I’m not much of a gamer but I picked up the Division 2 recently to play on the steam deck. This is the most infuriating game I’ve played. Its dependence on network is insane. You’ll just be playing and suddenly everything goes to shit and you got to start over. It’s fun when it works.

Went to the All Things Open conference last week, which I do every year along with our local DevOps Days, and it feels like these conferences are dying while trying to cling to AI. The structure changed this year so day 1 was a workshop day. 1/N

We are still solving the same problems in the cloud native space but it feels like we’ve entirely abandoned that while trying to make AI the center of attention instead of treating it as an accelerant for the problems we still see day to day. 5/N

I think one talk that got close to this was Dynatrace’s blue box agent, bringing observability closer to the code being written. Even still, this feels like it requires Dynatrace, it’ll be another bill, and the agent is dependent upon whatever LLM they’ve chosen. Meh, the excitement feels gone.

It feels like these conferences have abandoned what we do on a day to day basis. A attended a talk on a k8s tool and it was the most packed talk I attended. The other talks I attended were sparse in attendance and rightfully so, they mostly seemed to be a solution looking for a problem. 3/N

I’m not sure I’ll be heading back next year to either of my local conferences. My local DoD struggled to get sponsorship in 2025 and didn’t hold an event. 2026 there was a fraction of sponsors and it felt if something doesn’t change it won’t be around much longer. 4/N

I attended a workshop called “AI agents in production” but it was an introduction to using Claude Cowork. Not quite what I assumed as someone who has built agents, harnesses, and lights out factories. The workshop ran from 9-430, and it was great if you’ve never used Claude before. 2/N

I’ve been working on a Linear/.app #prometheus exporter and yesterday I got a PR! I’m looking forward to reviewing this afternoon.

My stint with #android is coming to an end. It's largely "death by a thousand paper cuts" and not just one thing. There's definitely a lot I like but ultimately it's just not going to work out.

I've really enjoyed working on boundary lately. I'm a solo engineer at a cloud service provider start-up who inherited a very unorganized monorepo of 15+ #golang services and #reactjs portals. Building objectivity + configurability into the scoring engine has been a challenge but progress on track.

I'm using cargo-dist which makes having a #Homebrew tap really easy. So, if you're on a Mac you can: brew install rebelopsio/tap/boundary brew install rebelopsio/tap/boundary-lsp

My espresso machine is not working and needs to be sent for repair. This makes me sad as I've had to resort to Starbucks. I had found a local repair company but they don't work on Breville, which was sad to find out.

I finally replaced my $10 coffee scale. I ended up going with a Bookoo Themis Ultra. I don't know why it took me so long but the consistency compared to my old scale is excellent.

Ok, I just finished my JSON tokenizer and parser (focused on a particular struct shape) before moving on to a generic implementation using comptime and reflection. #ziglang #zig

I've been using Claude web as a "mentor" and this response made me feel good: "Excellent question! This shows you're thinking like a systems programmer. You're absolutely right to be concerned, and your instinct from "valid parentheses" is spot-on!" 🙌

I wrote some #ziglang that uses an allocator, got it to compile, and now I'm learning about lifetimes and where I need to deinit(). 😅 It's funny, I'm really drawn to #rustlang for reasons like the tool chain, but really struggled to feel productive. Zig feels productive but without the toolchain.

As someone who primarily writes #Golang, I've really enjoyed the similarities when learning #Ziglang. I'm working through Ziglings and haven't written anything substantial but in my current journey I don't feel like the learning curve is as high as #Rustlang.

The iOS 26 upgrade got under my skin enough that I recently decided to try the pixel 10 pro xlmnop. It's largely fine and I can put up with a lot so long as the camera is solid and consistent. One thing that I do miss is Apple Books and the iCloud integration that it and other apps had.

I have kids so being able to have my collection of ebooks accessible from a simple e-reader app is great. I've copied my collection into drive but haven't quite found an app that cleanly integrates. I was hoping Google Books would offer what I was looking for but it doesn't appear to.

Got hit with a graph problem yesterday during an interview. I wasn't prepared. I definitely need to spend more time preparing before doing anymore interviews. I've been enjoying the Coding Interview Patterns book so I'm jumping back into that while also squeezing in some time with a #ziglang project

Both of our dogs passed away this year. It's been a tough one but my wife put our yard on an app so people with dogs can rent it and it's been so awesome. Someone just brought their dog here for two hours because it was their pup's birthday 🤩
