IKEA's thing seems to be * Create inexpensive solution that Just Works and all the additional bits work perfectly together 😍 * Wait for British public to develop an attachment, then pull the plug * Create secondary market where people pay 3x or 4x the original price because nothing else Just Works

Spent too much time earlier trying to guess what "obereas" meant in an email from a business - a brand name? Some kind of Latin legal/bureaucratic term? Maybe a modern Spanish word I haven't come across? Until I searched online and discovered nope, they just misspelt "overseas".

Add this to the long list of things that were always entirely possible but you were called a naive idiot for thinking they were possible because it was More Complicated Than That.

Solar has overtaken nuclear. A decade ago it supplied 1% of the world's power. In 2025 it met three quarters of global demand growth. Almost nobody saw it coming. I spoke to Jocelyn Timperley at BBC Future about why. www.bbc.co.uk/future/artic...

Can this, from a My John Lewis marketing email, possibly be legal? * No unsubscribe link - you can only stop getting emails if you visit the website and cancel your membership of the loyalty scheme * After you've cancelled your membership you'll still get marketing emails from them anyway?!

A Very Merry Step On Lego to businesses that clearly cater to the "special occasions" market (florists, gift retailers etc) but respond to any setback by immediately cancelling the whole order and leaving the customer scrambling. Today I'm looking at you, Interflora, but there's a long list.

Got an idea for a TV programme. It's called Celebrity Show - basically the idea is you get a group of celebrities in to do a sort of long form elimination game show, like Traitors or I'm A Celebrity or whatever, but they don't know what the concept will be and it changes every series

Bad news for users of pavements: the Labour Government is making it easier to get an electric vehicle charging socket with no safe means of connecting it to a car. Expect even more trip hazard cables.

Anneliese Dodds MP@anneliesedoddsmp.bsky.social

This is great news for electric vehicle drivers who don’t have driveways (ie loads of people in Oxford). Glad to see the Labour government getting this fixed! buff.ly/0JgEBU0

Is this prick subtweeting me

It's so cute how you honestly believe that all those privacy opt-out toggles actually do anything, and that the companies involved genuinely honour your wishes.

how am I supposed to see the pity likes on my regular posts when they're buried in an avalanche of notifications about The One Post That Did Numbers For No Reason?!

So that film where they did an incredible job of casting an actresss who looks just like Elizabeth Holmes is in fact a documentary and it's literally Elizabeth Holmes 🤦‍♂️

TFW you contact a "local" business telling them what part of the city you live in and they immediately respond by asking for your postcode. Like c'mon, pretend better

This is my absolute pet hate. You've all heard my rants about Welsh "learners" but honourable mention must go to the "beginners' sewing course" I attended where they assumed we already knew how to cut out a pattern and use a sewing machine. Should literally be illegal

think I need to head on back to tumblr where I have amassed a grand total of 2 followers in over a decade and nobody ever "likes" anything really, I mean literally nobody ever likes anything

eBay users! Don't ignore today's email, even though it looks like a boring standard update to the User Privacy Notice. They want to use your data to train AI models. If you click the link over the words "the right to object", it takes you to a page with a toggle button letting you opt out.

"There's a very real risk that AI will become sentient, break containment and take over the world! 🤖👻but also we definitely need to tell it about when you bought a secondhand textbook, an extension cable and a sparkly belt!"

Sorry I am no longer responding to everybody's replies. I am working today and I can't keep up! I am not used to getting any response to posts on here and it's a bit disconcerting.

No joke. I think this is the most important video I have ever seen about mobile games. This guy breaks down how this game psychologically profiles you, and makes the game harder or easier in order to show you ads

And yes, I am aware that opting out may do nothing. It's not as if all the authors and artists who've had their work stolen by the AI industry ever opted in. But it makes your preferences clear.

In early Dec last year I tried on a pair of silver boots but decided against because too pricey etc Saw what looked like exact same boots in local chazza a few weeks ago, tried on: too small Saw a different pair of the exact same boots today, tried on: too big

Also tried on a sparkly skirt but lemme tell you, it does nothing for your self-esteem to have a kid watching and saying in ringing tones "don't force it, Kate, it'll never go over your bum" lucky those changing room curtains are soundproof

Today in My Local Charity Shop Doesn't Have Soundproof Areas: overhearing the manager in the break room regaling one of the volunteers with gruesome history facts and getting "oh no, I'm eating my lunch!" in response

A few months ago someone close to me asked if they could put some leave-in conditioner on my dry hair...and when it turned out they'd made a mistake and it was normal conditioner, they literally said "oh well, it's a leave-in conditioner now". And yes your guess about that person is correct

Any conditioner can be leave-in conditioner if you have ADHD

Spending my evening with some 17th-century wills, which means encountering the archaic word "sperate," as in the opposite of "desperate." (Sperate debts are debts you hope to collect, whereas you have lost hope in desperate debts.)

One day as a data entry clerk. The temp agency had sent me because I'd got the fastest score on the data entry tests, but I got fired at the end of my first day for not being fast enough.

Well, can we think of any reasons why our leaders would want to talk at incredible length about motions, slogans, signs, symbols, statements, flags, definitions, chants, artworks, songs, cartoons, words and placards, and never about what successive governments have been helping actual Israel to do.

"Spend £11.62 more for free postage!" fair enough, it's probably only worthwhile offering free postage if the parcel you're sending is over a certain value "One of the things you bought will be arriving tomorrow" just one - ? "because we are actually several third-party sellers in a trenchcoat"

Me: ok here's my fourth draft, I think I've nailed it Client: can we just do twenty more redrafts tho Me: sorry, the brief wasn't clear for this bit so I've just added a bit of placeholder text, can we discuss? Client: [instantly publishes the shitty placeholder text without a word to me]

one thing that i really want in terms of UX is being able to give organizations and apps 'budgets' in terms of how often they can demand my attention or message me, and I want these budgets to be visible to them. I want the marginal cost of bothering me to legible to those doing it.

After a few months the "perfectly identical" socks start diverging from each other. You can no longer just grab two and assume they're a pair. You still have to match them but they're similar enough that the job is a right old pain. Have you learned nothing from plastic takeaway containers & lids

I mean the post is about AI but...have you ever tried saying it's bad that HGVs make up 1% of city traffic but cause 10% of the deaths, or pointed out that we're all eating the externalised costs of road freight? because you will get someone explaining that HGVs are useful for transporting things

Bruno Dies@brunodias.dev

ultimately if your reaction to someone saying "I think this is bad, I am ethically unhappy about it, I don't want to touch it" is to go "well it's useful so. it's everywhere. nothing to be done" I just kind of think you're an asshole

I hate the thing of having to book a GP appointment TODAY OR NEVER because it makes it hard to plan around jobs & other responsibilities and also discourages people from getting non-urgent problems treated. anyway my local surgery has moved to a system where it's THIS MORNING OR NEVER 😭

You *can* get an afternoon appointment with my GP, but only if you ring up at 12:30pm and do a matinee version of The 8am Scramble, featuring a fresh hour on hold with the same well-loved music.
