Was pleased to hear Alex noting the silence on trans rights from Burnham. @quietriotpod.bsky.social - but what’s actually going on there? Do we have committed anti trans ideologists dictating party/government policy, or are they all just terrified of right wing headlines? If it’s the latter I think

their electoral calculus is off. I’m certain they’d win significantly more support than they’d lose by being progressive on this front. I also think they maybe underestimate the solidarity at play between trans, immigrant, pro Palestine, etc communities. Would love to hear you guys discuss this.

And once again my respect for @marina-purkiss.bsky.social ratchets up another notch. Top tier human being.

Marina Purkiss, "188 articles on this man, Jason Arday, who was not a public figure, over 9 days" "It was a blood sport for The Telegraph, The Times, The Spectator" "They have blood on their hands for this man"

The UK press needs some fucking accountability and it needs it now. Leveson 2 for starters but so much more. It’s beyond a joke. And still the government lets them dictate the agenda every time. #NoMoreDeaths #NoMoreLies #NoMoreDistractions.

It’s now abundantly clear that if the world ever needs an enema then they’ll stick it in Clacton. However I do recognise that almost ten thousand Calctonites understood the assignment. I applaud them and encourage them to relocate to somewhere less arseholey.

Today is the 11th anniversary of the Gender Recognition Act here in Ireland. I will always celebrate this day as the State finally recognized my gender. Decades of campaigning led to the Act. I owe a debt to those who went before me We were the 4th country in the world to bring in such legislation

Gold standard.

1/🧵 We do need to talk more about the illegality and lawlessness of the Cass Review. Hilary Cass cited Anne Wæhre's then-unpublished “study” via “personal communication”. It was later published at doi:10.1007/s00787-024-02508-5 and doi:10.1111/apa.17530, and the papers have now been retracted.

Agree with this. And the same applies broadly to the so called culture wars. You’re not going to stop the far right from agitating, but you CAN take a values led approach and tell a different story that will appeal to the majority. Even a subset of the electorate that have been hoodwinked by reform.

I think what the Labour leadership sees as a variable in this equation - the anti-immigrant anger of the right - is in fact a constant. If that was recognised it could fundamentally change the ability of government to appropriately and constructively respond to immigration and asylum challenges.

Q: How many Prime Ministers will the UK go through before politicians learn that what Rupert Murdoch wants is not what the majority of the electorate want? A: Time, or the collapse of civilisation, will tell.

Kind of staggered at how many supposedly serious commentators don’t see this. For whatever reason the political class seem to be unable to acknowledge the progressive voting bloc properly even when it’s slapping them in the face.

Scotland have won a World Cup match for the first time since I was 12 years old. I should be over the moon, but when I woke up the world was still on fire and far right forces are still pouring petrol on the flames. Well done though, boys. Proud of you. #SuperJohnMcGinn

According to the EHRC groups can form for more than one protected characteristic, and an example was given that group could be formed for “women” AND trans people, but specifically not for “cis and trans women”. I don’t understand how such a thing can be law - do we not actually have anything in

UK law that codifies the right of freedom of association directly, or is this only indirectly as part of the human rights act? Either way, how can it possibly be legal that an association can’t declare it is for “for women and is trans inclusive”? Can any of my legal gurus explain it?

I’m not suggesting the Peter Murrell story isn’t valid news, but yet again we see a disparity in how media is treating Nigel Farage and how it treats anyone from a progressive party. Nige’s 5 million seems to be low priority news now because he’s been allowed to sit out while the news cycle moves on

Solidarity is the only way out of this hole. The direction of travel puts everyone outside of the ruling class at risk. If you believe in any kind of justice, stand up now for those being marginalised. Human rights are unconditional or they’re not human rights. We should all agree on that.

Can somebody please explain to this government that running to keep up with the Overton window’s movement is not “leading”. Real leadership would be explicitly standing up for trans people and immigrants and telling the country why it’s right to do so.

Given the onslaught of anti trans bullshit from the media and the media chasing government, this is such a wonderful thing to read. Maybe most people are actually happy for people to be themselves. Hate can wear you down and hurt you, but it can’t win in the long run.

This is such an important point. One of things I believe the equality act 2010 excelled at was its definition of trans identities being broad enough to include those proposing to undergo transition - without age qualification. This should provide a powerful legal weapon to resist this rebranding.

Cal Horton (they/them)@fiercemum.bsky.social

There is a wholescale concerted effort to rebrand trans children as gender questioning children. If the whole group are re-labelled, then they cannot claim rights as a minority group. If they are all re-labelled, then conversion efforts can just about helping them 'explore their gender'.

Watching the usual political circus unfold. Mandelson is now playing the usual lightning-rod role for an outraged political establishment. Little to no acknowledgement he’s the tip of an iceberg. This is part of a political culture that’s pushing our democracy towards corporate oligarchy.

“The Spanish government has announced a plan to legalise the status of undocumented migrants, a measure expected to benefit at least half a million people.” This is great news from Spain! 🇪🇸 It’s possible for governments to refuse racist politics and provide greater security for people who migrate.

bbc.co.ukSpain plans to give 500,000 undocumented migrants legal statusThe process will be available to foreign nationals without a criminal record who can prove they lived in Spain for five months prior to 31 December 2025.

Can’t believe 2026 is a write off already. It’s like a brand new car driven out of the showroom and then immediately smashed, set on fire, and buried in horseshit. Can we pretend this is just the death throes of 2025 and actually this going to be a great year?
