Congratulations Kristin Persson! I’m a huge fan of the Materials Project and proud to have Kristin on the editorial board for MLST journal @iopp-mlresearch.bsky.social

🎉 Congratulations to Kristin Persson of @ucberkeleyofficial.bsky.social & the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, winner of the 2026 Pritzker Prize for AI in Science Research Excellence! Founder of the Materials Project, she has pioneered the open-source, data-driven revolution in materials science

The paper connects with foundational ideas laid out by Lüscher (who is wicked smaht) and uses GOT Astra + lean formalization in ways that are perhaps subtly different than in math because of the role of recorded assumptions vs. axioms.

It’s technical, but briefly: the matter content of the SM (electrons, quarks, etc) are fermions and they are “chiral” (they have left-handed and right-handed components that behave differently).

Yesterday we held our inaugural AI in academia coffee hour @uwmadison.bsky.social — a forum to discuss the existential issues AI raises in academia. Our topic and pre-read was the Leiden declaration. It couldn’t have been more timely with OpenAI’s drop of math results dsi.wisc.edu/rise-ai-hq/a...

The 2026 Physics Nobel Prize to Francis Halzen is well deserved! I wrote the attached explainer for the public from the perspective of someone who has worked in this field and known Francis for decades. I welcome helping sharing it. Congratulations to Francis and all! medium.com/@beacom.7/ho...

medium.comHow Neutrinos, Which Barely Exist, Just Ran Off with a Nobel Prize — Again!John Beacom (Ohio State University), with no assistance from AI

Interesting coincidence that the Nobel to Halzen for “the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin” comes on the same day as this milestone that there are things beyond our own galaxy 103 years ago.

VAR! In the early morning hours #OTD in 1923, Edwin Hubble took a photo plate of M31 that showed a Cepheid variable star. Using Henrietta Swan Leavitt’s distance-luminosity relationship, Hubble concluded that M31 is another galaxy outside the Milky Way. 🧪 🔭 ⚛️ Image: Carnegie Observatories

Congratulations to Francis, my friend and colleague! I am happy to see his bold vision and tenacity honored at the highest level. I took his class @uwmadison.bsky.social, taught from his book, and now I’m proud to be his colleague. His enthusiasm has never waned, he is a timeless physicist.

BREAKING NEWS The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2026 #NobelPrize in Physics to Francis Halzen “for decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin.”

It’s especially good today because neutrinos are just so much fun to talk about. They’re little! They’re weird! They sneakily transform themselves to other flavors when no one is looking!

I know the #NobelPrize has many downsides, but the upside is that today a lot more people than usual are talking about #physics.

Screw-ups should be costly. There should be a high government fine on top of it, plus paying to clean-up and re-secure the systems hacked. These are equivalent to industrial accidents and should be treated as such, imo

Under pressure, the DOD just released the text of its secret 10-year agreement with the NIH. Here are the biggest revelations from the document 🧵

I created a new interface for the 4D Rubik's cube, that I like better than the standard 4D > 3D projection. It flattens the hypercube by cutting along the faces and unrolling it into 3D. You can see all 8 cubes at once and it's more intuitive theoryandpractice.org/cube4d/hyper...

I've been thinking about the Rubik's cube in 4D. I found an old java version from by Don Hatch and Melinda Green and decided to ask claude to port it to a standalone web app that can run in your browser. Having put a lot of effort into the university's preparedness for the Genesis mission, I'm very pleased with the outcome! Way to @uwmadison.bsky.social . And congratulations to Realta Fusion and SHINE making Madison a hotbed of Genesis activity!

5 UW–Madison projects were selected for funding through the U.S. Department of Energy’s new Genesis Mission, an initiative using AI and advanced computing to accelerate breakthroughs in energy, scientific discovery and national security. UW earned more awards than any public university in the U.S.

Proud of UW-Madison and the Madison area's showing with Genesis (even though my proposal wasn't selected). Happy to say that the Data Science Institute is supporting some of the successful proposals.

Weeks ago, @chanda.blacksky.app sent me this declaration, written and signed by a bunch of mathematicians. But I only had time to read it yesterday, which ended up being right on time given a new round of hype falling exactly under the patterns this document notes.🧵 leidendeclaration.ai
