There are many seals in the loch here, but this one has taken a shine to Bertie dog. He hangs around looking up at Bertie (who barks of course). Not sure if it's the noise or that fact that Bertie looks a bit like a seal wearing a fur coat. No 'Seal of approval' puns please!

This is a copy/paste: "Achnahaird Beach is renowned for sitting within a highly complex geological landscape that showcases three distinct, ancient rock formations". We were there on Monday (and were the only people present).

eBay users! Don't ignore today's email, even though it looks like a boring standard update to the User Privacy Notice. They want to use your data to train AI models. If you click the link over the words "the right to object", it takes you to a page with a toggle button letting you opt out.

“We're not f****** stupid enough to p*** off the entire woke south or centrist south really of the country,” “You need to seem palatable to everyone...We just need to get f****** elected, that’s all that really matters. We won't necessarily say what we are doing, part of the point is to not [say].”

Last night's rain making a bid for the sea. In April you can often walk across this stretch of the river with a decent chance of not getting wet.

Speaking of voting, if you're a member and you'd like to keep the National Trust's Council free from interference from Britain (and the US's) richest financiers, don't forget to vote before the end of the month. Quick-vote takes moments and avoids the Restore Trust slate of candidates.

I saw the light (or lack thereof) yesterday, and grabbed my camera and stepped outside, pretty sure I'd see the mother of all rainbows. But there was none. There was however, the darkest and brightest 'at the same time' moment I think I've ever seen. Extraordinary.

Bellingcat has become aware of an individual contacting people via Telegram and WhatsApp from a UK number, naming themselves "Antony Kevin", claiming to work for Bellingcat, and asking for assistance recruiting journalists and analysts working on Syria, in particular Damascus and Idlib.

Support the National Trust by voting for Council members by 11:59pm on 30 October 2026. Quickvote is convenient if you're short of time or worried about inadvertently voting for Restore Trust's Bonigala, Cristea, Goldman, Mealing or Omrani. In our often bad times, the Trust's doing good things.

Today marks three years since the iconic Sycamore Gap tree was illegally felled. We're pleased to bring you new images which reveal how the stump is growing, a sure sign that the tree is in recovery.

A couple of old ones from Assynt. (No, the guy in Ardvreck Castle wasn't a set up, he was just standing there like that!)

Flying towards Beinn Bhan yesterday. (Probably worth clicking through to see more detailed views). A nice quiet beach on that loch, if you fancy a very long trek!

Shieldaig Island. (The trees were planted in the mid-to-late 1800s to supply poles for drying fishing nets and ship masts - but were never harvested).
