Thank you for writing this. The terminology point matters, because 'invasive' describes real harm to native species, and clear wording helps people understand why control work is sometimes necessary.

South Africa, sent in, and they cruise to 50 for no loss of wickets. Well-played, selectors!

Few people like killing animals, & nobody who likes it should work in conservation. But sadly, as Euan explains, it can be necessary. Some people think that choosing not to kill invasive animals is a passive kindness, but it’s a cruel choice to not help the native animals killed by invasive animals.

Recently, there was quite a furore in Australia's parliament about invasive species management. It seemed to me there was some misunderstanding about terminology & the very important reasons for controlling some introduced & invasive species. So, I wrote this 👉 theconversation.com/calling-spec...

theconversation.comCalling species ‘invasive’ – and culling them – isn’t done lightly. But it matters to Australia’s threatened speciesInvasive species only want to live. But their success can come at great cost to native species. If we treat them the same, native animals lose.

He chose not to act. Over and over again, he was too busy meeting donors to act on violence against women.

The answer is of course…Cairns!

At around 3:40 pm Darwin time/5:10 pm Melbourne time, I'll be chatting with Liz Trevaskis (ABC Darwin) about the great debate. Which Aussie city is the 'city of birds'? As a mammalogist, who has lived in Northern & Southern Australia, I feel perfectly qualified to objectively resolve this debate.

With respect, @mehreenfaruqi.bsky.social, this statement risks misleading the public and undermining vital conservation efforts. "For decades, successive governments have culled and killed introduced species, and yet native species are in a worse position today." au.news.yahoo.com/greens-senat...

So, are we ready to talk about how common this is in rural Australia, inconvenient as it may be, because people taking ownership for their dog’s behaviour is far less desirable and exciting than blaming ‘wild dogs’, i.e. dingoes. www.abc.net.au/news/2026-10...

Relevant again in Safeguard Mechanism review season👇 Also weird how carbon market advisors talk earnestly about need to "scrutinise how we ensure that carbon credits accelerate decarbonisation & don’t delay meaningful action”, but never share investigative evidence of offset proj integrity failures

The cognitive dissonance and hypocrisy are staggering. This feels like cigarette producers touring oncology wards www.abc.net.au/news/2026-10...

Still not convinced that a majority of attempts at offsets are meaningfully mitigating the harms some claim they do, in fact in many cases it appears they are very much helping to fuel the harms, on account of laws of physics, chemistry, and ecological realities on a finite planet.
