The replies and quotes to this were full of polio vaccine and antibiotics but dudes. Smallpox. We eradicated smallpox so hard that people don't even think about it anymore. A disease that is estimated to have killed 300 million people in the 20th century alone is just GONE.

You know, canonically, Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy are two of the most dedicated parents in the Harry Potter books. Narcissa ends up betraying Voldemort in order to save her son. So it's nice to see that they also support his gender transition.

I follow this amateur group on WhatsApp that tracks orcas in the Puget Sound in case anyone who lives closer to the water than I do wants to try and see some from land and I always laugh because when it comes to the transient orcas feeding on another marine mammal they call it a "predation event".

I think the thought is if they state in blunt terms to the normies that the orcas are chowing down on some other marine mammal that normies find adorable, people won't like the orcas as much.

When I was still studying Arabic I used to love Nizar Qabbani's poems.

The 30th anniversary concert was last weekend so I must re-up.

Yesterday was the 30th anniversary of Rent opening on Broadway so here's your periodic reminder that Mark, Collins, and Angel sing "no day but today" to convince recovering heroin addict Roger to go on a date with a 19 year old stripper who is still very much in active addiction.

This is why it was a good line, because yes there are Americans who think of The Cheesecake Factory as a special occasion restaurant but Trump is not one of them. So thank you very much Donald for taking the bait.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Trump is BIG MAD about Obama saying the White House now looks like Saddam opened a Cheesecake Factory: "He's not a smart guy. He's not smart at all ... for you to say it's a Cheesecake Factory, that just shows why you were a lousy president"

I stick by my historical takes that The Cheesecake Factory menu is a monument to everything great and terrible about America, and that if you take a preteen to a fancy meal there, it is going to be the highlight of their month. Also if Keith Lee likes it, it can't be all bad.

Okay slightly more on this. It appears *league officials* called the police, not the other parents. League officials had asked the parents to leave and had offered a refund for the season. Parents were upset with this. Cops were called, determined it was a civil matter, and left.

League official probably shouldn't have called the cops. Parents need to chill about other kids rotating in and getting a chance to play soccer in a U5 rec league game. Hell they didn't even keep score at the games my three year old played in this fall.

Local news on Facebook obtained the bodycam video from the police who responded to the phone call. For what it's worth, the league official who called the cops is black. This just doesn't really seem as simple as white parents hating a black kid that the parents were making it out to be.

Alright this article has more info. The kid was taken out of the game repeatedly (note: this is EXTREMELY common for preschool soccer, in my kid's league they rotated kids constantly) and the parents were unhappy about it. Parents complained to the league official, league official called the cops.

"Why are there so many trunk-or-treats" because people are trying to make community. Your local church or school PTA or dance studio or whoever is hosting it is trying to foster a community. It's ultimately harmless. Your kid gets some extra candy and gets to have fun. You can sign up for the PTA.

I knit my three year old a pumpkin hat because he said he wanted a pumpkin hat. And I used cheap acryllic yarn to do it because yeah he wore that thing for about an hour and then promptly lost it.

Anyway. As a Former Gifted Kid™️ who has now had one kid who qualified for honors/AP programs, one who is thoroughly mainstream, and one who qualifies for special education services - I think gifted/honors programs allow you to more effectively educate the mainstream kids.

Your solid B student gets discouraged when it's the same five kids answering questions in class every time. That kid is much more likely to engage enthusiastically when those five kids are channeled off into an honors program.

This isn't really fair to gifted kids who aren't trained teachers and don't know how to teach. It's also not fair to the kids who are struggling and need actual, targeted instruction from an adult who knows how to help kids with learning difficulties.

"But what do we do with the gifted kids, they'll just sit in class and twiddle their thumbs?" I don't know, I guess it's impossible for them to help their classmates, or work on a project in class that uses their curiosity and also teaches their classmates something. <shrug> Guess we can't!

And I want to be clear here: this strategy also failed Philip. He didn't get the help he needed in that lesson because I did not understand what his actual needs were or how to help him. That was an hour of *his* time wasted as well, and he desperately needed that hour much more than I did.

Teaching is a skill. We require teachers to have college degrees and professional certifications. We acknowledge that reading intervention, math intervention, and special education require even more specialized certifications. This is not something we should be outsourcing to bored seven year olds.

When I was in second grade I was strong at math. I got partnered with a kid named Philip who struggled. I was supposed to "help" him with double digit addition. I would basically do the problems and say "see how that worked?" I then got in trouble for doing all the work. Again. I was seven!

I didn't understand that what I was doing wasn't actually teaching Philip anything. I didn't understand that I was not helping him. Because I was seven! I wasn't trained in teaching, I didn't know what learning disabilities were. It's absolutely not fair to expect that from elementary school kids.

Finding out that the absolute shit ton of crows in Portland is a plot point is so magical to me as a person who lives here.

Wildwood has a blink and you'll miss it shot of Powell's Books in Portland, Oregon with a drag queen story hour advertised on the sign.

I always find it interesting when BlueSky angrily says "X group of people isn't stupid!" If only because every group of people has stupid people in it. Stupid people do, in fact, exist. It is difficult for BlueSky, the retirement home for former gifted kids, to come to terms with this.

Some of you are probably even going to have children who are less than intellectually gifted, no matter how many books you read to them and how many experiences you expose them to. And you're going to have to figure out how to still value them and try to ensure that they end up as kind people.

I think it's fine that Barack Obama made fun of The Cheesecake Factory but also you are kidding yourself if you don't think there are Americans who consider The Cheesecake Factory to be fancy, special occasion dining. Multiple things can be true.
