This is a dreadful argument from Burnham. Empirically false - almost 6m people were granted settled status; about 4m are currently resident. More importantly panders to racism/xenophobia, and directly contradicts argument made in his speech about migrant contributions.

This paper brings back fond memories - this was my first field RA experience!

Important piece by @ruthjoneslabour.bsky.social in @labourlist.bsky.social, calling for the national screening committee to hurry up and review screening for harmful lead exposure. Ours is a "remarkably complacent and cavalier approach". We must take the issue more seriously, as in the US/France.

labourlist.org'Lead is still harming British children. Why aren’t we screening for it? - LabourListScreening for lead needs to become the norm. We cannot afford to continue to wait, for the children’s sake.

1/ A few reflections on this thought-provoking post from Vijayendra Rao — an economist I greatly admire (and a coauthor, many years ago). 2/ Part of this reads as a critique of economics as it was.

NEW FROM ME: The Great Delegalization. There are now (almost certainly far more than) 1M immigrants who were protected from deportation on Jan 20, 2025, and no longer are. It’s the result of a problem that’s been building for 30 years—& now only Congress can fix. www.newyorker.com/news/the-led...

South Sudan has some of the worst possible conditions for collecting quality administrative data. But South Sudan actually has quite good administrative data. How? @danhonig.bsky.social writes for In Development on how to make governments effective: indevelopmentmag.substack.com/p/what-the-s...

So I updated Twitter on this, so I should probably put it here as well: all responses will probably be slow. Earlier this month, we discovered my father has a five-inch tumor in his hip. We're waiting on the core biopsy, but the FNA biopsy confirms it is malignant and high-grade.

I'm interested in finding and potentially supporting people who are interested in doing long-form writing on the big efforts in global health: Gavi, Global Fund, PEPFAR, etc. If this is you or someone you know, please make yourself known!

In advance of migration stats at 9.30, expected to show further fall, a reminder of extent to which migration has boosted the UK labour market recently. The number of non-EU origin migrant employees has increased by more than 2 million (while UK-origin employees have fallen by about 700K). [1/3]

@lgilbert.co told me about this magazine a few days ago and my first thought was: when can I publish here? Check it out, for development researchers, policy makers, overthinkers, contrarians, the justice-minded, the word-obsessed, dreamers, and poets.

New in the American Economic Review: migration doesn't hollow out the home economy — it builds it up. More than 75% of the long-run income gains from migration are domestic. The home economy itself grows. Here's what we found: 🧵
