New Opinion in TiCS on what babies "know"! Some argue for innate concepts of objects, number, and morality. I offer an alternative perspective: attentional biases + perceptual prediction. No less impressive, but importantly different! www.cell.com/trends/cogni...

I grew up as a Developmental Psychologist in a era of almost unbridled Nativism. To see so many of its foundations crumble and being exposed for lack of rigour is fascinating to witness

New paper! Accepted at Perspectives on Psychological Science. A textbook finding in infant psychology is that newborns - within ~1 hour of birth - visually track a simplified 'three blob' facelike stimulus further than its inverted control (see picture). This suggested inborn knowledge of faces!

Fun new collab coming out in TICS (w/ Haley Weaver & Sudha Arunachalam) digging into the assumptions underlying the use of eye-gaze methods to study vocabulary development. Working on this paper really got us thinking - we hope it does the same for our readers! www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

This was one of the most enjoyable collabs I've had. Grateful for any and all feedback.

For a year and a half, @carorowland.bsky.social, @lehersingh.bsky.social, Marisa Casillas, Shanley Allen, and I have been meeting to discuss whether innateness is still a useful concept to think about in studying language acquisition. Here's our take: osf.io/preprints/ps...

Appreciate the invitation from APS to write about cultural belonging in academic departments.

“What is required instead is an intentional reorientation of departmental culture—one that moves beyond aspirational commitments to equity and toward practices that actively align ideals, policies, and norms,” says @lehersingh.bsky.social, professor and chair of #psychology at UMBC. #AcademicSky

I am somehow for the first time ever reviewing for PNAS and their reviewer instructions include this BANGER of a line: "The purpose of peer review is not to demonstrate proficiency in identifying flaws" Print it in eleventy point font and hang it from the hillside. Scream it from the rooftops.

When I went off to @bostoncollege.bsky.social, my mandate from my mom was pretty simple: do well academically, find a job, and be done in 3 years. My dad had just jumped the family ship and my sister would be going off to college in my 4th year. I had enough college credits to grad in 3. 1/
