The votes initially haven’t been there for a lot of things (ending slavery, women’s right to vote, interracial marriage, bodily autonomy, same sex marriage, etc.) but we did the fucking thing anyways because IT WAS THE RIGHT THING TO DO

Kamala Harris: I think that going in the direction of impeachment is not a good idea. I was in the Senate for the last go-round, and the votes aren’t there. I think after the election, we all have to just also agree that our attitude has to be to get stuff done…

Weird propaganda ad during the World Series calling liberals the *new* racists. If true, aren’t the republicans implying that they’re the OG racists? Like “Yep, we’ve been the racists for the past 400 years. NOW it’s the liberals!”

The @nytimes.com today refers to “Medicare for all and other left-wing positions.” Yet according to a 2026 Kaiser Family Foundation poll 66% of US adults favor a national "Medicare-for-All" style health plan. Are 2/3 of American adults leftist? Or is NYT again marginalizing widely held positions?

nytimes.comThe 11 Midterm Races That Could Shape the Progressive Movement’s Future (Gift Article)The left says its populist message can attract moderates and conservatives in addition to liberals. That theory will be put to the test in a series of competitive races on Election Day.

Rough news. I only met Ann Hornaday a few times, but she was extraordinarily kind to me. And she loved movies the way movies should be loved--with high standards, an open mind, and deep generosity. She will truly be missed.

Yes. The conservative scheme for education is a three-way split: high-priced academies for the children of the wealthy, religious instruction to brainwash the middle class, and a rump of prison-like public schools to discipline the lower class into obedience.

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

the other thing is that conservatives resolutely do not see the purpose of education as providing social mobility but as reifying and deepening existing inequalities of status. they are as hostile to low income students getting admission to elite institutions as they are black ones.

El-Sayed is going to forced to disavow the Muslim Brotherhood at least a dozen times more before the midterms. The point is clearly not the answer. The point is the question. It's basically push-polling.

I would like to see the end of the term "vaccine skeptic," to be replaced by "reality denier." These so-called skeptics are actually the most gullible rubes on the planet when it comes to conspiracy nonsense and tech-bro slop; the only thing that makes them skeptical is peer-reviewed evidence.

Hindsight is easy, but I do think a lot about what a cataclysmic mistake it was for the Democratic establishment to concede instantly, in 2016, that "basket of deplorables" was a gaffe. It could have been used to own a hard truth, with nobody backing down from it.

on October 14, a black bear entered the Mammoth Lakes Library at 6 am. it was the 100th anniversary of the publication of Winnie-the-Pooh. the bear went directly to the employees' food supplies. i know what you're thinking. the answer is yes. he ate a pot of honey. this was a pilgrimage.

facebook.com385K views · 119 reactions | On the very day the world marks 100 years since A.A. Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh was first published, a black bear made its way inside the Mammoth Lakes Library branch of the Mono County Free Libraries before opening hours — and, in a tribute no one asked for, went straight for the honey. Director of Libraries, Josef Bopp, shared that the bear entered the library at approximately 6:10 a.m, well before public opening at 10:00am. Upon entering, the bear went straight for the staff snack supply, where it helped itself to peanut butter, a selection of peach cups, a pawful of cookies and — of course — one jar of honey. Satiated, the bear then took a full tour of the library, perusing the new releases and inspecting the reference desk before, evidently content with its visit, letting itself out and departing for the day. Remarkably, no damage was reported. No shelves were toppled and no books were harmed, though the honey jar has not been returned at time of publication. “While we love an enthusiastic patron, and we understand the excitement of the centennial,” said Bopp, “we do remind patrons- and perhaps more importantly our bears- that snacks are not part of the circulating collection.” Winnie-the-Pooh was first published on October 14, 1926, introducing readers to a “Bear of Very Little Brain” with a very large appetite for honey. One hundred years later, the timing of the curious bears visit seems more than a coincidence. The library invites the community (human members only) to celebrate the centennial by visiting any of the seven #library of the #monocounty Free Libraries for a copy of Winnie-the-Pooh, or related bear titles! *On A Serious Note* Pooh may be cuddly, but #mammothlakes bears are wild. Residents and visitors are reminded to: • Keep a safe distance and never approach or feed a bear • Use bear-resistant trash containers and keep car doors and windows closed • Report bear encounters to Mammoth Lakes Police 760-932-7549, option 7. Or 911 in an emergency. As Pooh himself might say, it’s best to think, think, think before getting t | Mono County Free LibrariesOn the very day the world marks 100 years since A.A. as you read the insane campaign fundraising numbers dropping today please recall that currently Elon Musk is personally responsible for about 1 in every 20 dollars spent on behalf of Republicans nationwide in 2026; I wouldn’t be surprised if when the dust settles that number is as high as 1 in 10
