"Don't produce literature"????? "Don't produce science"????? There is no alchemy without Arabic and thus no chemistry. There would be no need for a Fields Prize had they not, uh, INVENTED ALGEBRA. wtaf

RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

I have met the child across the street precisely twice, and I would be able to come up with three positive bullet points about her. This Mayer gal has some issues

cool, cool

I'm only gonna say this once this year, and it is now: the days do not get shorter. Still 24 hours. There is a shorter amount of day with sunlight in the Northern Hemisphere during the winter. Changing the clocks does not alter this fact. Take your consternation up with planet Earth and its axis

The clocks will return to standard time. You will feel better if you shift your schedule slightly earlier. We will have more sunlight for more of the day beginning after the winter solstice. By March, you will notice significantly later sunsets whether we change the clocks or not. So mote it be.

If this guy cannot ascertain, at this point in the Year of Our Lord 2026, that Queens businessman Donald John Trump is functionally unembarrassable, then I'm not sure he's a well of opinion you want to keep drawing from

LOL, yeah, this guy is so not going to Mars

Ah, the auto influencers have explained that this carbon fiber-wrapped ball, which sits right behind the driver's head, holds about 100kg of nitrogen pressurized to about 10,000 psi. Let me just go review the tolerances people found in their Cyber Trucks

When you were a kid, what were your most UNDERRATED Halloween trick or treat candies? The ones that weren't your top favorites, but that you were still happy to get in your bag, and that never let you down

Totally willing to trade away Red Hots, Hot Tamales, and Mellowcreme pumpkins. The absolute worst, to me, was Necco wafers (sorry, Massachusetts people, they have the texture and appeal of eating chalk)

I imagine this will come as a surprise to all those RAGBRAI people

With Tom Skerritt's passing, the cast of Alien have so far died in the same order as the director's cut (where they find Dallas still alive waiting to become a cocoon): 1) John Hurt 2) Harry Dean Stanton 3) Ian Holm 4) Yaphet Kotto 5) Tom Skerritt It's macabre, sure, but it's also fascinating.

What could possibly go wrong

Scoop from @brettlogiurato.bsky.social: CBS has sold its local election night coverage to DraftKings, stirring more controversy inside the David Ellison-owned company. Details in @status.news: www.status.news/p/cbs-draftk...

If I had one policy I could implement at major newsgathering organizations, it would be"you can no longer punt writing web headlines to the weakest writers in the newsroom". It's tricky, it's nuanced, and requires experience. You cannot just toss it to the intern because you are busy

Saw my first dark money ad for Roger Marshall yesterday (I don't really watch much visual media, but I watched a movie on Tubi yesterday) and I quite literally laughed out loud

it's like talking to a 5-year-old hopped up on sugar. "What do you want when you grow up, Timmy?" "Imma go to Mars! And have a talking car like KITT! And build a real life Hot Wheels track for it at my house so I can do loop-de-loops! And everyone will always think I am the coolest!"

Politico quotes Roger Marshall as saying "If my opponent were elected, it would give Chuck Schumer and AOC control of the Senate," which I find mystifying since Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is in the House of Representatives and I am unaware of her having authority in the U.S. Senate

I have been reading some of the research literature on institutional trauma, because whenever (gestures around) this becomes something else, I think it's something we are going to be talking about until well after I die

I'd probably go get a history Ph.D.

question for the audience: if you were ultra rich (let’s say $25M), what completely frivolous thing are you buying?

Seriously, if I had no monetary worries at all I'd just go back to school and just keep going, collect a whole passel of doctorates. History, JD, library science, sociology, civil planning, epidemiology, whatever I felt like

I don't understand how the question about Elizabeth Holmes has turned into "was she a grifter?" and not "how did a billionaire just not have anyone tell her about Olaplex"

Yes, I definitely want to get into a flying car made by the company whose products occasionally spectacularly catch on fire or randomly explode

there is some misinformation, miscommunication around the fact that I labeled myself as Queen Victoria, Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and Empress of India. I consulted for a long time many people in the field of history, is it OK if I label myself QV, QUKGBI and E of I?

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Zacharia: "A lot of the misinformation, miscommunication is around the fact that I labeled myself a lawyer. I consulted for a long time many people in the field -- 'Is it ok if I label myself a lawyer?' -- and they said, 'Absolutely. You can call yourself a lawyer. You have a JD'"

...and they all said "Laura, have you checked your dosage recently?" and I said "yes" and they said "uh...whatever, babe, weird flex but you do you" so here we are

I know I am a provincial nobody but never once in my life have I ever, ever thought "Man, I have a bunch of vacation time, I gotta go hang out in Dubai"

If I want 113-degree days and periodically questionable air quality, I can do that here for free... with the bonus of being able to say mean things about civic infrastructure on WhatsApp without fear of imprisonment

If I had funds for a vacation, I would never go someplace hot. That's just mysterious to me. Iceland, the Orkneys, the Faroes, Nova Scotia, Tierra del Fuego for me

I did foreign extemp and captained the quiz bowl team. I enjoyed being stage manager for play productions. I was vocal about liking prog while everyone else was into Madonna & Duran Duran. My favorite book was The Gulag Archipelago and I listened to shortwave radio. I eat disdain for breakfast

i will never care if bluesky is popular! i did Odyssey of the Mind! i took robotics in high school (and sucked at it!) i was on a Harold team at iO West! NOT iO. iO *WEST.* i am immune to popularity!!

I am completely furious with the author of the book I have just read, which consists of essays putatively about a topic which interests me, but after 40 pages she just quits thinking about the interesting issue and goes all in on what I mentally call "literary selfies"

Might have been helpful to have included "starts off strong but detours into extremely tedious narcissism, and good luck if you wanted to hear more about the theoretical topic at hand" in the blurbs. I don't care about "luminous prose", I care about "addresses the topic"

How this became an NYT Notable Book is beyond me. Maybe I should write the book I thought this was going to be. At least I know how to stick to the goddamned subject

I finished the book because I thought "surely she must get back to what I thought was the thesis, here" but no, she does not, and now I am resentful that this person has a job and that this book was widely lauded

Why is he wearing a pajama top?

i've identified the Dockers store where Michael Tracy bought and then subsequently returned these pants after wearing them. i will be pursuing criminal prosecution.
