Blame me if you want... but also, seriously do support The Sprawl!!! sprawlcalgary.fundjournalism.org/donate/
Councillors heard "support The Sprawl today" and now we get this.
Just updated this story with a synopsis of the main points ("the short version") at the top. Skim or dig in as you prefer.
HOT OFF THE PRESS! Calgary city council will decide whether to approve 7 new communities in the coming weeks (incl 3 on Tuesday). Meanwhile city hall is bracing for less revenue from suburban developers after new UCP restrictions. I dig into all this and more...

When activist journalism goes.... waaaaaaaay too far. A disgrace.
STORY, updates to come: Edmonton former journalist Duncan Kinney has admitted to spray painting a bust of Ukrainian World War II leader Roman Shukhevych with the words "actual Nazi," then writing about it, claiming he didn't know who did it. edmontonjournal.com/news/crime/d...

Important piece by @sprawlcalgary.bsky.social on the state of pedestrian mobility in Calgary and responsiveness. A deep-dive article is linked below; there's also a complementary Sprawlcast on this topic, released today. Consume, consider both. www.sprawlcalgary.com/calgary-pede...
New Sprawlcast episode out this morning, about pedestrian safety—or lack thereof—in Calgary. (Headline idea from @chealion.ca, who made a bot that tracks and tweets pedestrian incidents in the city)
Will be on CJSW 90.9 FM tomorrow morning chatting with @peterloliver.bsky.social about this story. At 9:15ish. Tune in! 📻

A great read from @klaszus.bsky.social as always. Thank you for writing this! I continue to be dumbfounded by anyone that argues against safer streets after reading the stats in this piece. We know what works, & it's not letting drivers behave recklessly & drive fast.
A decade ago, Calgary city council approved a new pedestrian strategy that aimed to dramatically reduce carnage on city streets by 2025. Instead the opposite happened. We dig into why—and what comes next. #yyccc

Calgary had a record year for pedestrian deaths in 2025. New in The Sprawl, I dig into how our streets got so dangerous after city hall's Vision Zero efforts (or lack thereof).
David Goa, a friend and mentor, interviewed me for the new episode of his podcast, "In Conversation." I interviewed him for MY podcast a few years back (one of my all-time fav Sprawlcast episodes). Now the tables have turned! Enjoy. www.davidgoa.ca/jeremy-klaszus
There is a big new @sprawlcalgary.bsky.social story coming. Was supposed to come out last weekend. Then this morning. Now tomorrow. Can't quite stick the landing on it. But need to get the damn thing out the door. Wait for it!
Also common now: greeting someone in the neighbourhood with a "hello" and getting no response. They can't even hear it. But I guess listening to a bunch of podcasts makes one "smarter"...
When I’m walking down the street, almost half the people walking towards me have their heads bowed. So respectful! 🙃

A chilly, dreary day was made brighter and warmer by attending @sprawlcalgary.bsky.social's printing pop-up to spend time with @klaszus.bsky.social and @calgaryhester.bsky.social along with others, serendipitously, from The Sprawl's readership community. 🇨🇦 Let community lift you, friends.💗

Join us Sat Sept 26 to celebrate The Sprawl's 9th anniversary! At Two Pillars Brewery from 2-4pm. Will have the Pop-Up Press and @calgaryhester.bsky.social will be there to sign prints. Would love to see ya there! 🍻 (there's also good coffee next door if you'd rather do coffee than beer!)
Tomorrow (Thurs Sept 24) I'm moderating a panel at the Central Library on the history of western alienation in Alberta. Killer panel with political scientists Lisa Young @jlisayoung.bsky.social, Lori Williams & Anthony Sayers. You should come!
As The Sprawl begins its 10th year (!) I'm thrilled that we have been named Alberta Magazine of the Year!

“It makes life richer if you can walk down the block and see a place that’s always been there, that previous generations have walked by, that future generations walk by.... You know the place is rooted, and we need roots."
Today we published a tribute to beloved Calgary historian Harry Sanders. “He always had a story about the people that made the place.”

What a tremendous tribute to Harry the Historian. Thanks @klaszus.bsky.social www.sprawlcalgary.com/remembering-...
Harry Sanders was a true mensch who brought Calgary's history to life. I wrote in The Sprawl about what he meant to the city.
In 2019, Harry Sanders wrote for The Sprawl about an old Calgary violin shop that got demolished that year. A lovely elegy capturing a forgotten bit of the city's past. Today I republished it in his honour. (Harry died on Sunday, at the age of 59.)
The writers and artists I respect most don’t deform themselves to reach the widest possible audience as frequently as possible. They dig deeper and in doing so, are able to speak a resonant word into the times in which they live. My latest in The Sprawl.
