Never saw Titanic when it was released so I'm watching it for the first time as it's on Japanese telly. Totally unbelievable. There's no way such a well built ship would sink just from hitting an iceberg.

I’m hoping the progress is: “How about we don’t start offloading the $1 trillion in US Treasuries we’re holding?”

Recently released footage shows the moment an earthquake struck Kumamoto General Hospital in Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture, during surgery on July 28, as doctors immediately protect the patient and nurses scramble to secure an evacuation route.

Forget red card shenanigans. FIFA should use vexillology to decide the quarter-finals: France vs Belgium, Argentina vs Spain, and Norway, England and Switzerland play a mini round-robin, with the loser taking on Morocco.

This brings back fond memories of PostPet, where a cartoon bear carried my email across the internet. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PostPet

Roost is a messaging app where messages aren’t instant; they travel between users at the speed of whichever bird they use to send it. Note sending is limited by the # of birds in your rookery…if they’re all out, you have to wait until one returns. [roostsocial.app]

This is kind of amazing: World Monitor is a real-time global intelligence dashboard. Includes military activity, climate anomalies, live webcam feeds in warzones, internet outages, active fires, and even the Pentagon Pizza Index. [worldmonitor.app]

Recently an elderly relative asked if I'd 'got the pedophile.' Somewhat alarmed, I asked them to clarify. They meant the PDF. The F apparently means 'file'

Very nice!

Thetrusize.com, by James Talmage and Damon Maneice, is a website that lets you move a country or state around a Mercator projection map of the world so you can see how big or small a country really is. [thetruesize.com]

My previous place in Shibuya faced west, so I often got front-row seats to Tokyo’s spectacular summer sunsets. Now we face east, great views over Tokyo, but sunsets only reach me as reflections in the towers Shibuya has pooped out over the years.

The Japanese government's latest Mynaportal app update allows you to add your My Number card to your iPhone's Apple Wallet. Servers were a little busy but it works as advertised.

Sounds like the premise of a great heist movie.

I’m all for people doing cosplay, but it’s weird how US immigration and law enforcement always go with Ghost from Call of Duty. One Piece or Ghibli characters would really liven up the vibe.

Guardian photographer David Levene and I travelled to Okinawa a couple of months ago to make this video/text/photography package to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Okinawa. A real team effort that would not have been possible without colleagues in Okinawa, London and Sydney.
