There is much truth to consider here— bring back tastemakers!

I spoke about corporate consolidation and how sales teams across imprints are told which books to prioritize. And also book coverage in general interest outlets -- where once these publications were tastemakers, now they want to talk about a book only once everyone's already talking about it.

While I didn’t plan it that way, the books I have done publicity campaigns for this year all turned out to be published by small presses. If you’re a book critic writing about books as the year wraps up, and you’d like to receive any of the 2026 titles featured here, DM me.

I take umbrage with the writer’s use of the word “traditional” to describe publishers when it should be “corporate,” particularly vis-à-vis “small press,” but otherwise agree with many of the sentiments and much of the insight here, and this article is worth your time today.

I love that there is an American connection here, one of those sweet conversations that must happen a million times a day, “I just came across this. Do you like it?” A thrifter’s dream (and credit to the East Coast father-son duo for doing the research). And what timing!

If you work for a book publisher that has introduced AI at any point in the publishing process, I'm working on a story and would like you speak with you, on-record or off-. Same goes if you're an author and you've witnessed your publisher using AI at any point in the publishing process.
