Fascinating piece about a scam most academic authors in now face on the regular

Oisín McGann@oisinmcgann.bsky.social

If you’re an author who’s been receiving verbose AI scam emails on a daily basis, and you’re wondering how gullible and ego-driven people think you are, this article helps to explain them. Sadly, they are successful enough to have been built into a big business. www.thedial.world/articles/new...

Good idea! Anyone know of a list? I’ve gotten both genuine and fake requests myself and almost dismissed real invitations out of fear of being tricked.

James Kneale@jameskneale.bsky.social

Is anyone keeping a list of groups or individuals who send spurious emails to authors asking them to discuss their books? It's not that I'm getting tons of these (😁) but I'd like to be able to spot the wrong 'uns. thanks!

I am floored and delighted and so, so honored to announce that The Fate of the Americas won the Friedrich Katz Prize in Latin American and Caribbean History from @historians.org! This is definitely a career highlight. Huge thanks to the committee and the AHA. www.historians.org/perspectives...

I’m teaching a workshop this weekend about how historians research. #Skystorians, what are your favorite or most important research tips and tricks? What is your favorite method for finding archives and archival material?

Super scoop from Nora Gámez at Miami Herald. We now have details of the deal Trump admin was trying to push on Cuba through back channel negotiations via Raulito (Raúl's bodyguard/grandson/GAESA fixer): -Diaz-Canel leaves gov -country's oil monopoly privatized www.miamiherald.com/news/nation-...

I'm teaching Race, Law and US Society, which is on this list and has been deemed "too narrow." Some readings: US Constitution, Federalist Papers, Notes on the State of Virginia, Cherokee Nation Cases, Scott v. Stanford, Brown v Board... so US legal history... too narrow? Or just too about race?

AAUP chapter @UT Austin@utaustinaaup.bsky.social

Chaos and authoritarianism at UT Austin. Faculty have just days to show how their courses meet vague requirements of breadth and foundationalism. Proposals will be reviewed by an unspecified entity. No guarantee at all that those who review the proposals have expertise in the field.

What a great list! Honored to be included!

A question for my US historian friends: What relatively short books are you assigning in your modern US classes now? They can be primary sources like Baldwin's The Fire Next Time or fiction like O'Brien's The Things They Carried. Im just curious as I am looking to revise my course. Please share!

Agree re libraries, and will add that this is a devastating report in general. $10,000 a year average?? Also, I would argue anecdotally that classroom sales, traditionally a strong market for academic books, are way down in part b/c students are broke and downloading pirated books for free.
