down the fort in the NHL. The Canadiens host the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday as they look to snap a three-game losing streak. Guhle has been practicing with the team since the season started. He was expected to miss four-to-five weeks, which would put him in line to return as soon as next week on that timeline.
