Recently, there was quite a furore in Australia's parliament about invasive species management. It seemed to me there was some misunderstanding about terminology & the very important reasons for controlling some introduced & invasive species. So, I wrote this 👉 theconversation.com/calling-spec...

theconversation.comCalling species ‘invasive’ – and culling them – isn’t done lightly. But it matters to Australia’s threatened speciesInvasive species only want to live. But their success can come at great cost to native species. If we treat them the same, native animals lose.

Spooky season tree. Look closer: those are end-of-season spotted lanternflies, right before egg-laying. Scraping and stomping now is how we hope to see fewer next spring.

Late October lanternfly tip: the adults are done soon, but their egg masses will sit through winter. Look for gray, mud-like smears on tree bark, stone walls, patio furniture and trailer hitches. Scrape them into a bag with rubbing alcohol. Each one you catch now is up to 50 fewer nymphs in spring.

Every spotted lanternfly egg mass holds 30 to 50 eggs. Winter is the best time to scrape them. Look for gray, mud-like patches on tree trunks, fences and outdoor furniture. We're a people-powered campaign to protect native habitats from invasive species, starting with lanternflies. lanternhunt.org
