What do music playlists, bookmarks, photo albums, pinned locations on maps all have in common? Well, they are all types of user-curated collections. So I've written a proposal for a lexicon that handles heterogenous collections of *things*.

highly recommend to @chaosgreml.in's reading this wonderful piece about building coalition
Thanks so much to @rpg.actor for joining me for my read of "Coalition Politics: Turning the Century"! I hope you'll watch the video, because I think this message is crucial for folks on here to listen to & learn from if we are to try & make the open social web something durable & transformative.
oh wow the Avalanches exploring digital nostalgia, combined with these overbearingly abrupt interludes of spazzy chopped up samples of advertisements.

I appreciate Community Fund for the opportunity to spread the word about the social internet we're building together, tomorrow I'll be attending The Public Interest Technology Summit to network with orgs, funders, and builders!
AANYWAY, Chris and I are able to do this because we’ve been graciously sponsored by @ngerakines.me and the folks at the AT Protocol Community Fund, which includes Nick, @knowtheory.net, and @bmann.ca! We’ve also got a VERY cool item from @rpg.actor for folks who we connect with at events!

Very excited to see, I get a feeling we'll be see many more rich embeds popping up across bluesky clients! The Blacksky team did a great job progressively enhancing the embed for this, which is to say if another bluesky client doesn't support it, it falls back to a link embed.
Introducing Discussions - a new way to have conversations on Blacksky 🗣️ Now you can create a dynamic poll right from the post composer in the app to ask questions, get feedback, or to build community around any and every topic you find interesting.
Hoping to share some writing that dives deeper into this soon, but the angle for shifting the overton window that I find compelling is popularizing the idea of Account Service Providers, streamline the infrastructure to make it happen, and advocate for laws/regulation to sustain it.
I was thinking about atproto more and had a thought: no one needs to know or care about the protocol. we just need to normalize the idea that it’s bonkers to allow any company to own part of your identity it’s like how you used to lose your phone number if you switched carriers. that sucked

Updated my folksonomy with a new type of lexicon, the meta-lexicon. It's very cool to see, particularly the part where different accounts/orgs can choose how lexicons should be searched across. I've come across a need for this type of lexicon too, I wonder if we should attempt to standardize it

Yes, my take is that Bluesky PBC isn't a social media company, they're a dev infrastructure company that happens to be dogfooding their infra by building a clone of twitter. The priority is to make money by selling infra that will power the social internet, not from the bluesky app becoming big.
Is it Bluesky (PBLLC)'s responsibility to make sure that other apps in the Atmosphere gain user traffic?
@ricardo.bsky.social talked about this too, most atmospheric apps are going to be ground-up, tasteful businesses not startups. But atmospheric infrastructure has a path to receive startup-level investing because the speculative value can be huge.
A decentralized protocol upends everything we know about building for the internet, including how to build a business. @ricardo.bsky.social has some insights on the way forward. atproto.com/off-protocol...

thinking a lot about this last space with playhtml.fun & how we can take advantage of existing contextual existence in our normal browsing of the web has anyone mapped out all these different angles of social media trying to think of what the axes are… public vs private global vs contextual?
the most interesting (and under-explored) design spaces to me right now are: "structured" public conversation (meaning scope/locality but still public) flexible spectrum of visibility but usable. Livejournal was the best at this IMO

In case you didn't here, Bluesky is adopting the at-tags proposal!
I wonder what stage of platform decay Youtube is at where they've gone from A/B testing thumbnails and reclassifying views as the first frame of the video loading to A/B testing actual videos with the same URL?

Ok, how are we feeling about the at-tags proposal? Small core, open to extension, seems like it's a good starting point to me 🤔
the playbook for most digital platforms will continue to be gain adoption via network effects and integrations from open protocols, then lock things down by removing open protocols.
Reddit announced they are winding down RSS feeds: "Because RSS is now a common surface for large-scale scraping and automated abuse, we’ll stop supporting RSS feeds on November 13, 2026 while preserving moderation workflows that depend on it through supported alternatives." Just another silo.
Feels like atproto is around this point – past commercial access to the web (CIX, 1991) and just before the world-wide web was fully operational (~1996). itsec.group/blog-post-sh...

It's worth noting that technological mysticism isn't specific to the computer or AI. It's a continuation of a much deeper zeitgeist that Leo Marx calls the technological sublime, which is deeply interwoven in to the founding and history of America.
The idea of a "tech industry" has always relied on "computer" being a special kind of medium, akin to alchemy. And if tech demands to be king, AI hype has now elevated LLMs to a king of kings. But the solipsism has hit a dead end. The only way forward is to recognize that computers are not special.
