Caught one fnal glimpse of Oxford Street's last day as a tragic thoroughfare yesterday Overheard one person saying she'd rather walk the underground tunnels than on street level there. It'll be great to see people's reactions to it without the vehicles

Some of these products were recalled because they're a fire risk - and yet they are being sold on Facebook Marketplace, as Mark has discovered. A lot of people just won't know they are buying a potentially lethal product www.cyclingelectric.com/news/faceboo...

Of nearly 19,000 driving violations captured over two weeks, precisely zero drivers were prosecuted. This is because there isn't enough back-office capacity at West Midlands Police, and the process to issue fines hasn't kept pace with camera tech. www.bbc.com/news/article...

A curious incident in the Greenwich foot tunnel y'day. Chap riding a Lime bike passing a group of walkers, and when someone said 'no cycling', he said he worked for Lime, so it was OK. Both lifts were broken so the Limes were all stuck down there. His job: parking them in a long line by the lifts

I think there needs to be a better solution for hire bikes in those tunnels, and for goodness sake, can't someone sort out those lifts? If this goes on much longer it'll be end-to-end Lime bikes, then there really won't be room for cycling, or walking

At the Greenwich entrance to the foot tunnel there's now signs saying 'no e-bikes' but a steady stream of the cumbersome hire e-bikes were being carried down the many stairs by people presuming the other lift would be working. Those bikes are probably still down there.

When challenged further, he became quite rude and told them to 'mind your own business'. Which after saying who he was working for didn't seem that smart. With both lifts currently broken I've no idea how they'll get out of there,

I was in Utrecht for the annual Velo City conference last week and got to cycle slowly around the world's largest bike parking garage beneath the Centraal station. Room for 12,500 bikes and the first 24h of parking is free

Now updated with Cycle to Work Alliance comments, saying Cycle to Work providers have safeguards in place to ensure supplied e-bikes are legal and meet required safety standards. Also from Cyclescheme: While it is not illegal for retailers to supply illegal e-motos, they aren't eligible under C2W

Laura Laker@lauralaker.bsky.social

News that people are buying illegal e-motos for commuting; some without realising they aren't road legal and allegedly even via Cycle to Work. The new E-Bike Positive Trust Mark will help, but plenty of public confusion still. My latest for Cycling Industry News cyclingindustry.news/commuters-in...

While long-term funding is key to the National Cycle Network's success, £104m over four years is £26m a year... the equivalent of upgrading a single A-road junction. CWIS3, the government's four-year strategy mentioned '7,000 additional or improved [NCN] miles by 2030'...so £14,857 per mile?

Update - I'm told because this is not the only investment in the NCN it can't be divided up by the mileage pledge, which will also be funded through other means. This one is for projects delivered directly by the Walk, Wheel, Cycle Trust

I'm not convinced this is the first long-term funding ever for the NCN... I've certainly heard this phrase before. There was long-term announced in the early 2020s, under Boris Johnson's government, but subsequent years were then slashed, which I guess counts that one out

Celebrating something positive (and for a piece I'm working on), what do you love about your local bike shop?

Laura Laker@lauralaker.bsky.social

I was in Southend recently, with a puncture that I just couldn't repair. On my travels I visited two excellent local bike shops who went above and beyond to help me... and in the spirit of celebrating local bike shops here they are

I know you're dying to know... yes the 210l water butt is almost full again after a little rain here in London. Going to give the garden a good soaking before the next rainfall, coming soon

Laura Laker@lauralaker.bsky.social

We're gonna need a bigger (water)butt

Also, last week I visited a friend and her allotment, where, on a neighbouring plot, two IBCs were filled over late winter/ early spring by this tiny shed roof. These are 100l *each*. Food for thought for future dry summers° °looks for other downpipes

I took a large ebike out for a test ride last week, and it was glorious. The tent, I fear, has tented its last, but has done a solid 15 years' service
