Glad to finally be able to post about this long-in-the-works paper, led by the amazing @crobertson500.bsky.social and @small-schulz.bsky.social! "Everyone knows" that social media gives a distorted view of public opinion (...right?). 1/8

Is social media truly making us more politically polarized, or does it simply over-represent our most extreme opinions? In our new preprint, @small-schulz.bsky.social and I present *punishing evidence* that social media systematically overrepresents users’ most extreme political opinions. 1/n

We also tested whether treatment effects persist with a second, two-week follow-up, wave. Differences in discernment between treatment and control groups are no longer detectable because also the control group improved between waves, after we debriefed participants at the end of wave 1... 2 for 1.

Overall, effect sizes are small, much smaller than heterogeneity in rating accuracy at baseline between different demographic and political groups in Germany. Media literacy interventions are certainly no silver bullet but we find no evidence against using them in German adult populations.

lateral reading mainly reduced trust in untrustworthy sources, while online search mainly boosted trust in trustworthy ones. Search behaviour after visiting a stimulus website increased in both treatment groups.

Very happy to see this out! Our new paper, "Boosting Media Literacy Using Lateral Reading and Online Search Interventions," is now published in Psychological Science.

We tested two fact-checking strategies — lateral reading (checking the source) and online search (checking the claim) — in a large, nationally representative study in Germany (N = 2,666), combined with behavioural web-tracking data.

Both interventions modestly improved people's ability to distinguish trustworthy from untrustworthy content, and they seem to work through different mechanisms:

🚨 Now out in PNAS In decision research, "talk is cheap." We show it isn't. Using LLMs to analyze participants' free-text explanations of their choices, we find verbal reports are a rich, scalable window into how people actually decide. 🔗 www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/... Led by Kamil Fulawka
