I'm invisible on social media, so can I say whatever I want? Labels I choose: Diarist, journalism grad, author, retired editor, gardener, nature & animal lover, amateur photographer, amateur historian, news junkie, Nor. Nevadan (USA). I voted for Harris.

I have a lot of "for my eyes only" photos on my computer. I'm not a pervert--they are imperfect nature photos that I still like. Here's an example. Is it a baby hawk? I don't know. #birdoftheday #branch

Today I learned there are $5,000 coffee makers. (My sister knows someone who bought one.) I had to go back to read her text again to be sure I got that number right.

Her ear suddenly flopped over yesterday morning. Diagnosis: hematoma pulled it down. Treatment: steroid. I'm so grateful Peak Pet Urgent Care was able to see her yesterday, but the vet didn't warn me the steroid would make her desperately have to pee at 4 a.m.! No change in the ear so far.

Angrier and more unhinged in every press conference, maybe Elon has told him it’s impossible to rig the numbers this time.

I'm in Nevada, USA, so there would be something wrong if I couldn't find a photo I've taken with a #Brown background for #birdoftheday! I took this one of a great blue heron in the Boynton Slough in Reno Jan. 13.

Kindle as usual--English History Made Brief, Irreverent, and Pleasurable by Lacey Baldwin Smith. (Occasionally paperback or hardcover. Never audiobook.)

What format are you reading in today? Kindle, paperback, or audiobook?

Chocolate-flavored coffee now and Earl Grey tea during what passes for news in the evening. Every day.

Word Wenches@wordwenches.bsky.social

Today on @wordwenches, @AnneGracie is talking about #coffee, #tea and #chocolate (the drink), which were all initially regarded with deep suspicion when they first came to the west. Do you have a favorite? wordwenches.com/coffee-tea-o...

Yesterday was the first day of voting here, and I took my completed ballot to a voting center. This morning I was able to confirm online it had been received and is ready to be counted on Election Day. That's the way we do it in Nevada.

For today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme of #Dawn. An American robin in a crabapple tree Feb. 15, 2016. Slide Mountain on the left; Mount Rose on the right (in the Sierra Nevada range). Reno, Nevada USA.

Good idea! Anyone know of a list? I’ve gotten both genuine and fake requests myself and almost dismissed real invitations out of fear of being tricked.

James Kneale@jameskneale.bsky.social

Is anyone keeping a list of groups or individuals who send spurious emails to authors asking them to discuss their books? It's not that I'm getting tons of these (😁) but I'd like to be able to spot the wrong 'uns. thanks!

Say it: Gulf of Mexico

Tropical Storm Isaias formed early Wednesday in the warm waters off eastern Mexico and forecasters said it was expected to strengthen into a hurricane and hit the U.S. Gulf Coast later in the week.

The wild part of my back yard now. That's rabbitbrush, not sagebrush! The cottontails and quail/s thrive in it. The "bench" is from a cottonwood tree. Northern Nevada, USA #nativeplants

The truly sad thing about all these scam posters on social media is that they prevent me from responding to what could very well be legit reader questions and requests. I can't trust any post anymore. How does one get around that?

My son texted from his cruise that the ship had been rocking for the past 12 hours and they put out the barf bags. They had to change the cruise itinerary to skip Ensenada and Cabo San Lucas and stop at Puerto Vallarta tomorrow instead. In case anyone is interested.

Polo has weakened somewhat, but it remains a major hurricane with sustained winds of 125 mph. Landfall on the Baja coast is expected around 5 p.m. Monday. The National Hurricane Center forecasts winds around 110 mph at landfall.

I live near a @tmfr.bsky.social station and just see the firefighters greeting me and my dog, washing their trucks, and generally doing nothing. I don't begrudge them any of that free time because I know they are willing to do this work at a moment's notice. They've had to do it this year for sure.

The Conversation U.S.@us.theconversation.com

“It’s like a workout in a hotbox.” Wildland firefighters work an average of 13.8 hours per shift in extreme heat, often for weeks at a time. The relentless heat, stress and smoke can take a serious toll on their bodies and their ability to make lifesaving decisions.

I love wedding cake, and when my son and his fiance wanted me to be specific, I said I liked buttercream frosting. The frosting seemed bland last night, and now I know why. I refrigerated my leftover piece, and today the "frosting" is thick, solid butter with a trace of sugar. Solid butter.

World Gratitude Day is new to me, and I love it. Personally, life is much more pleasant when you consciously appreciate the good things in it. I have many. My son was married yesterday, and everyone was gushing with gratitude. I was grateful for all of it. 😉

Now for my sermon. Few people seem to realize the value of EXPRESSING gratitude, appreciation, or praise, especially to students, employees, and volunteers. It doesn't cost anything, and it can make all the difference.

It would be impressive no matter what job the builder has! This is patronizing.

Quick question for readers of online literary journals: when browsing a table of contents or author index and you click on a poem or story, do you prefer it to open in a new tab so the original page stays open, or would you rather it open in the same tab? Curious what you prefer! Thanks!
