There's only capacity within the industry for so many 50,000+ daily active user, live service, pvp games at once. We could say RN those games are: - League - Fortnite - PUBG - Dota - FIFA - NBA - CS2 - Deadlock - Valo - Call of Duty - Overwatch - Siege - Arc Raiders - Dead by Daylight - etc.

My question is, if you could pick any list of games to be that exclusive, top tier of PvP multiplayer right now (the kind where finding a match is instant and developer support is implicit) which would they be?

The @desertbus.org arrives early this year! And here's how the poster starts. Over the week I'll be drawing up stuff they do on stream and it can be purchased to help support the charity drive! Just 17 hours away: desertbus.org

they can't act on their own, they cannot go rogue. they are computer programs that do what they are programmed to do. they're as responsible for their actions as a grenade is for exploding after somebody pulls the pin

The lesson is obvious but the incentive structures are not in place to coerce companies into learning it.

Once again, I repeat that Japanese labor laws make it extremely difficult to fire permanent employees making layoffs nigh impossible within Japanese companies. Execs are not taking less pay out of kindness but necessity when times are rough.

referring to metroidvanias as "hollowslop" to simultaneously piss off people who like metroidvanias, people who like hollow knight, people who want a better genre name for "metroidvania", people who are sick of the word slop being misused, and gradius fans who want to see more checkpoint recoveries

I recently interviewed a traveller from an antique land. Their experience in arid environments with sizable, defunct monumental sculpture (sans torso) stuck with me. While they didn't get the position, here's three key takeaways they taught me about the fleeting nature of earthly power 👇

I sympathise with Rockstar here, but you know what would make a great apology? Committing to even one disc print run for GTA VI. I'll even let you partner with Limited Run if you wish. Anything short of giving people the opportunity to resell their used copy feels out of touch.

I have sympathies for pro wrestling fans. The allegations against certain people imply a cultural legacy of hideous sexual assault that makes it tricky to celebrate the careers of older wrestlers who don't even have specific allegations against them.

Considering all the statements from and against their peers, assuming innocence seems dreadfully naive but to leave them out of the conversation before a specific allegation is made and/or their guilt is proven would be disingenuous and unfair to them as a human. So instead I write nothing.

The upside is that the culture in recent years has taken a huge step in the positive direction, to the point where I feel comfortable telling you that I think the second greatest wrestler of all time is Kazuchika Okada. But he could also be #1!

I also feel this way about classic musicians like The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, David Bowie, etc. but the problems seem more pervasive in Wrestling. Perhaps because English language wrestling is more centralised, or maybe I just know more about it than music.

I want to write about the career of the person who I think is potentially the greatest wrestler of all time but part of what earns someone that distinction is their behaviour behind the stage and outside of the ring. Due to the culture we know existed, that's something I can't take for granted.

I realise that the road I made for this game has three lanes and no central dividing line so cars would run into each other head-on and crash and burn. I fixed it, but if this were a funnier game I'd keep it.

"You think we're in late stage capitalism? Babe, we're just getting started." I tend to agree with this sentiment but I think video games might be an exception. The industry is getting close to its hypothetical capitalist limitations and I don't know how much farther it can stretch.

Companies right now don't even pretend to worry about their public relations reputations. Firing people, cancelling projects, pursuing AI. There is no time to feign a moral backbone, to pretend to care about the community. If we don't put all our energy into maximising profits this train will crash.

Partially, we are still suffering the effects of the Pandemic which caused game sales to skyrocket, raising investors expectations based on conditions which did not sustain outside of a lockdown. But still. If this isn't the limit of capitalism for the industry I don't know what is.

In the lower budget sector, making a game is a complete gamble. It is sustained by the passion (or delusion) of hundreds of thousands of developers who are, right now, working for literally no money on games that will never make a profit.

The high budget sector has come to seek and expect the financial success of live service juggernauts like fortnite. Anything that doesn't reach those heights is shut down, but because the market can only sustain so many of them, that means everything is getting shut down.

I'm not trying to correct them but ever since the flagship pro iPhone crossed the 1,000USD threshold, I've figured customers would pay that for a console. At least, I would've, if the reason weren't because of an AI bubble artificially inflating the cost of memory.

I feel like I know so many funny, cool people but the concept of inviting more than three of them to something seems impossible now due to all the animosity that exists between them. Things are not looking good for a potential 30th birthday party in two years.
